Word study

Feast: a celebration for YHWH, above all the three pilgrimage feasts at which every male was to appear before him. It comes from the verb חָגַג (keep a feast).

Historical and cultural background

“Three times in the year all your males shall appear before YHWH”: at the Feast of Unleavened Bread, at the Feast of Weeks and at the Feast of Booths (Deuteronomy 16:16). Jeroboam held a festival in the eighth month, “like the festival that {was} in Judah”, so that the people would not go up to Jerusalem (1 Kings 12:32).

How we translate it

“Feast” 49 times and “feasts” 6; “festival” 6 (“celebrate it as a festival to YHWH”, Exodus 12:14; the festival Jeroboam devised, 1 Kings 12:32). It is distinct from מוֹעֵד, which this edition renders “appointed time”. The names are fixed: “the Feast of Booths”, “the Feast of Weeks”, “the Feast of Unleavened Bread” (Deuteronomy 16:16).
