Now Korahוַ קֹרַחsonבֶּןof Izhar,יִצְהָרsonבֶּןof Kohath,קְהָתsonבֶּןof Levi,לֵוִיtook men,יִּקַּחwithוְDathanדָתָןand Abiram,וַאֲבִירָםsonsבְּנֵיof Eliab,אֱלִיאָבandוְOnאוֹןsonבֶּןof Peleth,פֶּלֶתsonsבְּנֵיof Reuben.רְאוּבֵן
And they rose upוַיָּקֻמוּbeforeלִפְנֵיMoses,מֹשֶׁהwithוַmenאֲנָשִׁיםfromמִthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלtwo hundredוּמָאתָיִםand fifty,חֲמִשִּׁיםchiefsנְשִׂיאֵיof the community,עֵדָהcalledקְרִאֵיto the meeting,מוֹעֵדmenאַנְשֵׁיof renown.שֵׁם
And they assembledוַיִּקָּהֲלוּagainstעַלMosesמֹשֶׁהandוְagainstעַלAaronאַהֲרֹןand saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto them,אֲלֵהֶם“Enoughרַבof you!לָכֶםForכִּיallכָלthe community,הָעֵדָהall of them,כֻּלָּםare holy,קְדֹשִׁיםandוּYHWHיְהוָהis among them.בְתוֹכָםWhy thenוּמַדּוּעַdo you exalt yourselvesתִּתְנַשְּׂאוּaboveעַלthe assemblyקְהַלof YHWH?”יְהוָה
When Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהheard it,יִּשְׁמַעhe fellוַיִּפֹּלonעַלhis face.פָּנָיו
And he spokeוַיְדַבֵּרtoאֶלKorahקֹרַחandוְtoאֶלallכָּלhis community,עֲדָתוֹsaying,לֵאמֹר“In the morningבֹּקֶרYHWHיְהוָהwill make knownוְיֹדַעwhoאֶת אֲשֶׁרis his,לוֹandוְwhoאֶתis holy,הַקָּדוֹשׁand he will bring him nearוְהִקְרִיבto himself;אֵלָיוandוְthe one whomאֵת אֲשֶׁרhe choosesיִבְחַר בּוֹhe will bring nearיַקְרִיבto himself.אֵלָיו
Doעֲשׂוּthis:זֹאתtakeקְחוּcensersמַחְתּוֹתfor yourselves,לָכֶםKorahקֹרַחandוְallכָלhis community,עֲדָתוֹ
and putוּתְנוּfireאֵשׁin themבָהֵןandוְlayשִׂימוּincenseקְטֹרֶתon themעֲלֵיהֶןbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWHיְהוָהtomorrow,מָחָרandוְthe manהָאִישׁwhomאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהchooses,יִבְחַרheהוּאshall be the holy one.הָיָה הַקָּדוֹשׁEnoughרַבof you,לָכֶםsonsבְּנֵיof Levi!”לֵוִי
And Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהsaidיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלKorah,קֹרַח“Hear,שִׁמְעוּplease,נָאsonsבְּנֵיof Levi!לֵוִי
Is it too littleהַמְעַטfor youמִכֶּםthatכִּיthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלhas separatedהִבְדִּילyouאֶתְכֶםfrom the communityמֵעֲדַתof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלto bringלְהַקְרִיבyouאֶתְכֶםnear to himself,אֵלָיוto doלַעֲבֹדthe serviceאֶת עֲבֹדַתof the dwellingמִשְׁכַּןof YHWHיְהוָהandוְto standלַעֲמֹדbeforeלִפְנֵיthe communityהָעֵדָהto minister to them,לְשָׁרְתָם
and that he has brought nearוַיַּקְרֵבyouאֹתְךָandוְallאֶת כָּלyour brothers,אַחֶיךָthe sonsבְנֵיof Levi,לֵוִיwith you?אִתָּךְAnd would you seekוּבִקַּשְׁתֶּםthe priesthoodכְּהֻנָּהalso?גַּם
Thereforeלָכֵןyouאַתָּהandוְallכָלyour communityעֲדָתְךָare the ones gathered togetherהַנֹּעָדִיםagainstעַלYHWH;יְהוָהandוְAaron,אַהֲרֹןwhatמַהis he,הוּאthatכִּיyou grumbleתַלִּינוּagainst him?”עָלָיו
And Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהsentיִּשְׁלַחto callלִקְרֹאDathanלְדָתָןandוְAbiram,לַאֲבִירָםsonsבְּנֵיof Eliab;אֱלִיאָבbut they said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“We will notלֹאcome up.נַעֲלֶה
Is it too littleהַמְעַטthatכִּיyou have broughtהֶעֱלִיתָusנוּup out of a landמֵאֶרֶץflowingזָבַתwith milkחָלָבand honeyוּדְבַשׁto kill usלַהֲמִיתֵנוּin the wilderness,בַּמִּדְבָּרthatכִּיyou should make yourself a princeתִשְׂתָּרֵרover us,עָלֵינוּevenגַּםmake yourself a prince?הִשְׂתָּרֵר
Moreover,אַףyou have notלֹאbrought usהֲבִיאֹתָנוּintoאֶלa landאֶרֶץflowingזָבַתwith milkחָלָבand honey,וּדְבַשׁor givenוַתִּתֶּןusלָנוּan inheritanceנַחֲלַתof fieldשָׂדֶהand vineyard.וָכָרֶםWill you gouge outהַ תְּנַקֵּרthe eyesעֵינֵיof thoseהָהֵםmen?הָאֲנָשִׁיםWe will notלֹאcome up!”נַעֲלֶה
And Mosesלְמֹשֶׁהbecame veryמְאֹדangryוַיִּחַרand saidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלYHWH,יְהוָה“Do notאַלturnתֵּפֶןtoאֶלtheir offering.מִנְחָתָםNotלֹאoneאֶחָדdonkeyחֲמוֹרhave I takenנָשָׂאתִיfrom them,מֵהֶםandוְI have notלֹאharmedהֲרֵעֹתִיoneאֶת אַחַדof them.”מֵהֶם
And Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהsaidיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלKorah,קֹרַח“Youאַתָּהandוְallכָלyour community,עֲדָתְךָbeהֱיוּbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH,יְהוָהyouאַתָּהand theyוָהֵםandוְAaron,אַהֲרֹןtomorrow.מָחָר
And take,וּקְחוּeach man,אִישׁhis censerמַחְתָּתוֹand putוּנְתַתֶּםincenseקְטֹרֶתon them,עֲלֵיהֶםand presentוְהִקְרַבְתֶּםbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH,יְהוָהeach manאִישׁhis censer,מַחְתָּתוֹtwo hundredוּמָאתַיִםand fiftyחֲמִשִּׁיםcensers;מַחְתֹּתandוְyouאַתָּהandוְAaron,אַהֲרֹןeachאִישׁhis censer.”מַחְתָּתוֹ
So they took,וַיִּקְחוּeach man,אִישׁhis censerמַחְתָּתוֹand putוַיִּתְּנוּfireאֵשׁon themעֲלֵיהֶםand laidוַיָּשִׂימוּincenseקְטֹרֶתon them,עֲלֵיהֶםand stoodוַיַּעַמְדוּat the entranceפֶּתַחof the tentאֹהֶלof meetingמוֹעֵדwithוּMosesמֹשֶׁהandוְAaron.אַהֲרֹן
