Joshua 22

ThenאָזJoshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַsummonedיִקְרָאthe Reubenites,לָראוּבֵנִיthe Gadites,וְלַגָּדִיand the halfוְלַחֲצִיtribeמַטֵּהof Manasseh,מְנַשֶּׁה

and he saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵיהֶם“Youאַתֶּםhave keptשְׁמַרְתֶּםallכָּלthatאֲשֶׁרMosesמֹשֶׁהthe servantעֶבֶדof YHWHיְהוָהcommandedצִוָּהyou,אֶתְכֶםand have listenedוַתִּשְׁמְעוּto my voiceבְקוֹלִיin allלְכֹלthatאֲשֶׁרI have commandedצִוִּיתִיyou.אֶתְכֶם

You have notלֹאabandonedעֲזַבְתֶּםyour brothersאֲחֵיכֶםtheseזֶהmanyרַבִּיםdaysיָמִיםup toעַדthisהַזֶּהday,הַיּוֹםand you have keptוּשְׁמַרְתֶּםthe chargeמִשְׁמֶרֶתof the commandmentמִצְוַתof YHWHיְהוָהyour Elohim.אֱלֹהֵיכֶם

And nowוְעַתָּהYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֵיכֶםhas given restהֵנִיחַto your brothers,לַאֲחֵיכֶםjust asכַּאֲשֶׁרhe spokeדִּבֶּרto them.לָהֶםSo nowוְעַתָּהturnפְּנוּand goוּלְכוּto your tents,לְאָהֳלֵיכֶםtoאֶלthe landאֶרֶץof your possession,אֲחֻזַּתְכֶםwhichאֲשֶׁרMosesמֹשֶׁהthe servantעֶבֶדof YHWHיְהוָהgaveנָתַןyouלָכֶםbeyondבְּעֵבֶרthe Jordan.הַיַּרְדֵּן

Onlyרַקbe veryמְאֹדcarefulשִׁמְרוּto doלַעֲשׂוֹתthe commandmentהַמִּצְוָהand the instructionוְ הַתּוֹרָהthatאֲשֶׁרMosesמֹשֶׁהthe servantעֶבֶדof YHWHיְהוָהcommandedצִוָּהyou:אֶתְכֶםto loveלְאַהֲבָהYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohim,אֱלֹהֵיכֶםand to walkוְלָלֶכֶתin allבְּכָלhis ways,דְּרָכָיוand to keepוְלִשְׁמֹרhis commandments,מִצְוֺתָיוand to clingוּלְדָבְקָהto him,בוֹand to serve himוּלְעָבְדוֹwith allבְּכָלyour heartלְבַבְכֶםand with allוּבְכָלyour soul.”נַפְשְׁכֶם

And Joshuaוַ יְהוֹשֻׁעַblessed themיְבָרְכֵםand sent them away,וַיְשַׁלְּחֵםand they wentוַיֵּלְכוּtoאֶלtheir tents.אָהֳלֵיהֶם

Now to the halfוְלַחֲצִיtribeשֵׁבֶטof ManassehהַמְנַשֶּׁהMosesמֹשֶׁהhad givenנָתַןlandin Bashan,בַּבָּשָׁןand to its other halfוּלְחֶצְיוֹJoshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַgaveנָתַןlandwithעִםtheir brothersאֲחֵיהֶםbeyondבְּעֵבֶרthe Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּןwestward.יָמָּהAnd also,וְגַםwhenכִּיJoshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַsent them awayשִׁלְּחָםtoאֶלtheir tents,אָהֳלֵיהֶםhe blessed themוַיְבָרֲכֵם

and saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵיהֶםsaying,לֵאמֹר“With greatבִּ רַבִּיםrichesנְכָסִיםreturnשׁוּבוּtoאֶלyour tents,אָהֳלֵיכֶםand with veryוּבְ מְאֹדmuchרַבlivestock,מִקְנֶהwith silver,בְּכֶסֶףwith gold,וּבְזָהָבwith bronze,וּבִנְחֹשֶׁתwith iron,וּבְבַרְזֶלand with veryוּבִ מְאֹדmanyהַרְבֵּהgarments.שְׂלָמוֹתDivideחִלְקוּthe spoilשְׁלַלof your enemiesאֹיְבֵיכֶםwithעִםyour brothers.”אֲחֵיכֶם

So the sonsוַ בְּנֵיof Reuben,רְאוּבֵןthe sonsוּבְנֵיof Gad,גָדand the halfוַחֲצִיtribeשֵׁבֶטof Manassehהַמְנַשֶּׁהreturnedיָּשֻׁבוּand wentוַיֵּלְכוּaway fromמֵאֵתthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלat Shiloh,מִשִּׁלֹהwhichאֲשֶׁרisin the landבְּאֶרֶץof Canaan,כְּנָעַןto goלָלֶכֶתtoאֶלthe landאֶרֶץof Gilead,הַגִּלְעָדtoאֶלthe landאֶרֶץof their possession,אֲחֻזָּתָםwhichאֲשֶׁרthey had taken possession ofנֹאחֲזוּ בָהּaccording to the commandעַל פִּיof YHWHיְהוָהthroughבְּיַדMoses.מֹשֶׁה

And they cameוַיָּבֹאוּtoאֶלthe regionsגְּלִילוֹתof the Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּןthatאֲשֶׁרarein the landבְּאֶרֶץof Canaan,כְּנָעַןand the sonsוַ בְנֵיof Reuben,רְאוּבֵןthe sonsוּבְנֵיof Gad,גָדand the halfוַחֲצִיtribeשֵׁבֶטof Manassehהַמְנַשֶּׁהbuiltיִּבְנוּthereשָׁםan altarמִזְבֵּחַbyעַלthe Jordan,הַיַּרְדֵּןa greatגָּדוֹלaltarמִזְבֵּחַto be seen.לְמַרְאֶה

And the sonsוַ בְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלheardיִּשְׁמְעוּit said,לֵאמֹר“Look,הִנֵּהthe sonsבְנֵיof Reuben,רְאוּבֵןthe sonsוּבְנֵיof Gad,גָדand the halfוַחֲצִיtribeשֵׁבֶטof Manassehהַמְנַשֶּׁהhave builtבָנוּthe altarהַמִּזְבֵּחַin front ofאֶל מוּלthe landאֶרֶץof Canaan,כְּנַעַןinאֶלthe regionsגְּלִילוֹתof the Jordan,הַיַּרְדֵּןonאֶלthe sideעֵבֶרof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israel.”יִשְׂרָאֵל

And the sonsוַ בְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלheard it,יִּשְׁמְעוּand the wholeוַ כָּלcommunityעֲדַתof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלassembledיִּקָּהֲלוּat Shilohשִׁלֹהto go upלַעֲלוֹתagainst themעֲלֵיהֶםwith the army.לַצָּבָא

And the sonsוַ בְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלsentיִּשְׁלְחוּtoאֶלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Reuben,רְאוּבֵןtoוְאֶלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Gad,גָדand toוְאֶלthe halfחֲצִיtribeשֵׁבֶטof Manasseh,מְנַשֶּׁהinאֶלthe landאֶרֶץof Gilead,הַגִּלְעָדPhinehasפִּינְחָסsonבֶּןof Eleazarאֶלְעָזָרthe priest,הַכֹּהֵן

and tenוַעֲשָׂרָהchiefsנְשִׂאִיםwith him,עִמּוֹoneאֶחָדchiefנָשִׂיאeach,נָשִׂיא אֶחָדfor each father’s houseלְבֵית אָבof allלְכֹלthe tribesמַטּוֹתof Israel;יִשְׂרָאֵלand eachוְאִישׁof themהֵמָּהwasheadרֹאשׁof their fathers’ houseבֵּית אֲבוֹתָםamong the thousandsלְאַלְפֵיof Israel.יִשְׂרָאֵל

