And it happened,וַיְהִיafter manyרַבִּיםdays,יָמִיםthat the wordוּדְבַרof YHWHיְהוָהcameהָיָהtoאֶלElijahאֵלִיָּהוּin the thirdבַּ הַשְּׁלִישִׁיתyear,שָּׁנָהsaying,לֵאמֹר“Go,לֵךְshow yourselfהֵרָאֵהtoאֶלAhab,אַחְאָבand I will giveוְאֶתְּנָהrainמָטָרonעַלthe faceפְּנֵיof the ground.”הָאֲדָמָה
So Elijahוַ אֵלִיָּהוּwentיֵּלֶךְto show himselfלְהֵרָאוֹתtoאֶלAhab.אַחְאָבAnd the famineוְהָרָעָבwas severeחָזָקin Samaria.בְּשֹׁמְרוֹן
AhabאַחְאָבcalledוַיִּקְרָאObadiah,אֶל עֹבַדְיָהוּwhoאֲשֶׁרwas overעַלthe household.הַבָּיִתNow Obadiahוְעֹבַדְיָהוּfearedהָיָה יָרֵאYHWHיְהוָהgreatly;מְאֹד
and it happened,וַיְהִיwhen Jezebelבְּ אִיזֶבֶלwas cutting offהַכְרִיתthe prophetsנְבִיאֵיof YHWH,יְהוָהthat Obadiahוַ עֹבַדְיָהוּtookיִּקַּחa hundredמֵאָהprophetsנְבִאִיםand hid them,וַיַּחְבִּיאֵםfiftyחֲמִשִּׁיםmenאִישׁto each cave,בַּמְּעָרָהand fed themוְכִלְכְּלָםwith breadלֶחֶםand water.וָמָיִם
AhabאַחְאָבsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלObadiah,עֹבַדְיָהוּ“Goלֵךְthrough the landבָּאָרֶץtoאֶלallכָּלthe springsמַעְיְנֵיof waterהַמַּיִםand toוְאֶלallכָּלthe brooks;הַנְּחָלִיםperhapsאוּלַיwe will findנִמְצָאgrassחָצִירand keep aliveוּנְחַיֶּהhorseסוּסand mule,וָפֶרֶדand notוְלוֹאhave to cut off someנַכְרִיתofמֵthe animals.”הַבְּהֵמָה
So they dividedוַיְחַלְּקוּthe landאֶת הָאָרֶץbetween themלָהֶםto pass throughלַעֲבָרit;בָּהּAhabאַחְאָבwentהָלַךְby oneבְּ אֶחָדwayדֶרֶךְby himself,לְבַדּוֹand Obadiahוְעֹבַדְיָהוּwentהָלַךְby anotherבְּ אֶחָדwayדֶרֶךְby himself.לְבַדּוֹ
As Obadiahוַיְהִי עֹבַדְיָהוּwas on the way,בַּדֶּרֶךְthereוְהִנֵּהwas Elijahאֵלִיָּהוּto meet him.לִקְרָאתוֹHe recognized himוַיַּכִּרֵהוּand fellוַיִּפֹּלonעַלhis faceפָּנָיוand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Is it you,הַאַתָּה זֶהmy lordאֲדֹנִיElijah?”אֵלִיָּהוּ
He saidוַיֹּאמֶרto him,לוֹ“It is I.אָנִיGo,לֵךְsayאֱמֹרto your lord,לַאדֹנֶיךָ‘Hereהִנֵּהis Elijah.’”אֵלִיָּהוּ
He said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Whatמֶהsin have I committed,חָטָאתִיthatכִּיyouאַתָּהare givingנֹתֵןyour servantעַבְדְּךָinto the handבְּיַדof Ahabאַחְאָבto put me to death?לַהֲמִיתֵנִי
As YHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָlives,חַיthere is noאִם יֶשׁnationגּוֹיor kingdomוּמַמְלָכָהwhereאֲשֶׁר שָׁםmy lordאֲדֹנִיhas notלֹאsentשָׁלַחto seek you;לְבַקֶּשְׁךָand when they said,וְאָמְרוּ‘He is not here,’אָיִןhe madeוְthe kingdomאֶת הַמַּמְלָכָהandוְthe nationאֶת הַגּוֹיswearהִשְׁבִּיעַthatכִּיthey had notלֹאfound you.יִמְצָאֶכָּה
