And theseוְאֵלֶּהarewhatאֲשֶׁרthe sonsבְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלinheritedנָחֲלוּin the landבְּאֶרֶץof Canaan,כְּנָעַןwhichאֲשֶׁרEleazarאֶלְעָזָרthe priest,הַכֹּהֵןJoshuaוִיהוֹשֻׁעַsonבִּןof Nun,נוּןand the headsוְרָאשֵׁיof the fathers’ housesאֲבוֹתof the tribesהַמַּטּוֹתof the sonsלִבְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלgave them as an inheritance:נִחֲלוּ אוֹתָם
by lotבְּגוֹרַלwastheir inheritance,נַחֲלָתָםjust asכַּאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad commandedצִוָּהthroughבְּיַדMoses,מֹשֶׁהfor the nineלְתִשְׁעַתtribesהַמַּטּוֹתand the halfוַחֲצִיtribe.הַמַּטֶּה
ForכִּיMosesמֹשֶׁהhad givenנָתַןthe inheritanceנַחֲלַתof the twoשְׁנֵיtribesהַמַּטּוֹתand the halfוַחֲצִיtribeהַמַּטֶּהbeyondמֵעֵבֶרthe Jordan,לַיַּרְדֵּןbut to the Levitesוְלַלְוִיִּםhe did notלֹאgiveנָתַןan inheritanceנַחֲלָהamong them.בְּתוֹכָם
Forכִּיthe sonsבְנֵיof Josephיוֹסֵףwereהָיוּtwoשְׁנֵיtribes,מַטּוֹתManassehמְנַשֶּׁהand Ephraim;וְאֶפְרָיִםand they did notוְלֹאgiveנָתְנוּa portionחֵלֶקto the Levitesלַלְוִיִּםin the land,בָּאָרֶץexceptכִּי אִםcitiesעָרִיםto live in,לָשֶׁבֶתand their pasturelandsוּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶםfor their livestockלְמִקְנֵיהֶםand for their possessions.וּלְקִנְיָנָם
Just asכַּאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad commandedצִוָּהMoses,מֹשֶׁהsoכֵּןthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלdid,עָשׂוּand they dividedוַיַּחְלְקוּthe land.הָאָרֶץ
Then the sonsוַ בְנֵיof JudahיְהוּדָהapproachedיִּגְּשׁוּJoshuaאֶל יְהוֹשֻׁעַin Gilgal,בַּגִּלְגָּלand Calebוַ כָּלֵבsonבֶּןof Jephunnehיְפֻנֶּהthe Kenizziteהַקְּנִזִּיsaidיֹּאמֶרto him,אֵלָיו“Youאַתָּהknowיָדַעְתָּthe wordהַדָּבָרthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהspokeדִּבֶּרtoאֶלMosesמֹשֶׁהthe manאִישׁof Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםabout meעַל אֹדוֹתַיand about youוְעַל אֹדוֹתֶיךָin Kadesh-barnea.בְּקָדֵשׁ בַּרְנֵעַ
I wasאָנֹכִיfortyאַרְבָּעִיםyearsשָׁנָהoldבֶּןwhenבִּMosesמֹשֶׁהthe servantעֶבֶדof YHWHיְהוָהsentשְׁלֹחַmeאֹתִיfrom Kadesh-barneaמִקָּדֵשׁ בַּרְנֵעַto spy outלְרַגֵּלthe land,הָאָרֶץand I brought backוָאָשֵׁבto himאֹתוֹwordדָּבָרasכַּאֲשֶׁרit wasinעִםmy heart.לְבָבִי
