Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַsentוַיִּשְׁלַחmenאֲנָשִׁיםfrom Jerichoמִירִיחוֹto Ai,הָעַיwhich isאֲשֶׁרnearעִםBeth-aven,בֵּית אָוֶןeastמִקֶּדֶםof Bethel,לְבֵית אֵלand saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵיהֶם“Go upעֲלוּand spy outוְרַגְּלוּthe land.”אֶת הָאָרֶץThe menהָאֲנָשִׁיםwent upוַיַּעֲלוּand spied outוַיְרַגְּלוּAi.אֶת הָעָי

And Joshuaוַ יְהוֹשֻׁעַsaid,יֹּאמֶר“Alas,אֲהָהּAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH!יְהוִהWhyלָמָהdid you bringהֵעֲבַרְתָּthisהַזֶּהpeopleאֶת הָעָםall the way acrossהַעֲבִירthe Jordanאֶת הַיַּרְדֵּןto giveלָתֵתusאֹתָנוּinto the handבְּיַדof the Amorite,הָאֱמֹרִיto make us perish?לְהַאֲבִידֵנוּIf onlyוְלוּwe had been contentהוֹאַלְנוּto stayוַנֵּשֶׁבbeyondבְּעֵבֶרthe Jordan!הַיַּרְדֵּן

The Canaaniteהַכְּנַעֲנִיand allוְכֹלthe inhabitantsיֹשְׁבֵיof the landהָאָרֶץwill hear of itוְיִשְׁמְעוּand surroundוְנָסַבּוּusעָלֵינוּand cut offוְהִכְרִיתוּour nameאֶת שְׁמֵנוּfromמִןthe earth.הָאָרֶץAnd whatוּמַהwill you doתַּעֲשֵׂהfor your greatלְ הַגָּדוֹלname?”שִׁמְךָ

Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלhas sinned;חָטָאthey have alsoוְגַםtransgressedעָבְרוּmy covenantאֶת בְּרִיתִיthatאֲשֶׁרI commandedצִוִּיתִיthem;אוֹתָםthey have alsoוְגַםtakenלָקְחוּfromמִןthe things devoted to destruction;הַחֵרֶםthey have alsoוְגַםstolen;גָּנְבוּthey have alsoוְגַםlied;כִּחֲשׁוּand they have alsoוְגַםput themשָׂמוּamong their own utensils.בִכְלֵיהֶם
So the sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלcannotוְלֹא יֻכְלוּstandלָקוּםbeforeלִפְנֵיtheir enemies;אֹיְבֵיהֶםthey turnיִפְנוּtheir backעֹרֶףbeforeלִפְנֵיtheir enemies,אֹיְבֵיהֶםforכִּיthey have becomeהָיוּa thing devoted to destruction.לְחֵרֶםI will notלֹאbeלִהְיוֹתwith youעִמָּכֶםany moreאוֹסִיףunlessאִם לֹאyou destroyתַשְׁמִידוּthe things devoted to destructionהַחֵרֶםfrom among you.מִקִּרְבְּכֶם
Get up,קֻםsanctifyקַדֵּשׁthe peopleאֶת הָעָםand say,וְאָמַרְתָּ‘Sanctify yourselvesהִתְקַדְּשׁוּfor tomorrow,לְמָחָרforכִּיthusכֹהsaysאָמַרYHWH,יְהוָהthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel:יִשְׂרָאֵל“A thing devoted to destruction isחֵרֶםin your midst,בְּקִרְבְּךָIsrael;יִשְׂרָאֵלyou cannotלֹא תוּכַלstandלָקוּםbeforeלִפְנֵיyour enemiesאֹיְבֶיךָuntilעַדyou removeהֲסִירְכֶםthe things devoted to destructionהַחֵרֶםfrom among you.”מִקִּרְבְּכֶם

Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַrose earlyוַיַּשְׁכֵּםin the morningבַּבֹּקֶרand hadוַיַּקְרֵבIsraelאֶת יִשְׂרָאֵלcome nearיַּקְרֵבby its tribes,לִשְׁבָטָיוand the tribeשֵׁבֶטof Judahיְהוּדָהwas taken.וַיִּלָּכֵד
He hadוַיַּקְרֵבthe familyאֶת מִשְׁפַּחַתof Judahיְהוּדָהcome near,יַּקְרֵבand he tookוַיִּלְכֹּדthe familyאֵת מִשְׁפַּחַתof the Zerahite;הַזַּרְחִיand he hadוַיַּקְרֵבthe familyאֶת מִשְׁפַּחַתof the Zerahiteהַזַּרְחִיcome nearיַּקְרֵבman by man,לַגְּבָרִיםand Zabdiזַבְדִּיwas taken.וַיִּלָּכֵד