And Korahקֹרַחassembledוַיַּקְהֵלallאֶת כָּלthe communityהָעֵדָהagainst themעֲלֵיהֶםatאֶלthe entranceפֶּתַחof the tentאֹהֶלof meeting.מוֹעֵדThen the gloryוַ כְבוֹדof YHWHיְהוָהappearedיֵּרָאtoאֶלallכָּלthe community.הָעֵדָה
YHWHיְהוָהspokeוַיְדַבֵּרtoאֶלMosesמֹשֶׁהandוְtoאֶלAaron,אַהֲרֹןsaying,לֵאמֹר
“Separate yourselvesהִבָּדְלוּfromמִthe midstתּוֹךְof thisהַזֹּאתcommunity,הָעֵדָהand I will consumeוַאַכַלֶּהthemאֹתָםin an instant.”כְּרָגַע
And they fellוַיִּפְּלוּonעַלtheir facesפְּנֵיהֶםand said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“El,אֵלElohimאֱלֹהֵיof the spiritsהָרוּחֹתof allלְכָלflesh,בָּשָׂרshall oneאֶחָדmanהָאִישׁsinיֶחֱטָאandוְwill you be angryתִּקְצֹףwithעַלallכָּלthe community?”הָעֵדָה
YHWHיְהוָהspokeוַיְדַבֵּרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁהsaying,לֵּאמֹר
“Speakדַּבֵּרtoאֶלthe community,הָעֵדָהsaying,לֵאמֹר‘Move awayהֵעָלוּfrom aroundמִסָּבִיבthe dwellingלְמִשְׁכַּןof Korah,קֹרַחDathan,דָּתָןand Abiram.’”וַאֲבִירָם
And Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהroseיָּקָםand wentוַיֵּלֶךְtoאֶלDathanדָּתָןand Abiram,וַאֲבִירָםand the eldersוַ זִקְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלfollowedיֵּלְכוּhim.אַחֲרָיו
And he spokeוַיְדַבֵּרtoאֶלthe community,הָעֵדָהsaying,לֵאמֹר“Turn away,סוּרוּplease,נָאfromמֵעַלthe tentsאָהֳלֵיof theseהָאֵלֶּהwickedהָרְשָׁעִיםmen,הָאֲנָשִׁיםandוְdo notאַלtouchתִּגְּעוּanythingבְּכָל אֲשֶׁרof theirs,לָהֶםlestפֶּןyou be swept awayתִּסָּפוּin allבְּכָלtheir sins.”חַטֹּאתָם
So they moved awayוַיֵּעָלוּfromמֵעַלthe dwellingמִשְׁכַּןof Korah,קֹרֶחDathan,דָּתָןand Abiram,וַאֲבִירָםfrom around;מִסָּבִיבand Dathanוְדָתָןand Abiramוַאֲבִירָםcame outיָצְאוּand stoodנִצָּבִיםat the entranceפֶּתַחof their tents,אָהֳלֵיהֶםwith their wives,וּנְשֵׁיהֶםtheir sons,וּבְנֵיהֶםand their little ones.וְטַפָּם
And Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהsaid,יֹּאמֶר“By thisבְּזֹאתyou shall knowתֵּדְעוּןthatכִּיYHWHיְהוָהhas sent meשְׁלָחַנִיto doלַעֲשׂוֹתallאֵת כָּלtheseהָאֵלֶּהworks,הַמַּעֲשִׂיםforכִּיit is notלֹאfrom my own heart.מִלִּבִּי
Ifאִםthese menאֵלֶּהdieיְמֻתוּןasכְּallכָּלhuman beingsהָאָדָםdie,מוֹתand the fateוּפְקֻדַּתof allכָּלhuman beingsהָאָדָםis visitedיִפָּקֵדon them,עֲלֵיהֶםYHWHיְהוָהhas notלֹאsent me.שְׁלָחָנִי
ButוְifאִםYHWHיְהוָהcreatesיִבְרָאsomething new,בְּרִיאָהand the groundוּ הָאֲדָמָהopensפָצְתָהits mouthאֶת פִּיהָand swallowsוּבָלְעָהthemאֹתָםandוְallאֶת כָּלthatאֲשֶׁרis theirs,לָהֶםand they go downוְיָרְדוּaliveחַיִּיםto Sheol,שְׁאֹלָהthen you shall knowוִידַעְתֶּםthatכִּיtheseהָאֵלֶּהmenהָאֲנָשִׁיםhave spurnedנִאֲצוּYHWH.”אֶת יְהוָה
