To love. It is the verb of ἀγάπη, “love” (G26); of the same family is ἀγαπητός, “beloved” (G27).

How we translate it

“Love” 76 times, “loved” 44, “loves” 20, “beloved” 3. This edition's glossary sets ἀγάπη / ἀγαπάω = “love / love” and φιλέω = “hold dear”, also in the Gospel of John. So in John 21:15-17 the reader can see the two verbs alternate: Jesus asks “do you love me?” twice and “do you hold me dear?” the third time, and Peter always answers “I hold you dear”; a note explains it.
