When the daysוַ יְמֵיof Davidדָוִדdrew nearיִּקְרְבוּfor him to die,לָמוּתhe commandedוַיְצַוSolomonאֶת שְׁלֹמֹהhis son,בְנוֹsaying,לֵאמֹר
“Iאָנֹכִיam goingהֹלֵךְthe wayבְּדֶרֶךְof allכָּלthe earth.הָאָרֶץBe strong,וְחָזַקְתָּand beוְהָיִיתָa man.לְאִישׁ
And keepוְשָׁמַרְתָּthe chargeאֶת מִשְׁמֶרֶתof YHWHיְהוָהyour Elohim,אֱלֹהֶיךָwalkingלָלֶכֶתin his waysבִּדְרָכָיוand keepingלִשְׁמֹרhis statutes,חֻקֹּתָיוhis commandments,מִצְוֺתָיוhis rules,וּמִשְׁפָּטָיוand his testimonies,וְעֵדְוֺתָיוasכַּit is writtenכָּתוּבin the instructionבְּתוֹרַתof Moses,מֹשֶׁהso thatלְמַעַןyou may act wiselyתַּשְׂכִּילin allאֵת כָּלthatאֲשֶׁרyou doתַּעֲשֶׂהand whereverוְאֵת כָּל אֲשֶׁר שָׁםyou turn,תִּפְנֶה
so thatלְמַעַןYHWHיְהוָהmay confirmיָקִיםhis wordאֶת דְּבָרוֹthatאֲשֶׁרhe spokeדִּבֶּרconcerning me,עָלַיsaying,לֵאמֹר‘Ifאִםyour sonsבָנֶיךָkeepיִשְׁמְרוּtheir way,אֶת דַּרְכָּםwalkingלָלֶכֶתbefore meלְפָנַיin truthבֶּאֱמֶתwith allבְּכָלtheir heartלְבָבָםand with allוּבְכָלtheir soul,’נַפְשָׁםsaying,לֵאמֹר‘there shall notלֹאbe cut offיִכָּרֵתfor youלְךָa manאִישׁfromמֵעַלthe throneכִּסֵּאof Israel.’יִשְׂרָאֵל
Moreover,וְגַםyouאַתָּהknowיָדַעְתָּwhatאֵת אֲשֶׁרJoabיוֹאָבsonבֶּןof Zeruiahצְרוּיָהdidעָשָׂהto me,לִיwhatאֲשֶׁרhe didעָשָׂהto the twoלִשְׁנֵיcommandersשָׂרֵיof the armiesצִבְאוֹתof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלto Abnerלְאַבְנֵרsonבֶּןof Nerנֵרand to Amasaוְלַעֲמָשָׂאsonבֶןof Jether,יֶתֶרwhom he killed,וַיַּהַרְגֵםand he setוַיָּשֶׂםthe bloodדְּמֵיof warמִלְחָמָהin time of peaceבְּשָׁלֹםand putוַיִּתֵּןthe bloodדְּמֵיof warמִלְחָמָהon his beltבַּחֲגֹרָתוֹthat wasאֲשֶׁרaround his waistבְּמָתְנָיוand on his sandalוּבְנַעֲלוֹthat wereאֲשֶׁרon his feet.בְּרַגְלָיו
So actוְעָשִׂיתָaccording to your wisdom,כְּחָכְמָתֶךָand do notוְלֹאbring downתוֹרֵדhis gray hairשֵׂיבָתוֹin peaceבְּשָׁלֹםto Sheol.שְׁאֹל
But to the sonsוְלִבְנֵיof Barzillaiבַרְזִלַּיthe Gileaditeהַגִּלְעָדִיshowתַּעֲשֶׂהloyal love,חֶסֶדand let them beוְהָיוּamong those who eatבְּאֹכְלֵיat your table;שֻׁלְחָנֶךָforכִּיsoכֵןthey came nearקָרְבוּto meאֵלַיwhen I fledבְּבָרְחִיfromמִפְּנֵיAbsalomאַבְשָׁלוֹםyour brother.אָחִיךָ