And it happened,וַיְהִיas he finishedכְּכַלֹּתוֹspeakingלְדַבֵּרallאֵת כָּלtheseהָאֵלֶּהwords,הַדְּבָרִיםthat the groundוַ הָאֲדָמָהthatאֲשֶׁרwas under themתַּחְתֵּיהֶםsplit open.תִּבָּקַע
And the earthוַ הָאָרֶץopenedתִּפְתַּחits mouthאֶת פִּיהָand swallowedוַתִּבְלַעthemאֹתָםandוְtheir householdsאֶת בָּתֵּיהֶםandוְallאֵת כָּלthe peopleהָאָדָםwhoאֲשֶׁרbelonged to Korahלְקֹרַחandוְallאֵת כָּלthe goods.הָרֲכוּשׁ
So theyוַ הֵםandוְallכָלthatאֲשֶׁרwas theirsלָהֶםwent downיֵּרְדוּaliveחַיִּיםto Sheol,שְׁאֹלָהand the earthוַ הָאָרֶץclosedתְּכַסover them,עֲלֵיהֶםand they perishedוַיֹּאבְדוּfromמִthe midstתּוֹךְof the assembly.הַקָּהָל
And allוְכָלIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלwhoאֲשֶׁרwere around themסְבִיבֹתֵיהֶםfledנָסוּat their cry,לְקֹלָםforכִּיthey said,אָמְרוּ“Lestפֶּןthe earthהָאָרֶץswallow us!”תִּבְלָעֵנוּ
And fireוְאֵשׁcame outיָצְאָהfromמֵאֵתYHWHיְהוָהand consumedוַתֹּאכַלthe two hundredאֵת הַ וּמָאתַיִםand fiftyחֲמִשִּׁיםmenאִישׁwho were offeringמַקְרִיבֵיthe incense.הַקְּטֹרֶת
YHWHיְהוָהspokeוַיְדַבֵּרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁהsaying,לֵּאמֹר
“TellאֱמֹרEleazarאֶל אֶלְעָזָרsonבֶּןof Aaronאַהֲרֹןthe priestהַכֹּהֵןto take upוְיָרֵםthe censersאֶת הַמַּחְתֹּתfromמִamongבֵּיןthe burning,הַשְּׂרֵפָהandוְscatterזְרֵהthe fireאֶת הָאֵשׁfar away,הָלְאָהforכִּיthey have become holy,קָדֵשׁוּ
the censersאֵת מַחְתּוֹתof theseהָאֵלֶּהsinnersהַחַטָּאִיםat the cost of their lives.בְּנַפְשֹׁתָםAnd let them makeוְעָשׂוּthemאֹתָםinto hammeredרִקֻּעֵיplatesפַחִיםas a coveringצִפּוּיfor the altar,לַמִּזְבֵּחַforכִּיthey presented themהִקְרִיבֻםbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH,יְהוָהand they became holy;וַיִּקְדָּשׁוּand they shall beוְיִהְיוּa signלְאוֹתto the sonsלִבְנֵיof Israel.”יִשְׂרָאֵל
So Eleazarוַ אֶלְעָזָרthe priestהַכֹּהֵןtookיִּקַּחthe bronzeהַנְּחֹשֶׁתcensersאֵת מַחְתּוֹתthatאֲשֶׁרthose who were burnedהַשְּׂרֻפִיםhad presented,הִקְרִיבוּand they hammered themוַיְרַקְּעוּםinto a coveringצִפּוּיfor the altar,לַמִּזְבֵּחַ
a memorialזִכָּרוֹןfor the sonsלִבְנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלso thatלְמַעַן אֲשֶׁרnoלֹאstranger,אִישׁ זָרwhoאֲשֶׁרis notלֹאofמִthe offspringזֶּרַעof Aaron,אַהֲרֹןshould come nearיִקְרַבto burnלְהַקְטִירincenseקְטֹרֶתbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH,יְהוָהandוְnotלֹאbecomeיִהְיֶהlike Korahכְקֹרַחandוְlike his community,כַעֲדָתוֹasכַּאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהsaidדִּבֶּרto himלוֹthroughבְּיַדMoses.מֹשֶׁה
