Word study

To bind, to tie; and, figuratively, to be closely joined, or to join in secret against someone: to conspire. From the same root is קֶשֶׁר, ‘conspiracy’.

Historical and cultural background

The book of Kings tells several conspiracies that end with the king’s death: Shallum against Zechariah, Menahem against Shallum, Pekah against Pekahiah (2 Kings 15:10-25).

How we translate it

With עַל it is ‘conspire against’ (“conspired” 20 times), and the figure ‘conspire a conspiracy’ is kept where the Hebrew repeats the root (“They made a conspiracy”). When something is tied, “bind” or “tie” (“You shall bind them”, Deuteronomy 6:8). The soul of Jonathan “was bound to the soul of David” (1 Samuel 18:1), and Jacob’s “is bound up” with Benjamin’s (Genesis 44:30). In Genesis 30:41-42, of the flock, “the stronger”.
