He didוַיַּעַשׂwhat was evilהָרַעin the eyesבְּעֵינֵיof YHWH,יְהוָהonlyרַקnotלֹאlike the kingsכְּמַלְכֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלwhoאֲשֶׁרwereהָיוּbefore him.לְפָנָיו
Against himעָלָיוcame upעָלָהShalmaneserשַׁלְמַנְאֶסֶרkingמֶלֶךְof Assyria;אַשּׁוּרand Hosheaוַ הוֹשֵׁעַbecameיְהִיhis servantלוֹ עֶבֶדand paidוַיָּשֶׁבhimלוֹtribute.מִנְחָה
But the kingוַ מֶלֶךְof Assyriaאַשּׁוּרfoundיִּמְצָאin Hosheaבְּהוֹשֵׁעַa conspiracy,קֶשֶׁרforאֲשֶׁרhe had sentשָׁלַחmessengersמַלְאָכִיםto So,אֶל סוֹאkingמֶלֶךְof Egypt,מִצְרַיִםand had notוְלֹאbrought upהֶעֱלָהtributeמִנְחָהto the kingלְמֶלֶךְof Assyriaאַשּׁוּרas he had done yearכְּשָׁנָהby year;בְשָׁנָהso the kingוַ מֶלֶךְof Assyriaאַשּׁוּרdetained himיַּעַצְרֵהוּand bound himוַיַּאַסְרֵהוּin prison.בֵּית כֶּלֶא
The kingוַ מֶלֶךְof Assyriaאַשּׁוּרcame upיַּעַלthrough allבְּכָלthe land,הָאָרֶץwent upוַיַּעַלto Samaria,שֹׁמְרוֹןand besieged itוַיָּצַר עָלֶיהָthreeשָׁלֹשׁyears.שָׁנִים
In the ninth yearבִּשְׁנַת הַתְּשִׁיעִיתof Hosheaלְהוֹשֵׁעַthe kingמֶלֶךְof AssyriaאַשּׁוּרcapturedלָכַדSamariaאֶת שֹׁמְרוֹןand carried Israel into exileוַיֶּגֶל אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵלto Assyria,אַשּׁוּרָהand settled themוַיֹּשֶׁב אֹתָםin Halahבַּחְלַחand on the Habor,וּבְחָבוֹרthe riverנְהַרof Gozan,גּוֹזָןand in the citiesוְעָרֵיof the Medes.מָדָי
And it happenedוַיְהִיbecauseכִּיthe sonsבְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלhad sinnedחָטְאוּagainst YHWHלַיהוָהtheir Elohim,אֱלֹהֵיהֶםwho brought them upהַמַּעֲלֶה אֹתָםfrom the landמֵאֶרֶץof Egypt,מִצְרַיִםfrom underמִתַּחַתthe handיַדof Pharaohפַּרְעֹהkingמֶלֶךְof Egypt;מִצְרָיִםand they fearedוַיִּירְאוּotherאֲחֵרִיםgods,אֱלֹהִים
and walkedוַיֵּלְכוּin the statutesבְּחֻקּוֹתof the nationsהַגּוֹיִםwhomאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהdispossessedהוֹרִישׁbeforeמִפְּנֵיthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלand in those of the kingsוּמַלְכֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלwhichאֲשֶׁרthey made.עָשׂוּ
The sonsבְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלdid secretlyוַיְחַפְּאוּthingsדְּבָרִיםthatאֲשֶׁרwere notלֹאrightכֵןagainst YHWHעַל יְהוָהtheir Elohim;אֱלֹהֵיהֶםthey builtוַיִּבְנוּfor themselvesלָהֶםhigh placesבָּמוֹתin allבְּכָלtheir cities,עָרֵיהֶםfrom the towerמִמִּגְדַּלof the watchmenנוֹצְרִיםtoעַדthe fortified city.עִיר מִבְצָר