Then Joshuaוַ יְהוֹשֻׁעַsaidיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלAchan,עָכָן“My son,בְּנִיpleaseנָאgiveשִׂיםgloryכָבוֹדto YHWH,לַיהוָהthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלand giveוְתֶןhimלוֹacknowledgment;תוֹדָהand pleaseוְ נָאtellהַגֶּדmeלִיwhatמֶהyou have done;עָשִׂיתָdo notאַלhide itתְּכַחֵדfrom me.”מִמֶּנִּי
AchanעָכָןansweredוַיַּעַןJoshuaאֶת יְהוֹשֻׁעַand said,וַיֹּאמַר“TrulyאָמְנָהIאָנֹכִיhave sinnedחָטָאתִיagainst YHWH,לַיהוָהthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלand thisוְכָזֹאתand thisוְכָזֹאתis what I did:עָשִׂיתִי
I sawוָאֵרֶאamong the spoilבַשָּׁלָלoneאַחַתfineטוֹבָהcloakאַדֶּרֶתfrom Shinar,שִׁנְעָרand two hundredוּמָאתַיִםshekelsשְׁקָלִיםof silver,כֶּסֶףand oneוּ אֶחָדtongueלְשׁוֹןof goldזָהָבwhose weight wasמִשְׁקָלוֹfiftyחֲמִשִּׁיםshekels;שְׁקָלִיםand I coveted themוָאֶחְמְדֵםand took them.וָאֶקָּחֵםAndוְlook,הִנָּtheyםare hiddenטְמוּנִיםin the groundבָּאָרֶץinsideבְּתוֹךְmy tent,הָאָהֳלִיwith the silverוְהַכֶּסֶףunder it.”תַּחְתֶּיהָ
So Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַsentוַיִּשְׁלַחmessengers,מַלְאָכִיםand they ranוַיָּרֻצוּto the tent,הָאֹהֱלָהand look,וְהִנֵּהit was hiddenטְמוּנָהin his tent,בְּאָהֳלוֹwith the silverוְהַכֶּסֶףunder it.תַּחְתֶּיהָ
They took themוַיִּקָּחוּםfrom the middleמִתּוֹךְof the tentהָאֹהֶלand brought themוַיְבִאוּםtoאֶלJoshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַand toוְאֶלallכָּלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלand they poured them outוַיַּצִּקֻםbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH.יְהוָה
Then JoshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַtookוַיִּקַּחAchanאֶת עָכָןsonבֶּןof Zerah,זֶרַחand the silver,וְאֶת הַכֶּסֶףthe cloak,וְאֶת הָאַדֶּרֶתthe tongueוְאֶת לְשׁוֹןof gold,הַזָּהָבhis sonsוְאֶת בָּנָיוand his daughters,וְאֶת בְּנֹתָיוhis ox,וְאֶת שׁוֹרוֹhis donkey,וְאֶת חֲמֹרוֹhis flock,וְאֶת צֹאנוֹhis tent,וְאֶת אָהֳלוֹand allוְאֶת כָּלthatאֲשֶׁרhe had,לוֹand allוְכָלIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלwas with him;עִמּוֹand they brought them upוַיַּעֲלוּ אֹתָםto the Valleyעֵמֶקof Achor.עָכוֹר
And Joshuaוַ יְהוֹשֻׁעַsaid,יֹּאמֶר“Whyמֶהhave you brought ruin on us?עֲכַרְתָּנוּYHWHיְהוָהwill bring ruin on youיַעְכֳּרְךָthisהַזֶּהday.”בַּיּוֹםAnd allכָלIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלstoned himוַיִּרְגְּמוּ אֹתוֹwith stones,אֶבֶןand they burned themוַיִּשְׂרְפוּ אֹתָםwith fireבָּאֵשׁand stoned themוַיִּסְקְלוּ אֹתָםwith stones.בָּאֲבָנִים
And they raisedוַיָּקִימוּover himעָלָיוa greatגָּדוֹלheapגַּלof stones,אֲבָנִיםwhich is there toעַדthisהַזֶּהday.הַיּוֹםThen YHWHוַ יְהוָהturnedיָּשָׁבfrom the burningמֵחֲרוֹןof his anger.אַפּוֹThereforeעַל כֵּןthe nameשֵׁםof thatהַהוּאplaceהַמָּקוֹםhas been calledקָרָאthe Valleyעֵמֶקof Achorעָכוֹרtoעַדthisהַזֶּהday.הַיּוֹם
