Now at that timeוְאָזthe armyחֵילof the kingמֶלֶךְof Babylonבָּבֶלwas besiegingצָרִיםJerusalem,עַל יְרוּשָׁלִָםand Jeremiahוְיִרְמְיָהוּthe prophetהַנָּבִיאwasהָיָהshut upכָלוּאin the courtבַּחֲצַרof the guard,הַמַּטָּרָהwhich was inאֲשֶׁרthe houseבֵּיתof the kingמֶלֶךְof Judah,יְהוּדָה
whereאֲשֶׁרZedekiahצִדְקִיָּהוּkingמֶלֶךְof Judahיְהוּדָהhad shut him up,כְּלָאוֹsaying,לֵאמֹר“Whyמַדּוּעַdo youאַתָּהprophesy,נִבָּאsaying,לֵאמֹר‘ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWH:יְהוָהLook, I amהִנְנִיgivingנֹתֵןthis cityאֶת הָעִיר הַזֹּאתinto the handבְּיַדof the kingמֶלֶךְof Babylon,בָּבֶלand he will capture it;וּלְכָדָהּ
and Zedekiahוְצִדְקִיָּהוּkingמֶלֶךְof Judahיְהוּדָהwill notלֹאescapeיִמָּלֵטfrom the handמִיַּדof the Chaldeans,הַכַּשְׂדִּיםbutכִּיhe will surely be givenהִנָּתֹן יִנָּתֵןinto the handבְּיַדof the kingמֶלֶךְof Babylon,בָּבֶלand his mouthפִּיוwill speakוְדִבֶּרwith his mouth,עִם פִּיוand his eyesוְעֵינָיוwill seeתִּרְאֶינָהhis eyes;אֶת עֵינָיו
and to Babylonוּבָבֶלhe will takeיוֹלִךְZedekiah,אֶת צִדְקִיָּהוּand thereוְשָׁםhe will remainיִהְיֶהuntilעַדI visit him,פָּקְדִי אֹתוֹdeclaresנְאֻםYHWH;יְהוָהthoughכִּיyou fightתִלָּחֲמוּagainst the Chaldeans,אֶת הַכַּשְׂדִּיםyou will notלֹאsucceed’?”תַצְלִיחוּ
And Jeremiahוַ יִרְמְיָהוּsaid,יֹּאמֶר“The wordדְּבַרof YHWHיְהוָהcameהָיָהto me,אֵלַיsaying,לֵאמֹר
‘Look,הִנֵּהHanamelחֲנַמְאֵלsonבֶּןof Shallumשַׁלֻּםyour uncleדֹּדְךָis comingבָּאto you,אֵלֶיךָsaying,לֵאמֹר“Buyקְנֵהfor yourselfלְךָmy fieldאֶת שָׂדִיthat isאֲשֶׁרin Anathoth,בַּעֲנָתוֹתforכִּיthe rightמִשְׁפַּטof redemptionהַגְּאֻלָּהto buy itלִקְנוֹתis yours.”’לְךָ
And Hanamelחֲנַמְאֵלmy uncle'sדֹּדִיsonבֶּןcameוַיָּבֹאto meאֵלַיaccording to the wordכִּדְבַרof YHWHיְהוָהto the courtאֶל חֲצַרof the guard,הַמַּטָּרָהand said to me,וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלַי‘Buy,קְנֵהplease,נָאmy fieldאֶת שָׂדִיthat isאֲשֶׁרin Anathoth,בַּעֲנָתוֹתwhich isאֲשֶׁרin the landבְּאֶרֶץof Benjamin,בִּנְיָמִיןforכִּיthe rightמִשְׁפַּטof possessionהַיְרֻשָּׁהis yours,לְךָand the redemption is yours;וּלְךָ הַגְּאֻלָּהbuy itקְנֵהfor yourself.’לָךְThen I knewוָאֵדַעthatכִּיit wasהוּאthe wordדְבַרof YHWH.יְהוָה
And I boughtוָאֶקְנֶהthe fieldאֶת הַשָּׂדֶהfrom Hanamelמֵאֵת חֲנַמְאֵלmy uncle'sדֹּדִיsonבֶּןthat wasאֲשֶׁרin Anathoth,בַּעֲנָתוֹתand I weighed outוָאֶשְׁקֲלָהto himלּוֹthe silver,אֶת הַכֶּסֶףseventeenשִׁבְעָה וַעֲשָׂרָהshekelsשְׁקָלִיםof silver.הַכָּסֶף
AndוָI wrote itאֶכְתֹּבin the deedבַּסֵּפֶרandוָsealed it,אֶחְתֹּםand hadוָwitnessesעֵדִיםtestify,אָעֵדand weighedוָאֶשְׁקֹלthe silverהַכֶּסֶףon the scales.בְּמֹאזְנָיִם
And I tookוָאֶקַּחthe deedאֶת סֵפֶרof purchase,הַמִּקְנָהthe sealed one,אֶת הֶחָתוּםthe termsהַמִּצְוָהand the statutes,וְהַחֻקִּיםand the open one;וְאֶת הַגָּלוּי
