They set outוַיִּסְעוּfrom Elim,מֵאֵילִםand allוַ כָּלthe communityעֲדַתof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלcameיָּבֹאוּtoאֶלthe wildernessמִדְבַּרof Sin,סִיןwhichאֲשֶׁרis betweenבֵּיןElimאֵילִםandוּבֵיןSinai,סִינָיon the fifteenthבַּחֲמִשָּׁה עָשָׂרdayיוֹםof the secondהַשֵּׁנִיmonthלַחֹדֶשׁafter their departureלְצֵאתָםfrom the landמֵאֶרֶץof Egypt.מִצְרָיִם

The sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלsaidוַיֹּאמְרוּto them,אֲלֵהֶם“If onlyמִי יִתֵּןwe had diedמוּתֵנוּby the handבְיַדof YHWHיְהוָהin the landבְּאֶרֶץof Egypt,מִצְרַיִםwhen we satבְּשִׁבְתֵּנוּbyעַלthe potsסִירof meat,הַבָּשָׂרwhen we ateבְּאָכְלֵנוּbreadלֶחֶםto the full!לָשֹׂבַעButכִּיyou have broughtהוֹצֵאתֶםusאֹתָנוּout intoאֶלthisהַזֶּהwildernessהַמִּדְבָּרto killלְהָמִיתthisהַזֶּהwholeאֶת כָּלassemblyהַקָּהָלwith hunger.”בָּרָעָב
YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁה“Look,הִנְIנִיam going to rainמַמְטִירbreadלֶחֶםfromמִןheavenהַשָּׁמָיִםfor you;לָכֶםand the peopleוְ הָעָםshall go outיָצָאand gatherוְלָקְטוּa day’s portionדְּבַר יוֹםevery day,בְּיוֹמוֹso thatלְמַעַןI may test them,אֲנַסֶּנּוּwhetherהֲthey will walkיֵלֵךְin my instructionבְּתוֹרָתִיorאִםnot.לֹא
And on the sixth dayוְהָיָה בַּיּוֹם הַשִּׁשִּׁיthey shall prepareוְהֵכִינוּwhatאֵת אֲשֶׁרthey bring in,יָבִיאוּand it will beוְהָיָהtwice as muchמִשְׁנֶהasעַל אֲשֶׁרthey gatherיִלְקְטוּeach day.”יוֹם יוֹם
Mosesמֹשֶׁהand Aaronוְאַהֲרֹןsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto allאֶל כָּלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵל“In the eveningעֶרֶבyou will knowוִידַעְתֶּםthatכִּיYHWHיְהוָהbrought you outהוֹצִיא אֶתְכֶםof the landמֵאֶרֶץof Egypt,מִצְרָיִם
and in the morningוּבֹקֶרyou will seeוּרְאִיתֶםthe gloryאֶת כְּבוֹדof YHWH,יְהוָהbecause he has heardבְּשָׁמְעוֹyour grumblingsאֶת תְּלֻנֹּתֵיכֶםagainstעַלYHWH.יְהוָהAnd as for us,וְנַחְנוּwhat are weמָהthatכִּיyou grumbleתַלִּינוּagainst us?”עָלֵינוּ
Mosesמֹשֶׁהsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“This will happen when YHWH givesבְּתֵת יְהוָהyouלָכֶםin the eveningבָּעֶרֶבmeatבָּשָׂרto eatלֶאֱכֹלandוְbreadלֶחֶםin the morningבַּבֹּקֶרto the full,לִשְׂבֹּעַbecause YHWH has heardבִּשְׁמֹעַ יְהוָהyour grumblingsאֶת תְּלֻנֹּתֵיכֶםthatאֲשֶׁרyouאַתֶּםgrumbleמַלִּינִםagainst him.עָלָיוAs for us,וְנַחְנוּwhat are we?מָהYour grumblingsתְלֻנֹּתֵיכֶםare notלֹאagainst usעָלֵינוּbutכִּיagainst YHWH.”עַל יְהוָה
Mosesמֹשֶׁהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto Aaron,אֶל אַהֲרֹן“Sayאֱמֹרto allאֶל כָּלthe communityעֲדַתof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵל‘Come nearקִרְבוּbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH,יְהוָהforכִּיhe has heardשָׁמַעyour grumblings.’ ”אֵת תְּלֻנֹּתֵיכֶם
Asוַיְהִי כְּAaronאַהֲרֹןspokeדַבֵּרto allאֶל כָּלthe communityעֲדַתof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלthey turnedוַיִּפְנוּtowardאֶלthe wilderness,הַמִּדְבָּרand look,וְהִנֵּהthe gloryכְּבוֹדof YHWHיְהוָהappearedנִרְאָהin the cloud.בֶּעָנָן
YHWHיְהוָהspokeוַיְדַבֵּרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁהsaying,לֵּאמֹר
“I have heardשָׁמַעְתִּיthe grumblingsאֶת תְּלוּנֹּתof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israel.יִשְׂרָאֵלSpeakדַּבֵּרto them,אֲלֵהֶםsaying,לֵאמֹר‘At twilightבֵּין הָעַרְבַּיִםyou shall eatתֹּאכְלוּmeat,בָשָׂרand in the morningוּבַבֹּקֶרyou shall be filledתִּשְׂבְּעוּwith bread;לָחֶםand you shall knowוִידַעְתֶּםthatכִּיIאֲנִיam YHWHיְהוָהyour Elohim.’ ”אֱלֹהֵיכֶם
In the eveningוַיְהִי בָעֶרֶבquailהַשְּׂלָוcame upוַתַּעַלand coveredוַתְּכַסthe camp;אֶת הַמַּחֲנֶהand in the morningוּבַבֹּקֶרthere wasהָיְתָהa layerשִׁכְבַתof dewהַטַּלaroundסָבִיבthe camp.לַמַּחֲנֶה
When the layerוַ שִׁכְבַתof dewהַטָּלhad gone up,תַּעַלlook,וְהִנֵּהonעַלthe surfaceפְּנֵיof the wildernessהַמִּדְבָּרthere was something fine,דַּקflaky,מְחֻסְפָּסfineדַּקas frostכַּכְּפֹרonעַלthe ground.הָאָרֶץ
When the sonsוַ בְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלsaw it,יִּרְאוּthey saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto one another,אִישׁ אֶל אָחִיו“Whatמָןis it?”הוּאforכִּיthey did notלֹאknowיָדְעוּwhatמַהit was.הוּאMosesמֹשֶׁהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵהֶם“Itהוּאis the breadהַלֶּחֶםthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhas givenנָתַןyouלָכֶםto eat.לְאָכְלָה
Thisזֶהis the thingהַדָּבָרthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhas commanded:צִוָּה‘Gatherלִקְטוּof it,מִמֶּנּוּeach oneאִישׁaccording toלְפִיwhat he can eat,אָכְלוֹan omerעֹמֶרper head,לַגֻּלְגֹּלֶתaccording to the numberמִסְפַּרof your persons;נַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶםeach oneאִישׁfor thoseלַאֲשֶׁרin his tentבְּאָהֳלוֹyou shall take.’ ”תִּקָּחוּ
The sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלdidוַיַּעֲשׂוּso,כֵןand they gathered,וַיִּלְקְטוּsome muchהַמַּרְבֶּהand some little.וְהַמַּמְעִיט
But when they measured itוַיָּמֹדּוּwith the omer,בָעֹמֶרthe one who gathered muchהַמַּרְבֶּהhad nothing left over,וְלֹא הֶעְדִּיףand the one who gathered littleוְהַמַּמְעִיטhad no lack;לֹא הֶחְסִירeachאִישׁgatheredלָקָטוּaccording toלְפִיwhat he could eat.אָכְלוֹ
Mosesמֹשֶׁהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵהֶם“Let noאַלoneאִישׁleaveיוֹתֵרany of itמִמֶּנּוּuntilעַדmorning.”בֹּקֶר
But they did notוְלֹאlistenשָׁמְעוּto Moses;אֶל מֹשֶׁהsome menאֲנָשִׁיםleftוַיּוֹתִרוּsome of itמִמֶּנּוּuntilעַדmorning,בֹּקֶרand it bredוַיָּרֻםwormsתּוֹלָעִיםand stank;וַיִּבְאַשׁand Mosesמֹשֶׁהwas angryוַיִּקְצֹףwith them.עֲלֵהֶם
They gatheredוַיִּלְקְטוּitאֹתוֹmorningבַּבֹּקֶרby morning,בַּבֹּקֶרeachאִישׁaccording toכְּפִיwhat he could eat;אָכְלוֹand when the sunוְ הַשֶּׁמֶשׁgrew hot,חַםit melted.וְנָמָס
And on the sixth dayוַיְהִי בַּיּוֹם הַשִּׁשִּׁיthey gatheredלָקְטוּtwice as muchמִשְׁנֶהbread,לֶחֶםtwoשְׁנֵיomersהָעֹמֶרfor each one;לָאֶחָדand allוַ כָּלthe chiefsנְשִׂיאֵיof the communityהָעֵדָהcameיָּבֹאוּand toldוַיַּגִּידוּMoses.לְמֹשֶׁה
He saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵהֶם“Thisהוּאis whatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhas said:דִּבֶּר‘Tomorrowמָחָרis a solemn rest,שַׁבָּתוֹןa holyקֹדֶשׁSabbathשַׁבַּתto YHWH.לַיהוָהWhatאֵת אֲשֶׁרyou will bake,תֹּאפוּbake;אֵפוּand whatוְאֵת אֲשֶׁרyou will boil,תְּבַשְּׁלוּboil;בַּשֵּׁלוּand allוְאֵת כָּלthat is left overהָעֹדֵףput asideהַנִּיחוּfor yourselvesלָכֶםto be keptלְמִשְׁמֶרֶתuntilעַדmorning.’ ”הַבֹּקֶר