They set upוַיַּצִּבוּfor themselvesלָהֶםstanding stonesמַצֵּבוֹתand Asherahsוַאֲשֵׁרִיםon everyעַל כָּלhighגְבֹהָהhillגִּבְעָהand underוְתַחַתeveryכָּלleafyרַעֲנָןtree.עֵץ
They burned incenseוַיְקַטְּרוּthereשָׁםon allבְּכָלthe high places,בָּמוֹתlike the nationsכַּגּוֹיִםwhomאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהcarried into exileהֶגְלָהfrom before them;מִפְּנֵיהֶםand they didוַיַּעֲשׂוּevilרָעִיםthingsדְּבָרִיםto provoke YHWH to anger.לְהַכְעִיס אֶת יְהוָה
They servedוַיַּעַבְדוּthe idols,הַגִּלֻּלִיםof whichאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad saidאָמַרto them,לָהֶם“You shall notלֹאdoתַעֲשׂוּthisהַזֶּהthing.”אֶת הַדָּבָר
YHWHיְהוָהtestifiedוַיָּעַדagainst Israelבְּיִשְׂרָאֵלand against Judahוּבִיהוּדָהthroughבְּיַדallכָּלhis prophets,נְבִיאֵיeveryכָלseer,חֹזֶהsaying,לֵאמֹר“Turnשֻׁבוּfrom yourמִ כֶםevilהָרָעִיםwaysדַּרְכֵיand keepוְשִׁמְרוּmy commandments,מִצְוֺתַיmy statutes,חֻקּוֹתַיaccording to allכְּכָלthe instructionהַתּוֹרָהthatאֲשֶׁרI commandedצִוִּיתִיyour fathersאֶת אֲבֹתֵיכֶםand thatוַאֲשֶׁרI sentשָׁלַחְתִּיto youאֲלֵיכֶםthroughבְּיַדmy servantsעֲבָדַיthe prophets.”הַנְּבִיאִים
But they did notוְלֹאlisten,שָׁמֵעוּand they stiffenedוַיַּקְשׁוּtheir neckאֶת עָרְפָּםlike the neckכְּעֹרֶףof their fathers,אֲבוֹתָםwhoאֲשֶׁרdid notלֹאbelieveהֶאֱמִינוּin YHWHבַּיהוָהtheir Elohim.אֱלֹהֵיהֶם
They despisedוַיִּמְאֲסוּhis statutesאֶת חֻקָּיוand his covenantוְאֶת בְּרִיתוֹthatאֲשֶׁרhe madeכָּרַתwith their fathers,אֶת אֲבוֹתָםand his testimoniesוְאֵת עֵדְוֺתָיוthatאֲשֶׁרhe testifiedהֵעִידagainst them;בָּםand they wentוַיֵּלְכוּafterאַחֲרֵיwhat is vainהַהֶבֶלand became vain,וַיֶּהְבָּלוּand afterוְאַחֲרֵיthe nationsהַגּוֹיִםthatאֲשֶׁרwere around them,סְבִיבֹתָםabout whichאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad commanded themצִוָּה אֹתָםnotלְבִלְתִּיto doעֲשׂוֹתlike them.כָּהֶם
They abandonedוַיַּעַזְבוּallאֶת כָּלthe commandmentsמִצְוֺתof YHWHיְהוָהtheir Elohimאֱלֹהֵיהֶםand madeוַיַּעֲשׂוּfor themselvesלָהֶםa cast image,מַסֵּכָהtwoשְׁנֵיcalves;עֲגָלִיםand they madeוַיַּעֲשׂוּan Asherah,אֲשֵׁירָהand bowed downוַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּto allלְכָלthe armyצְבָאof the heavens,הַשָּׁמַיִםand servedוַיַּעַבְדוּBaal.אֶת הַבָּעַל