And nowוְעַתָּהyouאַתָּהsay,אֹמֵר‘Go,לֵךְsayאֱמֹרto your lord,לַאדֹנֶיךָ“Hereהִנֵּהis Elijah.”’אֵלִיָּהוּ
And it will be,וְהָיָהwhen Iאֲנִיgoאֵלֵךְfrom you,מֵאִתָּךְthatוְthe spiritרוּחַof YHWHיְהוָהwill carry youיִשָּׂאֲךָtoעַלwhereאֲשֶׁרI do notלֹאknow;אֵדָעand I will comeוּבָאתִיto tellלְהַגִּידAhab,לְאַחְאָבand he will notוְלֹאfind you,יִמְצָאֲךָand he will kill me.וַהֲרָגָנִיYet I,וְyour servant,עַבְדְּךָhave fearedיָרֵאYHWHיְהוָהfrom my youth.מִנְּעֻרָי
Has it notהֲלֹאbeen toldהֻגַּדto my lordלַאדֹנִיwhatאֲשֶׁרI didעָשִׂיתִיwhen Jezebelבַּ אִיזֶבֶלwas killingהֲרֹגthe prophetsנְבִיאֵיof YHWH,יְהוָהhow I hidוָאַחְבִּאa hundredמֵאָהmenאִישׁof the prophetsמִנְּבִיאֵיof YHWH,יְהוָהfiftyחֲמִשִּׁיםby fiftyחֲמִשִּׁיםmenאִישׁin each cave,בַּמְּעָרָהand fed themוָאֲכַלְכְּלֵםwith breadלֶחֶםand water?וָמָיִם
And nowוְעַתָּהyouאַתָּהsay,אֹמֵר‘Go,לֵךְsayאֱמֹרto your lord,לַאדֹנֶיךָ“Hereהִנֵּהis Elijah”’;אֵלִיָּהוּand he will kill me.”וַהֲרָגָנִי
Elijahאֵלִיָּהוּsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“As YHWHיְהוָהTsevaotצְבָאוֹתlives,חַיbefore whomאֲשֶׁר לְפָנָיוI stand,עָמַדְתִּיsurelyכִּיtodayהַיּוֹםI will show myselfאֵרָאֶהto him.”אֵלָיו
So Obadiahוַ עֹבַדְיָהוּwentיֵּלֶךְto meetלִקְרַאתAhabאַחְאָבand toldוַיַּגֶּדhim;לוֹand Ahabוַ אַחְאָבwentיֵּלֶךְto meetלִקְרַאתElijah.אֵלִיָּהוּ
And it happened,וַיְהִיwhen Ahabכִּ אַחְאָבsawרְאוֹתElijah,אֵלִיָּהוּthat Ahabוַ אַחְאָבsaidיֹּאמֶרto him,אֵלָיו“Is it you,הַאַתָּה זֶהthe one who brings ruin onעֹכֵרIsrael?”יִשְׂרָאֵל
He said,וַיֹּאמֶר“I have notלֹאbrought ruin onעָכַרְתִּיIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלbutכִּי אִםyouאַתָּהand the houseוּבֵיתof your father have,אָבִיךָin your abandoningבַּעֲזָבְכֶםthe commandmentsמִצְוֺתof YHWH;יְהוָהand you have goneוַתֵּלֶךְafterאַחֲרֵיthe Baals.הַבְּעָלִים
Now then,וְעַתָּהsend,שְׁלַחgatherקְבֹץto meאֵלַיallכָּלIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלatאֶלMountהַרCarmel,הַכַּרְמֶלandוְthe fourאַרְבַּעhundredמֵאוֹתand fiftyוַחֲמִשִּׁיםprophetsנְבִיאֵיof Baalהַבַּעַלand the fourוּ אַרְבַּעhundredמֵאוֹתprophetsנְבִיאֵיof Asherah,הָאֲשֵׁרָהwho eatאֹכְלֵיat the tableשֻׁלְחַןof Jezebel.”אִיזָבֶל
So Ahabוַ אַחְאָבsent wordיִּשְׁלַחamong allבְּכָלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלand gatheredוַיִּקְבֹּץthe prophetsהַנְּבִיאִיםatאֶלMountהַרCarmel.הַכַּרְמֶל
Elijahאֵלִיָּהוּcame nearוַיִּגַּשׁtoאֶלallכָּלthe peopleהָעָםand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“How longעַד מָתַיwill youאַתֶּםgo limpingפֹּסְחִיםbetweenעַלthe twoשְׁתֵּיopinions?הַסְּעִפִּיםIfאִםYHWHיְהוָהis Elohim,הָאֱלֹהִיםgoלְכוּafter him;אַחֲרָיוand ifוְאִםBaal,הַבַּעַלgoלְכוּafter him.”אַחֲרָיוAnd the peopleוְ הָעָםdid notלֹאanswerעָנוּhimאֹתוֹa word.דָּבָר
Elijahאֵלִיָּהוּsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלthe people,הָעָם“Iאֲנִיam leftנוֹתַרְתִּיa prophetנָבִיאof YHWH,לַיהוָהI alone;לְבַדִּיand the prophetsוּנְבִיאֵיof Baalהַבַּעַלare fourאַרְבַּעhundredמֵאוֹתand fiftyוַחֲמִשִּׁיםmen.אִישׁ
Let them giveוְיִתְּנוּusלָנוּtwoשְׁנַיִםbulls;פָּרִיםand let them chooseוְיִבְחֲרוּfor themselvesלָהֶםthe oneהָאֶחָדbullהַפָּרand cut it in piecesוִינַתְּחֻהוּand lay itוְיָשִׂימוּonעַלthe wood,הָעֵצִיםbutוְputיָשִׂימוּnoלֹאfire to it;אֵשׁand Iוַאֲנִיwill prepareאֶעֱשֶׂהthe otherהָאֶחָדbullהַפָּרand lay itוְנָתַתִּיonעַלthe wood,הָעֵצִיםandוְI will putאָשִׂיםnoלֹאfire to it.אֵשׁ
Then you will callוּקְרָאתֶםon the nameבְּשֵׁםof your god,אֱלֹהֵיכֶםand Iוַאֲנִיwill callאֶקְרָאon the nameבְשֵׁםof YHWH;יְהוָהand it will beוְהָיָהthat the Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםwhoאֲשֶׁרanswersיַעֲנֶהby fire,בָאֵשׁheהוּאis Elohim.”הָאֱלֹהִיםAnd allוַ כָּלthe peopleהָעָםansweredיַּעַןand said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“The wordהַדָּבָרis good.”טוֹב
Elijahאֵלִיָּהוּsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto the prophetsלִנְבִיאֵיof Baal,הַבַּעַל“Chooseבַּחֲרוּfor yourselvesלָכֶםoneהָאֶחָדbullהַפָּרand prepare itוַעֲשׂוּfirst,רִאשֹׁנָהforכִּיyouאַתֶּםare the many;הָרַבִּיםand callוְקִרְאוּon the nameבְּשֵׁםof your god,אֱלֹהֵיכֶםbutוְputתָשִׂימוּnoלֹאfire to it.”אֵשׁ
They tookוַיִּקְחוּthe bullהַפָּרthatאֲשֶׁרhe gaveנָתַןthem,לָהֶםand prepared it,וַיַּעֲשׂוּand calledוַיִּקְרְאוּon the nameבְשֵׁםof Baalהַבַּעַלfromמֵmorningהַבֹּקֶרuntilוְעַדnoon,הַצָּהֳרַיִםsaying,לֵאמֹר“Baal,הַבַּעַלanswer us!”עֲנֵנוּBut there was noוְאֵיןvoice,קוֹלand noוְאֵיןone answering.עֹנֶהAnd they limpedוַיְפַסְּחוּaroundעַלthe altarהַמִּזְבֵּחַthatאֲשֶׁרhad been made.עָשָׂה
And it happenedוַיְהִיat noonבַצָּהֳרַיִםthat Elijahוַ אֵלִיָּהוּmockedיְהַתֵּלthemבָּהֶםand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Call outקִרְאוּwith a loudבְ גָּדוֹלvoice,קוֹלforכִּיheהוּאis a god!אֱלֹהִיםPerhapsכִּיhe is musing,שִׂיחַorוְכִיhe has stepped aside,שִׂיג לוֹorוְכִיhe is on a journey;דֶרֶךְ לוֹperhapsאוּלַיheהוּאis asleepיָשֵׁןand must wake up.”וְיִקָץ
They called outוַיִּקְרְאוּwith a loudבְּ גָּדוֹלvoice,קוֹלand cut themselves,וַיִּתְגֹּדְדוּaccording to their custom,כְּמִשְׁפָּטָםwith swordsבַּחֲרָבוֹתand spears,וּבָרְמָחִיםuntilעַדbloodדָּםpoured outשְׁפָךְon them.עֲלֵיהֶם