And they cameוַיָּבֹאוּtoאֶלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Reuben,רְאוּבֵןtoוְאֶלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Gad,גָדand toוְאֶלthe halfחֲצִיtribeשֵׁבֶטof Manasseh,מְנַשֶּׁהinאֶלthe landאֶרֶץof Gilead,הַגִּלְעָדand they spokeוַיְדַבְּרוּwith them,אִתָּםsaying,לֵאמֹר

“Thusכֹּהsaysאָמְרוּthe wholeכֹּלcommunityעֲדַתof YHWH:יְהוָה‘Whatמָהisthisהַזֶּהunfaithfulnessהַמַּעַלthatאֲשֶׁרyou have committedמְעַלְתֶּםagainst the Elohimבֵּאלֹהֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלturning backלָשׁוּבtodayהַיּוֹםfrom followingמֵאַחֲרֵיYHWHיְהוָהby buildingבִּבְנוֹתְyourselvesלָכֶםan altar,מִזְבֵּחַto rebelלִמְרָדְכֶםtodayהַיּוֹםagainst YHWH?בַּיהוָה

Is the iniquityהַ אֶת עֲוֺןof Peorפְּעוֹרtoo littleמְעַטfor us,לָנוּfrom whichאֲשֶׁר מִמֶּנּוּwe have notלֹאcleansed ourselvesהִטַּהַרְנוּtoעַדthisהַזֶּהday,הַיּוֹםandוַfor whichthe plagueהַנֶּגֶףcameיְהִיon the communityבַּעֲדַתof YHWH?יְהוָה

And youוְאַתֶּםturn backתָּשֻׁבוּtodayהַיּוֹםfrom followingמֵאַחֲרֵיYHWH!יְהוָהAnd it shall be,וְהָיָהifyouאַתֶּםrebelתִּמְרְדוּtodayהַיּוֹםagainst YHWH,בַּיהוָהthat tomorrowוּמָחָרhe will be angryיִקְצֹףwithאֶלthe wholeכָּלcommunityעֲדַתof Israel.יִשְׂרָאֵל

Butוְאַךְifאִםthe landאֶרֶץof your possessionאֲחֻזַּתְכֶםis unclean,טְמֵאָהcross overעִבְרוּtoאֶלthe landאֶרֶץof the possessionאֲחֻזַּתof YHWH,יְהוָהwhereאֲשֶׁר שָׁםthe dwellingמִשְׁכַּןof YHWHיְהוָהdwells,שָׁכַןand take possessionוְהֵאָחֲזוּamong us;בְּתוֹכֵנוּbut do notוּ אַלrebelתִּמְרֹדוּagainst YHWH,בַיהוָהand do notוְ אֶלrebelתִּמְרֹדוּagainst usאֹתָנוּby buildingבִּבְנֹתְyourselvesלָכֶםan altarמִזְבֵּחַbesidesמִבַּלְעֲדֵיthe altarמִזְבַּחof YHWHיְהוָהour Elohim.אֱלֹהֵינוּ

Did notהֲלוֹאAchanעָכָןsonבֶּןof Zerahזֶרַחcommitמָעַלunfaithfulnessמַעַלwith the things devoted to destruction,בַּחֵרֶםand angerקָצֶףcameהָיָהuponוְעַלthe wholeכָּלcommunityעֲדַתof Israel?יִשְׂרָאֵלAnd he,וְהוּאoneאֶחָדman,אִישׁdid notלֹאexpireגָוַעalonein his iniquity.’”בַּעֲוֺנוֹ

Then the sonsוַ בְּנֵיof Reuben,רְאוּבֵןthe sonsוּבְנֵיof Gad,גָדand the halfוַחֲצִיtribeשֵׁבֶטof Manassehהַמְנַשֶּׁהansweredיַּעֲנוּand spokeוַיְדַבְּרוּto the headsאֶת רָאשֵׁיof the thousandsאַלְפֵיof Israel:יִשְׂרָאֵל