They madeוַיַּעֲבִירוּtheir sonsאֶת בְּנֵיהֶםand their daughtersוְאֶת בְּנוֹתֵיהֶםpass through the fire,בָּאֵשׁand practiced divinationsוַיִּקְסְמוּ קְסָמִיםand read omens,וַיְנַחֵשׁוּand sold themselvesוַיִּתְמַכְּרוּto doלַעֲשׂוֹתwhat was evilהָרַעin the eyesבְּעֵינֵיof YHWH,יְהוָהto provoke him to anger.לְהַכְעִיסוֹ
YHWHיְהוָהwas greatlyמְאֹדangeredוַיִּתְאַנַּףwith Israelבְּיִשְׂרָאֵלand removed themוַיְסִרֵםfrom beforeמֵעַלhis face;פָּנָיוnone was leftלֹא נִשְׁאַרbutרַקthe tribeשֵׁבֶטof Judahיְהוּדָהalone.לְבַדּוֹ
Judahיְהוּדָהalsoגַּםdid notלֹאkeepשָׁמַרthe commandmentsאֶת מִצְוֺתof YHWHיְהוָהtheir Elohim,אֱלֹהֵיהֶםand they walkedוַיֵּלְכוּin the statutesבְּחֻקּוֹתof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלthatאֲשֶׁרthey made.עָשׂוּ
YHWHיְהוָהdespisedוַיִּמְאַסallבְּכָלthe offspringזֶרַעof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלand afflicted themוַיְעַנֵּםand gave themוַיִּתְּנֵםinto the handבְּיַדof plunderers,שֹׁסִיםuntilעַד אֲשֶׁרhe had cast themהִשְׁלִיכָםfrom beforeמִhis face.פָּנָיו
Forכִּיhe toreקָרַעIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלfromמֵעַלthe houseבֵּיתof David,דָּוִדand they made kingוַיַּמְלִיכוּJeroboamאֶת יָרָבְעָםsonבֶּןof Nebat;נְבָטand Jeroboamוַ יָרָבְעָםdrew Israel awayיַּדַּח אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵלfrom followingמֵאַחֲרֵיYHWHיְהוָהand made them sinוְהֶחֱטֵיאָםa greatגְדוֹלָהsin.חֲטָאָה
The sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלwalkedוַיֵּלְכוּin allבְּכָלthe sinsחַטֹּאותof Jeroboamיָרָבְעָםthatאֲשֶׁרhe did;עָשָׂהthey did notלֹאturn awayסָרוּfrom it,מִמֶּנָּה
untilעַד אֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהremovedהֵסִירIsraelאֶת יִשְׂרָאֵלfrom beforeמֵעַלhis face,פָּנָיוasכַּאֲשֶׁרhe had spokenדִּבֶּרthroughבְּיַדallכָּלhis servantsעֲבָדָיוthe prophets.הַנְּבִיאִיםAnd Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלwent into exileוַיִּגֶלfromמֵעַלits landאַדְמָתוֹto Assyria,אַשּׁוּרָהto this day.עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה
The kingמֶלֶךְof Assyriaאַשּׁוּרbroughtוַיָּבֵאpeople from Babylon,מִבָּבֶלfrom Cuthah,וּמִכּוּתָהfrom Avva,וּמֵעַוָּאfrom Hamath,וּמֵחֲמָתand Sepharvaim,וּסְפַרְוַיִםand settled themוַיֹּשֶׁבin the citiesבְּעָרֵיof Samariaשֹׁמְרוֹןin placeתַּחַתof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israel;יִשְׂרָאֵלand they took possessionוַיִּרְשׁוּof Samariaאֶת שֹׁמְרוֹןand livedוַיֵּשְׁבוּin its cities.בְּעָרֶיהָ