And it happened,וַיְהִיwhen noonהַצָּהֳרַיִםhad passed,כַּעֲבֹרthat they prophesiedוַיִּתְנַבְּאוּuntilעַדthe time of offeringלַעֲלוֹתthe grain offering;הַמִּנְחָהbut there was noוְאֵיןvoice,קוֹלand noוְאֵיןone answering,עֹנֶהand noוְאֵיןattention.קָשֶׁב
Elijahאֵלִיָּהוּsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto allלְכָלthe people,הָעָם“Come nearגְּשׁוּto me.”אֵלַיAnd allוַ כָלthe peopleהָעָםcame nearיִּגְּשׁוּto him.אֵלָיוAnd he repairedוַיְרַפֵּאthe altarמִזְבַּחof YHWHיְהוָהthat was torn down.הֶהָרוּס
Elijahאֵלִיָּהוּtookוַיִּקַּחtwelveשְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵהstones,אֲבָנִיםaccording to the numberכְּמִסְפַּרof the tribesשִׁבְטֵיof the sonsבְנֵיof Jacob,יַעֲקֹבto whomאֲשֶׁר אֵלָיוthe wordדְבַרof YHWHיְהוָהhad come,הָיָהsaying,לֵאמֹר“Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלshall beיִהְיֶהyour name.”שְׁמֶךָ
With the stonesהָאֲבָנִיםhe builtוַיִּבְנֶהan altarמִזְבֵּחַin the nameבְּשֵׁםof YHWH;יְהוָהand he madeוַיַּעַשׂa trench,תְּעָלָהlikeכְּan area for two seahsבֵית סָאתַיִםof seed,זֶרַעaroundסָבִיבthe altar.לַמִּזְבֵּחַ
He arrangedוַיַּעֲרֹךְthe wood,הָעֵצִיםcut in piecesוַיְנַתַּחthe bull,הַפָּרand laid itוַיָּשֶׂםonעַלthe wood.הָעֵצִים
And he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Fillמִלְאוּfourאַרְבָּעָהjarsכַדִּיםwith waterמַיִםand pour itוְיִצְקוּonעַלthe burnt offeringהָעֹלָהand onוְעַלthe wood.”הָעֵצִיםAnd he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Do it a second time”;שְׁנוּand they did it a second time.וַיִּשְׁנוּAnd he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Do it a third time”;שַׁלֵּשׁוּand they did it a third time.וַיְשַׁלֵּשׁוּ
The waterהַמַּיִםranוַיֵּלְכוּaroundסָבִיבthe altar,לַמִּזְבֵּחַandוְhe alsoגַםfilledמִלֵּאthe trenchהַתְּעָלָהwith water.מָיִם
And it happened,וַיְהִיat the time of offeringבַּעֲלוֹתthe grain offering,הַמִּנְחָהthat Elijahוַ אֵלִיָּהוּthe prophetהַנָּבִיאcame nearיִּגַּשׁand said,וַיֹּאמַר“YHWH,יְהוָהElohimאֱלֹהֵיof Abraham,אַבְרָהָםIsaac,יִצְחָקand Israel,וְיִשְׂרָאֵלtodayהַיּוֹםlet it be knownיִוָּדַעthatכִּיyouאַתָּהare Elohimאֱלֹהִיםin Israel,בְּיִשְׂרָאֵלand Iוַאֲנִיam your servant,עַבְדֶּךָand that by your wordוּבִדְבָרְךָI have doneעָשִׂיתִיallכָּלtheseהָאֵלֶּהthings.הַדְּבָרִים
Answer me,עֲנֵנִיYHWH,יְהוָהanswer me,עֲנֵנִיso thatוְthisהַזֶּהpeopleהָעָםmay knowיֵדְעוּthatכִּיyou,אַתָּהYHWH,יְהוָהare Elohim,הָאֱלֹהִיםand youוְאַתָּהhave turnedהֲסִבֹּתָtheir heartלִבָּםback.”אֲחֹרַנִּית