But on the next dayמִמָּחֳרָתallכָּלthe communityעֲדַתof the sonsבְּנֵיof IsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלgrumbledוַיִּלֹּנוּagainstעַלMosesמֹשֶׁהandוְagainstעַלAaron,אַהֲרֹןsaying,לֵאמֹר“Youאַתֶּםhave killedהֲמִתֶּםthe peopleאֶת עַםof YHWH.”יְהוָה
And it happened,וַיְהִיwhen the communityבְּ הָעֵדָהhad assembledהִקָּהֵלagainstעַלMosesמֹשֶׁהandוְagainstעַלAaron,אַהֲרֹןthat they turnedוַיִּפְנוּtowardאֶלthe tentאֹהֶלof meeting,מוֹעֵדandוְlook,הִנֵּהthe cloudוּ הֶעָנָןcovered it,כִסָּהand the gloryוַ כְּבוֹדof YHWHיְהוָהappeared.יֵּרָא
And Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהandוְAaronאַהֲרֹןcameיָּבֹאtoאֶלthe frontפְּנֵיof the tentאֹהֶלof meeting.מוֹעֵד
YHWHיְהוָהspokeוַיְדַבֵּרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁהsaying,לֵּאמֹר
“Get awayהֵרֹמּוּfromמִthe midstתּוֹךְof thisהַזֹּאתcommunity,הָעֵדָהand I will consumeוַאֲכַלֶּהthemאֹתָםin an instant.”כְּרָגַעAnd they fellוַיִּפְּלוּonעַלtheir faces.פְּנֵיהֶם
And Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהsaidיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלAaron,אַהֲרֹן“Takeקַחthe censerאֶת הַמַּחְתָּהand putוְתֶןfireאֵשׁin itעָלֶיהָfromמֵעַלthe altar,הַמִּזְבֵּחַand lay on itוְשִׂיםincense,קְטֹרֶתand carry itוְהוֹלֵךְquicklyמְהֵרָהtoאֶלthe communityהָעֵדָהand make expiationוְכַפֵּרfor them,עֲלֵיהֶםforכִּיwrathהַקֶּצֶףhas gone outיָצָאfromמִלִּthe presenceפְנֵיof YHWH;יְהוָהthe plagueהַנָּגֶףhas begun.”הֵחֵל
So Aaronוַ אַהֲרֹןtook itיִּקַּחasכַּאֲשֶׁרMosesמֹשֶׁהhad saidדִּבֶּרand ranוַיָּרָץintoאֶלthe midstתּוֹךof the assembly,הַקָּהָלandוְlook,הִנֵּהthe plagueהַנֶּגֶףhad begunהֵחֵלamong the people.בָּעָםAnd he put onוַיִּתֵּןthe incenseאֶת הַקְּטֹרֶתand made expiationוַיְכַפֵּרforעַלthe people.הָעָם
And he stoodוַיַּעֲמֹדbetweenבֵּיןthe deadהַמֵּתִיםandוּthe living,בֵין הַחַיִּיםand the plagueוַ הַמַּגֵּפָהwas stopped.תֵּעָצַר
And those who diedוַיִּהְיוּ הַמֵּתִיםin the plagueבַּמַּגֵּפָהwere fourteenאַרְבָּעָה עָשָׂרthousandאֶלֶףandוּsevenשְׁבַעhundred,מֵאוֹתbesidesמִלְּבַדthose who diedהַמֵּתִיםbecause ofעַל דְּבַרKorah.קֹרַח
Then Aaronוַ אַהֲרֹןreturnedיָּשָׁבtoאֶלMosesמֹשֶׁהatאֶלthe entranceפֶּתַחof the tentאֹהֶלof meeting,מוֹעֵדandוְthe plagueהַמַּגֵּפָהwas stopped.נֶעֱצָרָה
