And allוַ כָלthe peopleהָעָםgatheredיֵּאָסְפוּasכְּoneאֶחָדmanאִישׁintoאֶלthe squareהָרְחוֹבthatאֲשֶׁרisin front ofלִפְנֵיthe WaterהַמָּיִםGate,שַׁעַרand they toldוַיֹּאמְרוּEzraלְעֶזְרָאthe scribeהַסֹּפֵרto bringלְהָבִיאthe bookסֵפֶרof the lawתּוֹרַתof Moses,מֹשֶׁהwhichאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad commandedצִוָּהIsrael.יִשְׂרָאֵל
So Ezraוַ עֶזְרָאthe priestהַכֹּהֵןbroughtיָּבִיאthe lawהַתּוֹרָהbeforeלִפְנֵיthe assembly,הַקָּהָלfrom manמֵאִישׁtoוְעַדwoman,אִשָּׁהand allוְכֹלwho could understandמֵבִיןto listen,לִשְׁמֹעַon the first dayבְּיוֹם אֶחָדof the seventhהַשְּׁבִיעִיmonth.לַחֹדֶשׁ
And he readוַיִּקְרָאin itבוֹbeforeלִפְנֵיthe squareהָרְחוֹבthatאֲשֶׁרisin front ofלִפְנֵיthe WaterהַמַּיִםGate,שַׁעַרfromמִןthe lightהָאוֹרuntilעַדthe middleמַחֲצִיתof the day,הַיּוֹםin front ofנֶגֶדthe menהָאֲנָשִׁיםand the womenוְהַנָּשִׁיםand those who could understand;וְהַמְּבִינִיםand the earsוְאָזְנֵיof allכָלthe peopleהָעָםweretowardאֶלthe bookסֵפֶרof the law.הַתּוֹרָה
And Ezraוַ עֶזְרָאthe scribeהַסֹּפֵרstoodיַּעֲמֹדonעַלa towerמִגְדַּלof woodעֵץthatאֲשֶׁרthey had madeעָשׂוּfor this;לַדָּבָרand beside himאֶצְלוֹstoodוַיַּעֲמֹדMattithiah,מַתִּתְיָהShema,וְשֶׁמַעAnaiah,וַעֲנָיָהUriah,וְאוּרִיָּהHilkiah,וְחִלְקִיָּהand Maaseiah,וּמַעֲשֵׂיָהatעַלhis right;יְמִינוֹand at his leftוּמִשְּׂמֹאלוֹPedaiah,פְּדָיָהMishael,וּמִישָׁאֵלMalchijah,וּמַלְכִּיָּהHashum,וְחָשֻׁםHashbaddanah,וְחַשְׁבַּדָּנָהZechariah,זְכַרְיָהMeshullam.מְשֻׁלָּם
And Ezraוַ עֶזְרָאopenedיִּפְתַּחthe bookהַסֵּפֶרbefore the eyesלְעֵינֵיof allכָלthe people,הָעָםforכִּיhe wasהָיָהaboveמֵעַלallכָּלthe people;הָעָםand when he opened it,וּכְפִתְחוֹallכָלthe peopleהָעָםstood up.עָמְדוּ
And Ezraוַ עֶזְרָאblessedיְבָרֶךְYHWH,יְהוָהthe greatהַגָּדוֹלElohim;הָאֱלֹהִיםand allוַ כָלthe peopleהָעָםanswered,יַּעֲנוּ“Amen,אָמֵןamen,”אָמֵןlifting upבְּמֹעַלtheir hands;יְדֵיהֶםand they bowedוַיִּקְּדוּand prostrated themselvesוַיִּשְׁתַּחֲוֻּbefore YHWHלַיהוָהwith their facesאַפַּיִםto the ground.אָרְצָה
And Jeshua,וְיֵשׁוּעַBani,וּבָנִיSherebiah,וְשֵׁרֵבְיָהJamin,יָמִיןAkkub,עַקּוּבShabbethai,שַׁבְּתַיHodiah,הוֹדִיָּהMaaseiah,מַעֲשֵׂיָהKelita,קְלִיטָאAzariah,עֲזַרְיָהJozabad,יוֹזָבָדHanan,חָנָןPelaiah,פְּלָאיָהand the Levitesוְהַלְוִיִּםwere making the people understandמְבִינִים הָעָםthe law,לַתּוֹרָהand the peopleוְהָעָםwerein their place.עַל עָמְדָם
And they readוַיִּקְרְאוּin the book,בַסֵּפֶרin the lawבְּתוֹרַתof Elohim,הָאֱלֹהִיםclearly,מְפֹרָשׁand gaveוְשׂוֹםthe sense,שֶׂכֶלand they understoodוַיָּבִינוּthe reading.בַּמִּקְרָא
And Nehemiah,וַ נְחֶמְיָהwho wasהוּאthe governor,הַתִּרְשָׁתָאand Ezraוְעֶזְרָאthe priest,הַכֹּהֵןthe scribe,הַסֹּפֵרand the Levitesוְהַלְוִיִּםwho made the people understand,הַמְּבִינִים הָעָםsaidיֹּאמֶרto allלְכָלthe people,הָעָם“This dayהַיּוֹםisהוּאholyקָדֹשׁto YHWHלַיהוָהyour Elohim;אֱלֹהֵיכֶםdo notאַלmournתִּתְאַבְּלוּnorוְאַלweep.”תִּבְכּוּForכִּיallכָּלthe peopleהָעָםwere weepingבוֹכִיםwhen they heardכְּשָׁמְעָםthe wordsדִּבְרֵיof the law.הַתּוֹרָה