And it happened,וַיְהִיat the beginningבִּתְחִלַּתof their livingשִׁבְתָּםthere,שָׁםthat they did notלֹאfearיָרְאוּYHWH;אֶת יְהוָהso YHWHוַ יְהוָהsentיְשַׁלַּחagainst themבָּהֶםthe lions,אֶת הָאֲרָיוֹתand they wereוַיִּהְיוּkillingהֹרְגִיםsome among them.בָּהֶם
They spokeוַיֹּאמְרוּto the kingלְמֶלֶךְof Assyria,אַשּׁוּרsaying,לֵאמֹר“The nationsהַגּוֹיִםthatאֲשֶׁרyou carried into exileהִגְלִיתָand settledוַתּוֹשֶׁבin the citiesבְּעָרֵיof Samariaשֹׁמְרוֹןdo notלֹאknowיָדְעוּthe customאֶת מִשְׁפַּטof the godאֱלֹהֵיof the land;הָאָרֶץso he has sentוַיְשַׁלַּחagainst themבָּםthe lions,אֶת הָאֲרָיוֹתand there they are,וְהִנָּםputting them to death,מְמִיתִים אוֹתָםbecauseכַּאֲשֶׁרthey do notאֵינָםknowיֹדְעִיםthe customאֶת מִשְׁפַּטof the godאֱלֹהֵיof the land.”הָאָרֶץ
The kingמֶלֶךְof Assyriaאַשּׁוּרcommanded,וַיְצַוsaying,לֵאמֹר“Takeהֹלִיכוּthereשָׁמָּהoneאֶחָדof the priestsמֵהַכֹּהֲנִיםwhomאֲשֶׁרyou carried into exileהִגְלִיתֶםfrom there,מִשָּׁםand let them goוְיֵלְכוּand liveוְיֵשְׁבוּthere,שָׁםand let him instruct themוְיֹרֵםin the customאֶת מִשְׁפַּטof the godאֱלֹהֵיof the land.”הָאָרֶץ
Oneאֶחָדof the priestsמֵהַכֹּהֲנִיםwhomאֲשֶׁרthey had carried into exileהִגְלוּfrom Samariaמִשֹּׁמְרוֹןcameוַיָּבֹאand livedוַיֵּשֶׁבin Bethel,בְּבֵית אֵלand he wasוַיְהִיinstructingמוֹרֶהthemאֹתָםhowאֵיךְthey should fearיִירְאוּYHWH.אֶת יְהוָה
But each nationגּוֹי גּוֹיwas makingוַיִּהְיוּ עֹשִׂיםits own gods,אֱלֹהָיוand they put themוַיַּנִּיחוּin the houseבְּבֵיתof the high placesהַבָּמוֹתthatאֲשֶׁרthe Samaritansהַשֹּׁמְרֹנִיםhad made,עָשׂוּeach nationגּוֹי גּוֹיin their citiesבְּעָרֵיהֶםwhereאֲשֶׁר שָׁםtheyהֵםwere living.יֹשְׁבִים
The menוְאַנְשֵׁיof BabylonבָבֶלmadeעָשׂוּSuccoth-benoth,אֶת סֻכּוֹת בְּנוֹתthe menוְאַנְשֵׁיof CuthכוּתmadeעָשׂוּNergal,אֶת נֵרְגַלand the menוְאַנְשֵׁיof HamathחֲמָתmadeעָשׂוּAshima;אֶת אֲשִׁימָא
and the AvvitesוְהָעַוִּיםmadeעָשׂוּNibhazנִבְחַזand Tartak;וְאֶת תַּרְתָּקand the Sepharvitesוְהַסְפַרְוִיםwere burningשֹׂרְפִיםtheir sonsאֶת בְּנֵיהֶםin the fireבָּאֵשׁto Adrammelechלְאַדְרַמֶּלֶךְand Anammelech,וַעֲנַמֶּלֶךְthe godsאֱלֹהֵיof Sepharvaim.סְפַרְוָיִם
They fearedוַיִּהְיוּ יְרֵאִיםYHWH,אֶת יְהוָהand they madeוַיַּעֲשׂוּfor themselvesלָהֶםfrom among all of themמִקְצוֹתָםpriestsכֹּהֲנֵיof high places,בָמוֹתwho wereוַיִּהְיוּofficiatingעֹשִׂיםfor themלָהֶםin the houseבְּבֵיתof the high places.הַבָּמוֹת