Then the fireוַ אֵשׁof YHWHיְהוָהfellתִּפֹּלand consumedוַתֹּאכַלthe burnt offeringהָעֹלָהand the woodוְ הָעֵצִיםand the stonesוְ הָאֲבָנִיםand the dust,וְ הֶעָפָרand the waterוְ הַמַּיִםthatאֲשֶׁרwas in the trenchבַּתְּעָלָהit licked up.לִחֵכָה
Allכָּלthe peopleהָעָםsaw it,וַיַּרְאand they fellוַיִּפְּלוּonעַלtheir facesפְּנֵיהֶםand said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“YHWH,יְהוָהheהוּאis Elohim!הָאֱלֹהִיםYHWH,יְהוָהheהוּאis Elohim!”הָאֱלֹהִים
Elijahאֵלִיָּהוּsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,לָהֶם“Seizeתִּפְשׂוּthe prophetsנְבִיאֵיof Baal;הַבַּעַלlet notאַלoneאִישׁof themמֵהֶםescape.”יִמָּלֵטSo they seized them,וַיִּתְפְּשׂוּםand Elijahוַ אֵלִיָּהוּbrought them downיּוֹרִדֵםtoאֶלthe brookנַחַלKishonקִישׁוֹןand slaughtered themוַיִּשְׁחָטֵםthere.שָׁם
Elijahאֵלִיָּהוּsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto Ahab,לְאַחְאָב“Go up,עֲלֵהeatאֱכֹלand drink,וּשְׁתֵהforכִּיthere is the soundקוֹלof the roarהֲמוֹןof rain.”הַגָּשֶׁם
So Ahabוַ אַחְאָבwent upיַּעֲלֶהto eatלֶאֱכֹלand to drink.וְלִשְׁתּוֹתAnd Elijahוְאֵלִיָּהוּwent upעָלָהtoאֶלthe topרֹאשׁof Carmel;הַכַּרְמֶלand he bent downוַיִּגְהַרto the groundאַרְצָהand putוַיָּשֶׂםhis faceפָּנָיוbetweenבֵּיןhis knees.בִּרְכָּיו
He saidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלhis young man,נַעֲרוֹ“Go up,עֲלֵהplease,נָאlookהַבֵּטtowardדֶּרֶךְthe sea.”יָםAnd he went upוַיַּעַלand lookedוַיַּבֵּטand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“There is nothing.”אֵין מְאוּמָהAnd he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Go back,”שֻׁבsevenשֶׁבַעtimes.פְּעָמִים
And it happenedוַיְהִיat the seventh timeבַּשְּׁבִעִיתthat he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Look,הִנֵּהa smallקְטַנָּהcloud,עָבlikeכְּthe palmכַףof a man,אִישׁis risingעֹלָהfromמִthe sea.”יָּםAnd he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Go up,עֲלֵהsayאֱמֹרtoאֶלAhab,אַחְאָב‘Hitch your chariotאֱסֹרand go down,וָרֵדso thatוְthe rainהַגָּשֶׁםdoes notלֹאstop you.’”יַעַצָרְכָה
And it happened,וַיְהִיin the meantime,עַד כֹּה וְעַד כֹּהthatוְthe heavensהַשָּׁמַיִםgrew darkהִתְקַדְּרוּwith cloudsעָבִיםand wind,וְרוּחַand there wasוַיְהִיa greatגָּדוֹלrain.גֶּשֶׁםAhabאַחְאָבrode in his chariotוַיִּרְכַּבand wentוַיֵּלֶךְto Jezreel.יִזְרְעֶאלָה
The handוְיַדof YHWHיְהוָהwasהָיְתָהonאֶלElijah;אֵלִיָּהוּand he girdedוַיְשַׁנֵּסhis waistמָתְנָיוand ranוַיָּרָץaheadלִפְנֵיof Ahabאַחְאָבtoעַדthe entrance ofבֹּאֲכָהJezreel.יִזְרְעֶאלָה