And there isוְהִנֵּהwith youעִמְּךָShimeiשִׁמְעִיsonבֶןof Gera,גֵּרָאthe Benjaminiteבֶן הַיְמִינִיfrom Bahurim,מִבַּחֻרִיםwhoוְהוּאcursed meקִלְלַנִיwith a grievousנִמְרֶצֶתcurseקְלָלָהon the dayבְּיוֹםI wentלֶכְתִּיto Mahanaim;מַחֲנָיִםbut heוְהוּאcame downיָרַדto meet meלִקְרָאתִיat the Jordan,הַיַּרְדֵּןand I sworeוָאֶשָּׁבַעto himלוֹby YHWH,בַיהוָהsaying,לֵאמֹר‘I will notאִםput you to deathאֲמִיתְךָwith the sword.’בֶּחָרֶב
But nowוְעַתָּהdo notאַלleave him unpunished,תְּנַקֵּהוּforכִּיyouאָתָּהare a wiseחָכָםman,אִישׁand you will knowוְיָדַעְתָּwhatאֵת אֲשֶׁרyou should doתַּעֲשֶׂהto him,לּוֹand you shall bring downוְהוֹרַדְתָּhis gray hairאֶת שֵׂיבָתוֹwith bloodבְּדָםto Sheol.”שְׁאוֹל
And Davidוַ דָּוִדlay downיִּשְׁכַּבwithעִםhis fathersאֲבֹתָיוand was buriedוַיִּקָּבֵרin the cityבְּעִירof David.דָּוִד
And the daysוְהַיָּמִיםthatאֲשֶׁרDavidדָּוִדreignedמָלַךְoverעַלIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלwere fortyאַרְבָּעִיםyears:שָׁנָהin Hebronבְּחֶבְרוֹןhe reignedמָלַךְsevenשֶׁבַעyears,שָׁנִיםand in Jerusalemוּבִירוּשָׁלִַםhe reignedמָלַךְthirtyשְׁלֹשִׁיםand threeוְשָׁלֹשׁyears.שָׁנִים
And Solomonוּשְׁלֹמֹהsatיָשַׁבonעַלthe throneכִּסֵּאof Davidדָּוִדhis father,אָבִיוand his kingdomוַ מַלְכֻתוֹwas establishedתִּכֹּןfirmly.מְאֹד
Then Adonijahוַ אֲדֹנִיָּהוּsonבֶןof HaggithחַגֵּיתcameיָּבֹאtoאֶלBathsheba,בַּת שֶׁבַעthe motherאֵםof Solomon.שְׁלֹמֹהAnd she said,וַתֹּאמֶר“Is your comingהֲ בֹּאֶךָin peace?”שָׁלוֹםAnd he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“In peace.”שָׁלוֹם
And he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“I haveלִיa wordדָּבָרfor you.”אֵלָיִךְAnd she said,וַתֹּאמֶר“Speak.”דַּבֵּר
And he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Youאַתְּknowיָדַעַתְּthatכִּיthe kingdomהַמְּלוּכָהwasהָיְתָהmine,לִיand that on meוְעָלַיallכָלIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלhad setשָׂמוּtheir facesפְּנֵיהֶםfor me to reign;לִמְלֹךְbut the kingdomוַ הַמְּלוּכָהturned aroundתִּסֹּבand becameוַתְּהִיmy brother’s,לְאָחִיforכִּיit wasהָיְתָהhisלּוֹfromמֵYHWH.יְהוָה
And nowוְעַתָּהoneאַחַתrequestשְׁאֵלָהIאָנֹכִיam askingשֹׁאֵלof you;מֵאִתָּךְdo notאַלrefuse me.”תָּשִׁבִי אֶת פָּנָיAnd she saidוַתֹּאמֶרto him,אֵלָיו“Speak.”דַּבֵּר
And he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Pleaseנָאspeakאִמְרִיto Solomonלִשְׁלֹמֹהthe kingהַמֶּלֶךְ— forכִּיhe will notלֹאrefuse youיָשִׁיב אֶת פָּנָיִךְ— that he giveוְיִתֶּןmeלִיAbishagאֶת אֲבִישַׁגthe Shunammiteהַשּׁוּנַמִּיתas a wife.”לְאִשָּׁה
And Bathshebaוַ בַּת שֶׁבַעsaid,תֹּאמֶר“Good;טוֹבIאָנֹכִיwill speakאֲדַבֵּרfor youעָלֶיךָtoאֶלthe king.”הַמֶּלֶךְ
So Bathshebaוַ בַת שֶׁבַעwentתָּבֹאtoאֶלKingהַמֶּלֶךְSolomonשְׁלֹמֹהto speakלְדַבֶּרto himלוֹforעַלAdonijah.אֲדֹנִיָּהוּAnd the kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְroseיָּקָםto meet herלִקְרָאתָהּand bowed downוַיִּשְׁתַּחוּto her,לָהּand satוַיֵּשֶׁבonעַלhis throneכִּסְאוֹand setוַיָּשֶׂםa throneכִּסֵּאfor the motherלְאֵםof the king,הַמֶּלֶךְand she satוַתֵּשֶׁבat his right.לִימִינוֹ
And she said,וַתֹּאמֶר“OneאַחַתsmallקְטַנָּהrequestשְׁאֵלָהIאָנֹכִיam askingשֹׁאֶלֶתof you;מֵאִתָּךְdo notאַלrefuse me.”תָּשֶׁב אֶת פָּנָיAnd the kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְsaidיֹּאמֶרto her,לָהּ“Ask,שַׁאֲלִיmy mother,אִמִּיforכִּיI will notלֹאrefuse you.”אָשִׁיב אֶת פָּנָיִךְ
And she said,וַתֹּאמֶר“Let Abishagאֶת אֲבִישַׁגthe Shunammiteהַשֻּׁנַמִּיתbe givenיֻתַּןto Adonijahלַאֲדֹנִיָּהוּyour brotherאָחִיךָas a wife.”לְאִשָּׁה
And Kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְSolomonשְׁלֹמֹהansweredיַּעַןand saidוַיֹּאמֶרto his mother,לְאִמּוֹ“And whyוְלָמָהare youאַתְּaskingשֹׁאֶלֶתAbishagאֶת אֲבִישַׁגthe Shunammiteהַשֻּׁנַמִּיתfor Adonijah?לַאֲדֹנִיָּהוּAskוְשַׁאֲלִיfor himלוֹthe kingdomאֶת הַמְּלוּכָה— forכִּיheהוּאis my brother,אָחִיolderהַגָּדוֹלthan I —מִמֶּנִּיfor him,וְלוֹand for Abiatharוּלְאֶבְיָתָרthe priest,הַכֹּהֵןand for Joabוּלְיוֹאָבsonבֶּןof Zeruiah!”צְרוּיָה
And Kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְSolomonשְׁלֹמֹהsworeיִּשָּׁבַעby YHWH,בַּיהוָהsaying,לֵאמֹר“Soכֹּהmay Elohimאֱלֹהִיםdoיַעֲשֶׂהto me,לִּיand soוְכֹהmay he add,יוֹסִיףforכִּיagainst his own lifeבְנַפְשׁוֹAdonijahאֲדֹנִיָּהוּhas spokenדִּבֶּרthisהַזֶּהword!אֶת הַדָּבָר
And now,וְעַתָּהas YHWHיְהוָהlives,חַיwhoאֲשֶׁרhas established meהֱכִינַנִיand set meוַיּוֹשִׁיבַנִיonעַלthe throneכִּסֵּאof Davidדָּוִדmy father,אָבִיand whoוַאֲשֶׁרhas madeעָשָׂהfor meלִיa house,בַּיִתasכַּאֲשֶׁרhe spoke,דִּבֵּרsurelyכִּיtodayהַיּוֹםAdonijahאֲדֹנִיָּהוּshall be put to death.”יוּמַת
And Kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְSolomonשְׁלֹמֹהsentיִּשְׁלַחby the handבְּיַדof Benaiahבְּנָיָהוּsonבֶןof Jehoiada,יְהוֹיָדָעand he fell uponוַיִּפְגַּעhim,בּוֹand he died.וַיָּמֹת
And to Abiatharוּלְאֶבְיָתָרthe priestהַכֹּהֵןthe kingהַמֶּלֶךְsaid,אָמַר“Goלֵךְto Anathoth,עֲנָתֹתtoעַלyour fields,שָׂדֶיךָforכִּיyouאָתָּהdeserve death;אִישׁ מָוֶתbut on this dayוּבַיּוֹם הַזֶּהI will notלֹאput you to death,אֲמִיתֶךָbecauseכִּיyou carriedנָשָׂאתָthe arkאֶת אֲרוֹןof AdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWHיְהֹוִהbeforeלִפְנֵיDavidדָּוִדmy father,אָבִיand becauseוְכִיyou were afflictedהִתְעַנִּיתָin allבְּכֹלthatאֲשֶׁרmy fatherאָבִיwas afflicted.”הִתְעַנָּה
So Solomonוַ שְׁלֹמֹהexpelledיְגָרֶשׁAbiatharאֶת אֶבְיָתָרfrom beingמִהְיוֹתpriestכֹּהֵןto YHWH,לַיהוָהto fulfillלְמַלֵּאthe wordאֶת דְּבַרof YHWHיְהוָהthatאֲשֶׁרhe had spokenדִּבֶּרconcerningעַלthe houseבֵּיתof Eliעֵלִיin Shiloh.בְּשִׁלֹה
And the newsוְהַשְּׁמֻעָהcameבָּאָהtoעַדJoabיוֹאָב— forכִּיJoabיוֹאָבhad inclinedנָטָהtowardאַחֲרֵיAdonijah,אֲדֹנִיָּהthough towardוְאַחֲרֵיAbsalomאַבְשָׁלוֹםhe had notלֹאinclined —נָטָהand Joabוַ יוֹאָבfledיָּנָסtoאֶלthe tentאֹהֶלof YHWHיְהוָהand held fastוַיַּחֲזֵקto the hornsבְּקַרְנוֹתof the altar.הַמִּזְבֵּחַ
And it was toldוַיֻּגַּדto KingלַמֶּלֶךְSolomonשְׁלֹמֹהthatכִּיJoabיוֹאָבhad fledנָסtoאֶלthe tentאֹהֶלof YHWH,יְהוָהand there he wasוְהִנֵּהbesideאֵצֶלthe altar.הַמִּזְבֵּחַAnd Solomonוַ שְׁלֹמֹהsentיִּשְׁלַחBenaiahאֶת בְּנָיָהוּsonבֶןof Jehoiada,יְהוֹיָדָעsaying,לֵאמֹר“Go,לֵךְfall uponפְּגַעhim.”בּוֹ
And Benaiahוַ בְנָיָהוּcameיָּבֹאtoאֶלthe tentאֹהֶלof YHWHיְהוָהand saidוַיֹּאמֶרto him,אֵלָיו“Thusכֹּהsaysאָמַרthe king,הַמֶּלֶךְ‘Come out.’”צֵאAnd he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“No,לֹאbutכִּיhereפֹהI will die.”אָמוּתAnd Benaiahוַ בְּנָיָהוּbrought backיָּשֶׁבwordדָּבָרto the king,אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְsaying,לֵאמֹר“ThusכֹּהJoabיוֹאָבspoke,דִבֶּרand thusוְכֹהhe answered me.”עָנָנִי
And the kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְsaidיֹּאמֶרto him,לוֹ“Doעֲשֵׂהasכַּאֲשֶׁרhe has spoken:דִּבֶּרfall uponוּפְגַעhimבּוֹand bury him,וּקְבַרְתּוֹand take awayוַהֲסִירֹתָthe bloodדְּמֵיthatאֲשֶׁרJoabיוֹאָבshedשָׁפַךְwithout causeחִנָּםfrom meמֵעָלַיand fromוּמֵעַלthe houseבֵּיתof my father.אָבִי