YHWHאֶת יְהוָהthey feared,הָיוּ יְרֵאִיםand their own godsוְאֶת אֱלֹהֵיהֶםthey served,הָיוּ עֹבְדִיםaccording to the customכְּמִשְׁפַּטof the nationsהַגּוֹיִםfrom whichאֲשֶׁר מִשָּׁםthey had carried them into exile.הִגְלוּ אֹתָם
To this dayעַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּהtheyהֵםdoעֹשִׂיםaccording to the former customs:כַּמִּשְׁפָּטִים הָרִאשֹׁנִיםthey do notאֵינָםfearיְרֵאִיםYHWH,אֶת יְהוָהand they do notוְאֵינָםdoעֹשִׂיםaccording to their statutesכְּחֻקֹּתָםand their rules,וּכְמִשְׁפָּטָםor according to the instructionוְכַתּוֹרָהand the commandmentוְכַמִּצְוָהthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהcommandedצִוָּהthe sonsאֶת בְּנֵיof Jacob,יַעֲקֹבwhomאֲשֶׁרhe gave the nameשָׂם שְׁמוֹIsrael.יִשְׂרָאֵל
YHWHיְהוָהmadeוַיִּכְרֹתa covenantבְּרִיתwith themאִתָּםand commanded them,וַיְצַוֵּםsaying,לֵאמֹר“You shall notלֹאfearתִירְאוּotherאֲחֵרִיםgods,אֱלֹהִיםand you shall notוְלֹאbow downתִשְׁתַּחֲווּto them,לָהֶםand you shall notוְלֹאserve them,תַעַבְדוּםand you shall notוְלֹאsacrificeתִזְבְּחוּto them;לָהֶם
butכִּי אִםYHWH,אֶת יְהוָהwhoאֲשֶׁרbrought you upהֶעֱלָה אֶתְכֶםfrom the landמֵאֶרֶץof Egyptמִצְרַיִםwith greatבְּ גָּדוֹלpowerכֹחַand with an outstretchedוּבִ נְטוּיָהarm,זְרוֹעַhimאֹתוֹyou shall fear,תִירָאוּand to himוְלוֹyou shall bow down,תִשְׁתַּחֲווּand to himוְלוֹyou shall sacrifice.תִזְבָּחוּ
The statutesוְאֶת הַחֻקִּיםand the rulesוְאֶת הַמִּשְׁפָּטִיםand the instructionוְהַתּוֹרָהand the commandmentוְהַמִּצְוָהthatאֲשֶׁרhe wroteכָּתַבfor youלָכֶםyou shall be carefulתִּשְׁמְרוּןto doלַעֲשׂוֹתallכָּלthe days;הַיָּמִיםand you shall notוְלֹאfearתִירְאוּotherאֲחֵרִיםgods.אֱלֹהִים
The covenantוְהַבְּרִיתthatאֲשֶׁרI have madeכָּרַתִּיwith youאִתְּכֶםyou shall notלֹאforget,תִשְׁכָּחוּand you shall notוְלֹאfearתִירְאוּotherאֲחֵרִיםgods;אֱלֹהִים
butכִּי אִםYHWHאֶת יְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֵיכֶםyou shall fear,תִּירָאוּand heוְהוּאwill deliverיַצִּילyouאֶתְכֶםfrom the handמִיַּדof allכָּלyour enemies.”אֹיְבֵיכֶם
But they did notוְלֹאlisten,שָׁמֵעוּbutכִּי אִםaccording to their former customכְּמִשְׁפָּטָם הָרִאשׁוֹןtheyהֵםdo.עֹשִׂים
These nationsהַגּוֹיִם הָאֵלֶּהfearedוַיִּהְיוּ יְרֵאִיםYHWH,אֶת יְהוָהand their carved imagesוְאֶת פְּסִילֵיהֶםthey served;הָיוּ עֹבְדִיםalsoגַּםtheir sonsבְּנֵיהֶםand the sonsוּבְנֵיof their sons:בְנֵיהֶםasכַּאֲשֶׁרtheir fathersאֲבֹתָםdid,עָשׂוּtheyהֵםdoעֹשִׂיםto this day.עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה
