At the beginningבְּרֵאשִׁיתof the reignמַמְלְכוּתof Jehoiakimיְהוֹיָקִיםsonבֶּןof Josiah,יֹאשִׁיָּהוּkingמֶלֶךְof Judah,יְהוּדָהthis wordהַדָּבָר הַזֶּהcameהָיָהfromמֵאֵתYHWH,יְהוָהsaying,לֵאמֹר
“ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWH:יְהוָהStandעֲמֹדin the courtבַּחֲצַרof the houseבֵּיתof YHWH,יְהוָהand speakוְדִבַּרְתָּto allעַל כָּלthe citiesעָרֵיof Judahיְהוּדָהthat comeהַבָּאִיםto bow downלְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֺתin the houseבֵּיתof YHWHיְהוָהallאֵת כָּלthe wordsהַדְּבָרִיםthatאֲשֶׁרI command youצִוִּיתִיךָto speakלְדַבֵּרto them;אֲלֵיהֶםdo notאַלhold backתִּגְרַעa word.דָּבָר
Perhapsאוּלַיthey will listenיִשְׁמְעוּand turn back,וְיָשֻׁבוּeach oneאִישׁfrom his evil way,מִדַּרְכּוֹ הָרָעָהand I will relentוְנִחַמְתִּיconcerning the evilאֶל הָרָעָהthatאֲשֶׁרIאָנֹכִיam planningחֹשֵׁבto doלַעֲשׂוֹתto themלָהֶםbecause ofמִפְּנֵיthe evilרֹעַof their deeds.מַעַלְלֵיהֶם
And you shall sayוְאָמַרְתָּto them,אֲלֵיהֶם‘ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWH:יְהוָהIfאִםyou do notלֹאlistenתִשְׁמְעוּto me,אֵלַיto walkלָלֶכֶתin my instructionבְּתוֹרָתִיthatאֲשֶׁרI have setנָתַתִּיbefore you,לִפְנֵיכֶם
to listenלִשְׁמֹעַto the wordsעַל דִּבְרֵיof my servantsעֲבָדַיthe prophetsהַנְּבִאִיםwhomאֲשֶׁרIאָנֹכִיam sendingשֹׁלֵחַto you,אֲלֵיכֶםrising earlyוְהַשְׁכֵּםand sending,וְשָׁלֹחַbut you have notוְלֹאlistened,שְׁמַעְתֶּם
then I will makeוְנָתַתִּיthis houseאֶת הַבַּיִת הַזֶּהlike Shiloh,כְּשִׁלֹהand this cityוְאֶת הָעִיר הַזֹּאתI will makeאֶתֵּןa curseלִקְלָלָהfor allלְכֹלthe nationsגּוֹיֵיof the earth.’”הָאָרֶץ
And the priestsוַ הַכֹּהֲנִיםand the prophetsוְהַנְּבִאִיםand allוְכָלthe peopleהָעָםheardיִּשְׁמְעוּJeremiahאֶת יִרְמְיָהוּspeakingמְדַבֵּרthese wordsאֶת הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּהin the houseבְּבֵיתof YHWH.יְהוָה
And it happened,וַיְהִיwhenכְּJeremiahיִרְמְיָהוּfinishedכַלּוֹתspeakingלְדַבֵּרallאֵת כָּלthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad commanded himצִוָּהto speakלְדַבֵּרto allאֶל כָּלthe people,הָעָםthat the priestsהַכֹּהֲנִיםand the prophetsוְהַנְּבִאִיםand allוְכָלthe peopleהָעָםseizedוַיִּתְפְּשׂוּhim,אֹתוֹsaying,לֵאמֹר“You shall surelyמוֹתdie!תָּמוּת
Whyמַדּוּעַhave you prophesiedנִבֵּיתָin the nameבְשֵׁםof YHWH,יְהוָהsaying,לֵאמֹר‘Like Shilohכְּשִׁלוֹthis houseהַבַּיִת הַזֶּהwill be,יִהְיֶהand this cityוְהָעִיר הַזֹּאתwill be laid waste,תֶּחֱרַבwithoutמֵאֵיןinhabitant’?”יוֹשֵׁבAnd allוַ כָּלthe peopleהָעָםgatheredיִּקָּהֵלaround Jeremiahאֶל יִרְמְיָהוּin the houseבְּבֵיתof YHWH.יְהוָה
And the princesוַ שָׂרֵיof Judahיְהוּדָהheardיִּשְׁמְעוּthese things,אֵת הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּהand they came upוַיַּעֲלוּfrom the houseמִבֵּיתof the kingהַמֶּלֶךְto the houseבֵּיתof YHWH,יְהוָהand satוַיֵּשְׁבוּat the entranceבְּפֶתַחof the gateשַׁעַרof YHWH,יְהוָהthe New Gate.הֶחָדָשׁ
And the priestsוַ הַכֹּהֲנִיםand the prophetsוְהַנְּבִאִיםsaidיֹּאמְרוּto the princesאֶל הַשָּׂרִיםand to allוְאֶל כָּלthe people,הָעָםsaying,לֵאמֹר“A sentenceמִשְׁפַּטof deathמָוֶתfor this man,לָאִישׁ הַזֶּהbecauseכִּיhe has prophesiedנִבָּאagainst this city,אֶל הָעִיר הַזֹּאתasכַּאֲשֶׁרyou have heardשְׁמַעְתֶּםwith your own ears.”בְּאָזְנֵיכֶם
And Jeremiahוַ יִרְמְיָהוּsaidיֹּאמֶרto allאֶל כָּלthe princesהַשָּׂרִיםand to allוְאֶל כָּלthe people,הָעָםsaying,לֵאמֹר“YHWHיְהוָהsent meשְׁלָחַנִיto prophesyלְהִנָּבֵאagainst this houseאֶל הַבַּיִת הַזֶּהand against this cityוְאֶל הָעִיר הַזֹּאתallאֵת כָּלthe wordsהַדְּבָרִיםthatאֲשֶׁרyou have heard.שְׁמַעְתֶּם
And now,וְעַתָּהmake goodהֵיטִיבוּyour waysדַרְכֵיכֶםand your deeds,וּמַעַלְלֵיכֶםand listenוְשִׁמְעוּto the voiceבְּקוֹלof YHWHיְהוָהyour Elohim,אֱלֹהֵיכֶםand YHWHוְ יְהוָהwill relentיִנָּחֵםconcerning the evilאֶל הָרָעָהthatאֲשֶׁרhe has spokenדִּבֶּרagainst you.עֲלֵיכֶם
And as for me,וַאֲנִיlook, I amהִנְנִיin your hand;בְיֶדְכֶםdoעֲשׂוּwith meלִיas seems goodכַּטּוֹבand rightוְכַיָּשָׁרin your eyes.בְּעֵינֵיכֶם
Onlyאַךְknowתֵּדְעוּfor certainיָדֹעַthatכִּי אִםif youאַתֶּםputמְמִתִיםmeאֹתִיto death,מְמִתִיםforכִּיinnocentנָקִיbloodדָםyouאַתֶּםare bringingנֹתְנִיםupon yourselvesעֲלֵיכֶםand on this cityוְאֶל הָעִיר הַזֹּאתand on its inhabitants;וְאֶל יֹשְׁבֶיהָforכִּיin truthבֶאֱמֶתYHWHיְהוָהhas sent meשְׁלָחַנִיto youעֲלֵיכֶםto speakלְדַבֵּרin your earsבְּאָזְנֵיכֶםallאֵת כָּלthese words.”הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה
And the princesוַ הַשָּׂרִיםand allוְכָלthe peopleהָעָםsaidיֹּאמְרוּto the priestsאֶל הַכֹּהֲנִיםand to the prophets,וְאֶל הַנְּבִיאִים“There is noאֵיןsentenceמִשְׁפַּטof deathמָוֶתfor this man,לָאִישׁ הַזֶּהforכִּיin the nameבְּשֵׁםof YHWHיְהוָהour Elohimאֱלֹהֵינוּhe has spokenדִּבֶּרto us.”אֵלֵינוּ
And there aroseוַיָּקֻמוּmenאֲנָשִׁיםfrom the eldersמִזִּקְנֵיof the land,הָאָרֶץand they saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto allאֶל כָּלthe assemblyקְהַלof the people,הָעָםsaying,לֵאמֹר