And YHWH will bring backוְהֵשִׁיב יְהוָהhis bloodאֶת דָּמוֹonעַלhis head,רֹאשׁוֹbecauseאֲשֶׁרhe fell uponפָּגַעtwoבִּשְׁנֵיmenאֲנָשִׁיםmore righteousצַדִּקִיםand betterוְטֹבִיםthan heמִמֶּנּוּand killed themוַיַּהַרְגֵםwith the sword,בַּחֶרֶבwhile my fatherוְאָבִיDavidדָוִדdid notלֹאknow it:יָדָעAbnerאֶת אַבְנֵרsonבֶּןof Ner,נֵרcommanderשַׂרof the armyצְבָאof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלand Amasaוְאֶת עֲמָשָׂאsonבֶןof Jether,יֶתֶרcommanderשַׂרof the armyצְבָאof Judah.יְהוּדָה
So their bloodוְ דְמֵיהֶםshall returnשָׁבוּon the headבְּרֹאשׁof Joabיוֹאָבand on the headוּבְרֹאשׁof his offspringזַרְעוֹforever;לְעֹלָםbut for Davidוּלְדָוִדand for his offspringוּלְזַרְעוֹand for his houseוּלְבֵיתוֹand for his throneוּלְכִסְאוֹthere shall beיִהְיֶהpeaceשָׁלוֹםforeverעַד עוֹלָםfromמֵעִםYHWH.”יְהוָה
Then Benaiahוַ בְּנָיָהוּsonבֶּןof Jehoiadaיְהוֹיָדָעwent upיַּעַלand fell uponוַיִּפְגַּעhimבּוֹand put him to death,וַיְמִתֵהוּand he was buriedוַיִּקָּבֵרat his houseבְּבֵיתוֹin the wilderness.בַּמִּדְבָּר
And the kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְputיִּתֵּןBenaiahאֶת בְּנָיָהוּsonבֶןof Jehoiadaיְהוֹיָדָעin his placeתַּחְתָּיוoverעַלthe army;הַצָּבָאand Zadokוְאֶת צָדוֹקthe priestהַכֹּהֵןthe kingהַמֶּלֶךְputנָתַןin the placeתַּחַתof Abiathar.אֶבְיָתָר
And the kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְsentיִּשְׁלַחand calledוַיִּקְרָאShimeiלְשִׁמְעִיand saidוַיֹּאמֶרto him,לוֹ“Buildבְּנֵהyourselfלְךָa houseבַיִתin Jerusalemבִּירוּשָׁלִַםand liveוְיָשַׁבְתָּthere,שָׁםand do notוְלֹאgo outתֵצֵאfrom thereמִשָּׁםthis wayאָנֶהor that.וָאָנָה
For it will be,וְהָיָהon the dayבְּיוֹםyou go outצֵאתְךָand crossוְעָבַרְתָּthe brookאֶת נַחַלKidron,קִדְרוֹןknow for certainיָדֹעַ תֵּדַעthatכִּיyou shall surely die;מוֹת תָּמוּתyour bloodדָּמְךָshall beיִהְיֶהon your head.”בְרֹאשֶׁךָ
And Shimeiוַ שִׁמְעִיsaidיֹּאמֶרto the king,לַמֶּלֶךְ“The wordהַדָּבָרis good;טוֹבasכַּאֲשֶׁרmy lordאֲדֹנִיthe kingהַמֶּלֶךְhas spoken,דִּבֶּרsoכֵּןwill your servantעַבְדֶּךָdo.”יַעֲשֶׂהAnd Shimeiוַ שִׁמְעִיlivedיֵּשֶׁבin Jerusalemבִּירוּשָׁלִַםmanyרַבִּיםdays.יָמִים