And he saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,לָהֶם“Go,לְכוּeatאִכְלוּrich fatty foodsמַשְׁמַנִּיםand drinkוּשְׁתוּsweet drinks,מַמְתַקִּיםand sendוְשִׁלְחוּportionsמָנוֹתto the oneלְfor whomלוֹnothingאֵיןis prepared,נָכוֹןforכִּיholyקָדוֹשׁisthe dayהַיּוֹםto our Lord;לַאֲדֹנֵינוּand do notוְאַלbe grieved,תֵּעָצֵבוּforכִּיthe joyחֶדְוַתof YHWHיְהוָהisהִיאyour stronghold.”מָעֻזְּכֶם
And the Levitesוְהַלְוִיִּםwere quietingמַחְשִׁיםallלְכָלthe people,הָעָםsaying,לֵאמֹר“Be still,הַסּוּforכִּיthe dayהַיּוֹםisholy;קָדֹשׁand do notוְאַלbe grieved.”תֵּעָצֵבוּ
And allוַ כָלthe peopleהָעָםwentיֵּלְכוּto eatלֶאֱכֹלand to drinkוְלִשְׁתּוֹתand to sendוּלְשַׁלַּחportionsמָנוֹתand to makeוְלַעֲשׂוֹתgreatגְדוֹלָהrejoicing,שִׂמְחָהbecauseכִּיthey had understoodהֵבִינוּthe wordsבַּדְּבָרִיםthatאֲשֶׁרthey had made knownהוֹדִיעוּto them.לָהֶם
And on the secondוּבַ הַשֵּׁנִיdayיּוֹםthe headsרָאשֵׁיof the fathers’ housesהָאָבוֹתof allלְכָלthe people,הָעָםthe priests,הַכֹּהֲנִיםand the LevitesוְהַלְוִיִּםgatheredנֶאֶסְפוּtoאֶלEzraעֶזְרָאthe scribe,הַסֹּפֵרto considerוּלְהַשְׂכִּילthe wordsאֶל דִּבְרֵיof the law.הַתּוֹרָה
And they foundוַיִּמְצְאוּwrittenכָּתוּבin the lawבַּתּוֹרָהthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad commandedצִוָּהby the handבְּיַדof Mosesמֹשֶׁהthatאֲשֶׁרthe sonsבְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלshould liveיֵשְׁבוּin boothsבַּסֻּכּוֹתduring the feastבֶּחָגin the seventhבַּ הַשְּׁבִיעִיmonth,חֹדֶשׁ
and thatוַאֲשֶׁרthey should make it heardיַשְׁמִיעוּand passוְיַעֲבִירוּa proclamationקוֹלthrough allבְּכָלtheir citiesעָרֵיהֶםand in Jerusalem,וּבִירוּשָׁלִַםsaying,לֵאמֹר“Go outצְאוּto the hillsהָהָרand bringוְהָבִיאוּbranchesעֲלֵיof olive,זַיִתand branchesוַעֲלֵיof oil tree,עֵץ שֶׁמֶןand branchesוַעֲלֵיof myrtle,הֲדַסand branchesוַעֲלֵיof palm,תְמָרִיםand branchesוַעֲלֵיof leafyעָבֹתtrees,עֵץto makeלַעֲשֹׂתbooths,סֻכֹּתasכַּit is written.”כָּתוּב
So the peopleוַ הָעָםwent outיֵּצְאוּand brought themוַיָּבִיאוּand madeוַיַּעֲשׂוּthemselvesלָהֶםbooths,סֻכּוֹתeachאִישׁonעַלhis roof,גַּגּוֹand in their courtyards,וּבְחַצְרֹתֵיהֶםand in the courtsוּבְחַצְרוֹתof the houseבֵּיתof Elohim,הָאֱלֹהִיםand in the squareוּבִרְחוֹבof the Water Gateשַׁעַר הַמַּיִםand in the squareוּבִרְחוֹבof the Ephraim Gate.שַׁעַר אֶפְרָיִם
And allוַ כָלthe assembly,הַקָּהָלthose who had returnedהַשָּׁבִיםfromמִןthe captivity,הַשְּׁבִיmadeיַּעֲשׂוּboothsסֻכּוֹתand livedוַיֵּשְׁבוּin the booths;בַסֻּכּוֹתforכִּיthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלhad notלֹאdoneעָשׂוּsoכֵּןfromמִthe daysימֵיof Jeshuaיֵשׁוּעַsonבִּןof Nunנוּןuntilעַדthatהַהוּאday.הַיּוֹםAnd there wasוַתְּהִיveryמְאֹדgreatגְּדוֹלָהrejoicing.שִׂמְחָה
And he readוַיִּקְרָאin the bookבְּסֵפֶרof the lawתּוֹרַתof Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםday after day,יוֹם בְּיוֹםfromמִןthe firstהָרִאשׁוֹןdayהַיּוֹםuntilעַדthe lastהָאַחֲרוֹןday.הַיּוֹםAnd they celebratedוַיַּעֲשׂוּthe feastחָגsevenשִׁבְעַתdays,יָמִיםand on the eighthוּבַ הַשְּׁמִינִיdayיּוֹםthere wasa solemn assembly,עֲצֶרֶתaccording to the rule.כַּמִּשְׁפָּט