“Micahמִיכָהthe Morashtiteהַמּוֹרַשְׁתִּיwasהָיָהprophesyingנִבָּאin the daysבִּימֵיof Hezekiahחִזְקִיָּהוּkingמֶלֶךְof Judah,יְהוּדָהand he saidוַיֹּאמֶרto allאֶל כָּלthe peopleעַםof Judah,יְהוּדָהsaying,לֵאמֹר‘ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWHיְהוָהTsevaot:צְבָאוֹתZionצִיּוֹןwill be plowedתֵחָרֵשׁas a field,שָׂדֶהand Jerusalemוִירוּשָׁלַיִםwill becomeתִּהְיֶהheaps of ruins,עִיִּיםand the mountainוְהַרof the houseהַבַּיִתhigh placesלְבָמוֹתof a forest.’יָעַר
DidהֶHezekiahחִזְקִיָּהוּkingמֶלֶךְof Judahיְהוּדָהand allוְכָלJudahיְהוּדָהactuallyהָמֵתput him to death?הֱמִתֻהוּDid he notהֲלֹאfearיָרֵאYHWHאֶת יְהוָהand entreatוַיְחַלthe faceאֶת פְּנֵיof YHWH,יְהוָהand YHWHיְהוָהrelentedוַיִּנָּחֶםconcerning the evilאֶל הָרָעָהthatאֲשֶׁרhe had spokenדִּבֶּרagainst them?עֲלֵיהֶםBut weוַאֲנַחְנוּare doingעֹשִׂיםgreatגְדוֹלָהevilרָעָהagainst our own souls.”עַל נַפְשׁוֹתֵינוּ
And there wasהָיָהalsoוְגַםa manאִישׁprophesyingמִתְנַבֵּאin the nameבְּשֵׁםof YHWH,יְהוָהUriahאוּרִיָּהוּsonבֶּןof Shemaiahשְׁמַעְיָהוּfrom Kiriath-jearim;מִקִּרְיַת הַיְּעָרִיםand he prophesiedוַיִּנָּבֵאagainst this cityעַל הָעִיר הַזֹּאתand against this landוְעַל הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאתaccording to allכְּכֹלthe wordsדִּבְרֵיof Jeremiah.יִרְמְיָהוּ
And Kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְJehoiakimיְהוֹיָקִיםheardיִּשְׁמַע—and allוְכָלhis mighty menגִּבּוֹרָיוand allוְכָלthe princes—הַשָּׂרִיםhis words,אֶת דְּבָרָיוand the kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְsoughtיְבַקֵּשׁto put him to death;הֲמִיתוֹand Uriahוַ אוּרִיָּהוּheard of it,יִּשְׁמַעand he was afraidוַיִּרָאand fledוַיִּבְרַחand wentוַיָּבֹאto Egypt.מִצְרָיִם
And Kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְJehoiakimיְהוֹיָקִיםsentיִּשְׁלַחmenאֲנָשִׁיםto Egypt,מִצְרָיִםElnathanאֵת אֶלְנָתָןsonבֶּןof Achbor,עַכְבּוֹרand menוַאֲנָשִׁיםwith him,אִתּוֹto Egypt.אֶל מִצְרָיִם
And they broughtוַיּוֹצִיאוּUriahאֶת אוּרִיָּהוּout of Egyptמִמִּצְרַיִםand brought himוַיְבִאֻהוּto Kingאֶל הַמֶּלֶךְJehoiakim,יְהוֹיָקִיםand he struck him downוַיַּכֵּהוּwith the swordבֶּחָרֶבand threwוַיַּשְׁלֵךְhis corpseאֶת נִבְלָתוֹinto the gravesאֶל קִבְרֵיof the childrenבְּנֵיof the people.הָעָם
Butאַךְthe handיַדof Ahikamאֲחִיקָםsonבֶּןof Shaphanשָׁפָןwasהָיְתָהwith Jeremiah,אֶת יִרְמְיָהוּso as notלְבִלְתִּיto giveתֵּתhimאֹתוֹinto the handבְיַדof the peopleהָעָםto put him to death.לַהֲמִיתוֹ