And it happenedוַיְהִיat the endמִקֵּץof threeשָׁלֹשׁyearsשָׁנִיםthat twoוַ שְׁנֵיslavesעֲבָדִיםof ShimeiלְשִׁמְעִיfledיִּבְרְחוּtoאֶלAchishאָכִישׁsonבֶּןof Maacah,מַעֲכָהkingמֶלֶךְof Gath.גַּתAnd they toldוַיַּגִּידוּShimei,לְשִׁמְעִיsaying,לֵאמֹר“Look,הִנֵּהyour slavesעֲבָדֶיךָare in Gath.”בְּגַת
And Shimeiוַ שִׁמְעִיroseיָּקָםand saddledוַיַּחֲבֹשׁhis donkeyאֶת חֲמֹרוֹand wentוַיֵּלֶךְto GathגַּתָהtoאֶלAchishאָכִישׁto seekלְבַקֵּשׁhis slaves.אֶת עֲבָדָיוAnd Shimeiוַ שִׁמְעִיwentיֵּלֶךְand broughtוַיָּבֵאhis slavesאֶת עֲבָדָיוfrom Gath.מִגַּת
And it was toldוַיֻּגַּדto SolomonלִשְׁלֹמֹהthatכִּיShimeiשִׁמְעִיhad goneהָלַךְfrom Jerusalemמִירוּשָׁלִַםto Gathגַּתand returned.וַיָּשֹׁב
And the kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְsentיִּשְׁלַחand calledוַיִּקְרָאShimeiלְשִׁמְעִיand saidוַיֹּאמֶרto him,אֵלָיו“Did I notהֲלוֹאmake you swearהִשְׁבַּעְתִּיךָby YHWH,בַיהוָהand testifyוָאָעִדagainst you,בְּךָsaying,לֵאמֹר‘On the dayבְּיוֹםyou go outצֵאתְךָand goוְהָלַכְתָּthis wayאָנֶהor that,וָאָנָהknow for certainיָדֹעַ תֵּדַעthatכִּיyou shall surely die’?מוֹת תָּמוּתAnd you saidוַתֹּאמֶרto me,אֵלַי‘The wordהַדָּבָרis good;טוֹבI have heard it.’שָׁמָעְתִּי
Why thenוּמַדּוּעַhave you notלֹאkeptשָׁמַרְתָּthe oathאֵת שְׁבֻעַתof YHWHיְהוָהandוְthe commandmentאֶת הַמִּצְוָהthatאֲשֶׁרI commandedצִוִּיתִיyou?”עָלֶיךָ
And the kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְsaidיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלShimei,שִׁמְעִי“Youאַתָּהknowיָדַעְתָּallאֵת כָּלthe evilהָרָעָהthatאֲשֶׁרyour heartלְבָבְךָknows,יָדַעthatאֲשֶׁרyou didעָשִׂיתָto Davidלְדָוִדmy father;אָבִיso YHWHוְ יְהוָהwill bring backהֵשִׁיבyour evilאֶת רָעָתְךָon your head.בְּרֹאשֶׁךָ
But KingוְהַמֶּלֶךְSolomonשְׁלֹמֹהshall be blessed,בָּרוּךְand the throneוְכִסֵּאof Davidדָוִדshall beיִהְיֶהestablishedנָכוֹןbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWHיְהוָהforever.”עַד עוֹלָם
Then the kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְcommandedיְצַוBenaiahאֶת בְּנָיָהוּsonבֶּןof Jehoiada,יְהוֹיָדָעand he went outוַיֵּצֵאand fell uponוַיִּפְגַּעhim,בּוֹand he died.וַיָּמֹתAnd the kingdomוְהַמַּמְלָכָהwas establishedנָכוֹנָהin the handבְּיַדof Solomon.שְׁלֹמֹה