“El,אֵלElohim,אֱלֹהִיםYHWH!יְהוָהEl,אֵלElohim,אֱלֹהִיםYHWH!יְהוָהHeהוּאknows,יֹדֵעַand Israel—וְיִשְׂרָאֵלlet himהוּאknow!יֵדָעIfאִםit wasin rebellionבְּמֶרֶדorוְifאִםin unfaithfulnessבְּמַעַלagainst YHWH,בַּיהוָהdo notאַלsave usתּוֹשִׁיעֵנוּthisהַזֶּהday.הַיּוֹם

If it was to buildלִבְנוֹתourselvesלָנוּan altarמִזְבֵּחַto turn backלָשׁוּבfrom followingמֵאַחֲרֵיYHWH,יְהוָהorוְifאִםto offerלְהַעֲלוֹתon itעָלָיוburnt offeringעוֹלָהand grain offering,וּמִנְחָהorוְifאִםto makeלַעֲשׂוֹתon itעָלָיוsacrificesזִבְחֵיof peace offerings,שְׁלָמִיםmay YHWHיְהוָהhimselfהוּאcall us to account.יְבַקֵּשׁ

But no:וְאִם לֹאout of anxiety,מִדְּאָגָהfor a reason,מִדָּבָרwe didעָשִׂינוּthis,זֹאתsaying,לֵאמֹר‘Tomorrowמָחָרyour sonsבְנֵיכֶםwill sayיֹאמְרוּto our sons,לְבָנֵינוּsaying,לֵאמֹר“Whatמַהhave youלָּכֶםto dowith YHWH,וְלַיהוָהthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel?יִשְׂרָאֵל

YHWHיְהוָהhas madeנָתַןthe Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּןa borderוּגְבוּלbetween usבֵּינֵנוּand you,וּבֵינֵיכֶםsonsבְּנֵיof Reubenרְאוּבֵןand sonsוּבְנֵיof Gad;גָדyou have noאֵין לָכֶםportionחֵלֶקin YHWH.”בַּיהוָהAnd so your sonsוְ בְנֵיכֶםwould stopהִשְׁבִּיתוּour sonsבָּנֵינוּfromלְבִלְתִּיfearingיְרֹאYHWH.’יְהוָה

So we said,וַנֹּאמֶר‘Let us nowנָּאset aboutנַעֲשֶׂהbuildingלִבְנוֹתourselvesלָנוּthe altar,הַמִּזְבֵּחַnotלֹאfor burnt offeringלְעוֹלָהand notוְלֹאfor sacrifice,לְזָבַח

butכִּיthatitהוּאmay bea witnessעֵדbetween usבֵּינֵינוּand you,וּבֵינֵיכֶםand betweenוּבֵיןour generationsדֹּרוֹתֵינוּafter us,אַחֲרֵינוּthat we serveלַעֲבֹדthe serviceעֲבֹדַתof YHWHיְהוָהbefore himלְפָנָיוwith our burnt offeringsבְּעֹלוֹתֵינוּand with our sacrificesוּבִזְבָחֵינוּand with our peace offerings;וּבִשְׁלָמֵינוּso that your sonsוְ בְנֵיכֶםwill notלֹאsayיֹאמְרוּtomorrowמָחָרto our sons,לְבָנֵינוּ“You have noאֵין לָכֶםportionחֵלֶקin YHWH.”’בַּיהוָה

And we said,וַנֹּאמֶר‘And it shall be,וְהָיָהwhenכִּיthey say thisיֹאמְרוּto usאֵלֵינוּand toוְאֶלour generationsדֹּרֹתֵינוּtomorrow,מָחָרthat we will say,וְאָמַרְנוּ“Seeרְאוּthe modelתַּבְנִיתof the altarמִזְבַּחof YHWH,יְהוָהwhichאֲשֶׁרour fathersאֲבוֹתֵינוּmade,עָשׂוּnotלֹאfor burnt offeringלְעוֹלָהand notוְלֹאfor sacrifice,לְזֶבַחbutכִּיitהוּאisa witnessעֵדbetween usבֵּינֵינוּand you.”’וּבֵינֵיכֶם

Far be itחָלִילָהfrom usלָּנוּ מִמֶּנּוּto rebelלִמְרֹדagainst YHWHבַּיהוָהand to turn backוְלָשׁוּבtodayהַיּוֹםfrom followingמֵאַחֲרֵיYHWHיְהוָהby buildingלִבְנוֹתan altarמִזְבֵּחַfor burnt offering,לְעֹלָהfor grain offering,לְמִנְחָהand for sacrifice,וּלְזָבַחbesidesמִלְּבַדthe altarמִזְבַּחof YHWHיְהוָהour Elohimאֱלֹהֵינוּthatאֲשֶׁרisbeforeלִפְנֵיhis dwelling!”מִשְׁכָּנוֹ

And Phinehasוַ פִּינְחָסthe priest,הַכֹּהֵןand the chiefsוּנְשִׂיאֵיof the community,הָעֵדָהand the headsוְרָאשֵׁיof the thousandsאַלְפֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלwhoאֲשֶׁרwerewith him,אִתּוֹheardיִּשְׁמַעthe wordsהַדְּבָרִיםthatאֲשֶׁרthe sonsבְּנֵיof Reuben,רְאוּבֵןthe sonsוּבְנֵיof Gad,גָדand the sonsוּבְנֵיof Manassehמְנַשֶּׁהspoke,דִּבְּרוּand it was goodוַיִּיטַבin their eyes.בְּעֵינֵיהֶם

And Phinehasוַ פִּינְחָסsonבֶּןof Eleazarאֶלְעָזָרthe priestהַכֹּהֵןsaidיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Reuben,רְאוּבֵןtoוְאֶלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Gad,גָדand toוְאֶלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Manasseh,מְנַשֶּׁה“Todayהַיּוֹםwe knowיָדַעְנוּthatכִּיYHWHיְהוָהisin our midst,בְתוֹכֵנוּbecauseאֲשֶׁרyou have notלֹאcommittedמְעַלְתֶּםthisהַזֶּהunfaithfulnessהַמַּעַלagainst YHWH.בַּיהוָהNowאָזyou have deliveredהִצַּלְתֶּםthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלfrom the handמִיַּדof YHWH.”יְהוָה

Then Phinehasוַ פִּינְחָסsonבֶּןof Eleazarאֶלְעָזָרthe priest,הַכֹּהֵןand the chiefs,וְהַנְּשִׂיאִיםreturnedיָּשָׁבfromמֵאֵתthe sonsבְּנֵיof Reubenרְאוּבֵןand fromוּמֵאֵתthe sonsבְּנֵיof Gad,גָדfrom the landמֵאֶרֶץof Gilead,הַגִּלְעָדtoאֶלthe landאֶרֶץof Canaan,כְּנַעַןtoאֶלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלand they brought backוַיָּשִׁבוּwordדָּבָרto them.אוֹתָם

And the reportהַדָּבָרwas goodוַיִּיטַבin the eyesבְּעֵינֵיof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israel;יִשְׂרָאֵלand the sonsוַ בְּנֵיof IsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלblessedיְבָרֲכוּElohim,אֱלֹהִיםand did notוְלֹאspeakאָמְרוּof going upלַעֲלוֹתagainst themעֲלֵיהֶםwith the armyלַצָּבָאto destroyלְשַׁחֵתthe landהָאָרֶץwhereאֲשֶׁר בָּהּthe sonsבְּנֵיof Reubenרְאוּבֵןand the sonsוּבְנֵיof Gadגָדlived.יֹשְׁבִים

And the sonsוַ בְּנֵיof Reubenרְאוּבֵןand the sonsוּבְנֵיof Gadגָדnamedיִּקְרְאוּthe altarלַמִּזְבֵּחַWitness:“Forכִּיitהוּאisa witnessעֵדbetween usבֵּינֹתֵינוּthatכִּיYHWHיְהוָהisElohim.”הָאֱלֹהִים