But my brothersוְאַחַיwhoאֲשֶׁרwent upעָלוּwith meעִמִּיmade meltהִמְסִיוthe heartלֵבof the people,הָעָםwhile Iוְאָנֹכִיfollowed fullyמִלֵּאתִי אַחֲרֵיYHWHיְהוָהmy Elohim.אֱלֹהָי
And Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהsworeיִּשָּׁבַעon thatבַּ הַהוּאday,יּוֹםsaying,לֵאמֹר‘Surelyאִם לֹאthe landהָאָרֶץon whichאֲשֶׁר בָּהּyour footרַגְלְךָhas troddenדָּרְכָהshall beתִהְיֶהyoursלְךָas an inheritanceלְנַחֲלָהand your sons’וּלְבָנֶיךָforever,עַד עוֹלָםbecauseכִּיyou followed fullyמִלֵּאתָ אַחֲרֵיYHWHיְהוָהmy Elohim.’אֱלֹהָי
And now,וְעַתָּהlook,הִנֵּהYHWHיְהוָהhas kept me alive,הֶחֱיָה אוֹתִיjust asכַּאֲשֶׁרhe spoke,דִּבֵּרtheseזֶהfortyאַרְבָּעִיםand fiveוְחָמֵשׁyearsשָׁנָהsinceמֵאָזYHWHיְהוָהspokeדִּבֶּרthisהַזֶּהwordהַדָּבָרtoאֶלMoses,מֹשֶׁהwhileאֲשֶׁרIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלwalkedהָלַךְin the wilderness.בַּמִּדְבָּרAnd now,וְעַתָּהlook,הִנֵּהIאָנֹכִיamtodayהַיּוֹםeightyוּשְׁמוֹנִיםfiveחָמֵשׁyearsשָׁנָהold.בֶּן
I am stillעוֹדֶנִּיstrongחָזָקtodayהַיּוֹםasכַּאֲשֶׁרon the dayבְּיוֹםMosesמֹשֶׁהsentשְׁלֹחַme;אוֹתִיasכְּmy strengthכֹחִיwasthen,אָזsoוּכְmy strengthכֹחִיisnow,עָתָּהfor warלַמִּלְחָמָהand for going outוְלָצֵאתand for coming in.וְלָבוֹא
And now,וְעַתָּהgiveתְּנָהmeלִּיthisהַזֶּהhill countryהָהָרof whichאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהspokeדִּבֶּרon thatבַּ הַהוּאday,יּוֹםforכִּיyouאַתָּהheardשָׁמַעְתָּon thatבַ הַהוּאdayיּוֹםthatכִּיAnakimעֲנָקִיםarethere,שָׁםand cities,וְעָרִיםgreatגְּדֹלוֹתandfortified.בְּצֻרוֹתPerhapsאוּלַיYHWHיְהוָהwill bewith me,אוֹתִיand I will dispossess them,וְהוֹרַשְׁתִּיםjust asכַּאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהspoke.”דִּבֶּר
And Joshuaוַ יְהוֹשֻׁעַblessed him,יְבָרְכֵהוּand he gaveוַיִּתֵּןHebronחֶבְרוֹןto Calebלְכָלֵבsonבֶּןof Jephunnehיְפֻנֶּהas an inheritance.לְנַחֲלָה
Thereforeעַל כֵּןHebronחֶבְרוֹןbecameהָיְתָהCaleb’sלְכָלֵבsonבֶּןof Jephunnehיְפֻנֶּהthe Kenizziteהַקְּנִזִּיas an inheritanceלְנַחֲלָהtoעַדthisהַזֶּהday,הַיּוֹםbecauseיַעַן אֲשֶׁרhe followed fullyמִלֵּא אַחֲרֵיYHWH,יְהוָהthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel.יִשְׂרָאֵל
Now the nameוְשֵׁםof Hebronחֶבְרוֹןwas formerlyלְפָנִיםKiriath-arba;קִרְיַת אַרְבַּעheהוּאwasthe greatestהַגָּדוֹלmanהָאָדָםamong the Anakim.בָּעֲנָקִיםAnd the landוְהָאָרֶץbecame calmשָׁקְטָהfrom war.מִמִּלְחָמָה