So they put it asideוַיַּנִּיחוּ אֹתוֹuntilעַדmorning,הַבֹּקֶרasכַּאֲשֶׁרMosesמֹשֶׁהhad commanded,צִוָּהand it did notוְלֹאstink,הִבְאִישׁandוְthere were noלֹא הָיְתָהwormsרִמָּהin it.בּוֹ
Mosesמֹשֶׁהsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“Eat itאִכְלֻהוּtoday,הַיּוֹםforכִּיtodayהַיּוֹםis a Sabbathשַׁבָּתto YHWH;לַיהוָהtodayהַיּוֹםyou will notלֹאfind itתִמְצָאֻהוּin the field.בַּשָּׂדֶה
Sixשֵׁשֶׁתdaysיָמִיםyou shall gather it,תִּלְקְטֻהוּbut on the seventh day,וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִיthe Sabbath,שַׁבָּתthere will beיִהְיֶהnoneלֹאon it.”בּוֹ
On the seventh dayוַיְהִי בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִיsome ofמִןthe peopleהָעָםwent outיָצְאוּto gather,לִלְקֹטbutוְthey found nothing.לֹא מָצָאוּ
YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁה“How longעַד אָנָהwill you refuseמֵאַנְתֶּםto keepלִשְׁמֹרmy commandmentsמִצְוֺתַיand my instructions?וְתוֹרֹתָי
See thatרְאוּ כִּיYHWHיְהוָהhas givenנָתַןyouלָכֶםthe Sabbath;הַשַּׁבָּתthat is whyעַל כֵּןheהוּאgivesנֹתֵןyouלָכֶםon the sixth dayבַּיּוֹם הַשִּׁשִּׁיbreadלֶחֶםfor two days.יוֹמָיִםStay,שְׁבוּeach one,אִישׁwhere he is;תַּחְתָּיוlet no oneאַל אִישׁgo outיֵצֵאof his placeמִמְּקֹמוֹon the seventh day.”בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי
So the peopleוַ הָעָםceased workingיִּשְׁבְּתוּon the seventh day.בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִעִי
The houseבֵיתof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלcalledוַיִּקְרְאוּits nameאֶת שְׁמוֹmanna.מָןItוְהוּאwas likeכְּcorianderגַּדseed,זֶרַעwhite,לָבָןand its tasteוְטַעְמוֹwas likeכְּwafersצַפִּיחִתwith honey.בִּדְבָשׁ
Mosesמֹשֶׁהsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“Thisזֶהis the thingהַדָּבָרthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhas commanded:צִוָּה‘A fullמְלֹאomerהָעֹמֶרof itמִמֶּנּוּis to be keptלְמִשְׁמֶרֶתthroughout your generations,לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶםso thatלְמַעַןthey may seeיִרְאוּthe breadאֶת הַלֶּחֶםthatאֲשֶׁרI fedהֶאֱכַלְתִּיyouאֶתְכֶםin the wildernessבַּמִּדְבָּרwhen I broughtבְּהוֹצִיאִיyouאֶתְכֶםout of the landמֵאֶרֶץof Egypt.’ ”מִצְרָיִם
Mosesמֹשֶׁהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto Aaron,אֶל אַהֲרֹן“Takeקַחaאַחַתjar,צִנְצֶנֶתand putוְתֶןin itשָׁמָּהa fullמְלֹאomerהָעֹמֶרof manna,מָןand setוְהַנַּחitאֹתוֹbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH,יְהוָהto be keptלְמִשְׁמֶרֶתthroughout your generations.”לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶם
AsכַּאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהcommandedצִוָּהMoses,אֶל מֹשֶׁהAaronאַהֲרֹןset itוַיַּנִּיחֵהוּbeforeלִפְנֵיthe testimony,הָעֵדֻתto be kept.לְמִשְׁמָרֶת
The sonsוּבְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלateאָכְלוּthe mannaאֶת הַמָּןfortyאַרְבָּעִיםyears,שָׁנָהuntilעַדthey cameבֹּאָםtoאֶלan inhabitedנוֹשָׁבֶתland;אֶרֶץthey ateאָכְלוּthe mannaאֶת הַמָּןuntilעַדthey cameבֹּאָםtoאֶלthe borderקְצֵהof the landאֶרֶץof Canaan.כְּנָעַן