and I gaveוָאֶתֵּןthe deedאֶת הַסֵּפֶרof purchaseהַמִּקְנָהto Baruchאֶל בָּרוּךְsonבֶּןof Neriah,נֵרִיָּהsonבֶּןof Mahseiah,מַחְסֵיָהbefore the eyesלְעֵינֵיof Hanamelחֲנַמְאֵלmy uncle,דֹּדִיand before the eyesוּלְעֵינֵיof the witnessesהָעֵדִיםwho had writtenהַכֹּתְבִיםin the deedבְּסֵפֶרof purchase,הַמִּקְנָהbefore the eyesלְעֵינֵיof allכָּלthe Jewsהַיְּהוּדִיםwho were sittingהַיֹּשְׁבִיםin the courtבַּחֲצַרof the guard.הַמַּטָּרָה
And I commandedוָאֲצַוֶּהBaruchאֶת בָּרוּךְbefore their eyes,לְעֵינֵיהֶםsaying,לֵאמֹר
‘ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWHיְהוָהTsevaot,צְבָאוֹתthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel:יִשְׂרָאֵלTakeלָקוֹחַthese deeds,אֶת הַסְּפָרִים הָאֵלֶּהthis deedאֵת סֵפֶר הַזֶּהof purchase,הַמִּקְנָהthe sealed one,וְאֵת הֶחָתוּםand this openוְאֵת הַגָּלוּי הַזֶּהdeed,סֵפֶרand put themוּנְתַתָּםin a vesselבִּכְלִיof clay,חָרֶשׂso thatלְמַעַןthey may lastיַעַמְדוּmany days.יָמִים רַבִּים
ForכִּיthusכֹהsaysאָמַרYHWHיְהוָהTsevaot,צְבָאוֹתthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel:יִשְׂרָאֵלHousesבָתִּיםand fieldsוְשָׂדוֹתand vineyardsוּכְרָמִיםwill againעוֹדbe boughtיִקָּנוּin this land.’בָּאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת
And I prayedוָאֶתְפַּלֵּלto YHWH,אֶל יְהוָהafter I had givenאַחֲרֵי תִתִּיthe deedאֶת סֵפֶר הַof purchaseמִּקְנָהto Baruchאֶל בָּרוּךְsonבֶּןof Neriah,נֵרִיָּהsaying,לֵאמֹר
‘Ah,אֲהָהּAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH!יְהוִהLook,הִנֵּהyouאַתָּהmadeעָשִׂיתָthe heavensאֶת הַשָּׁמַיִםand the earthוְאֶת הָאָרֶץby your greatבְּ ךָ הַגָּדוֹלpowerכֹחֲand by your outstretchedוּבִ ךָ הַנְּטוּיָהarm;זְרֹעֲnothingלֹא כָּל דָּבָרis too difficultיִפָּלֵאfor you.מִמְּךָ
You showעֹשֶׂהloyal loveחֶסֶדto thousands,לַאֲלָפִיםand repayוּמְשַׁלֵּםthe iniquityעֲוֺןof the fathersאָבוֹתinto the bosomאֶל חֵיקof their childrenבְּנֵיהֶםafter them,אַחֲרֵיהֶםthe great,הַגָּדוֹלmightyהַגִּבּוֹרEl,הָאֵלYHWHיְהוָהTsevaot isצְבָאוֹתhis name,שְׁמוֹ
greatגְּדֹלin counselהָעֵצָהand mightyוְרַבin deed,הָעֲלִילִיָּהwhoseאֲשֶׁרeyesעֵינֶיךָare openפְקֻחוֹתon allעַל כָּלthe waysדַּרְכֵיof the childrenבְּנֵיof humankind,אָדָםto giveלָתֵתto each oneלְאִישׁaccording to his waysכִּדְרָכָיוand according to the fruitוְכִפְרִיof his deeds;מַעֲלָלָיו
whoאֲשֶׁרsetשַׂמְתָּsignsאֹתוֹתand wondersוּמֹפְתִיםin the landבְּאֶרֶץof Egyptמִצְרַיִםto this day,עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּהboth in Israelוּבְיִשְׂרָאֵלand among humankind,וּבָאָדָםand madeוַתַּעֲשֶׂהfor yourselfלְּךָa name,שֵׁםasכַּat this day.יּוֹם הַזֶּה
And you broughtוַתֹּצֵאyour peopleאֶת עַמְּךָIsraelאֶת יִשְׂרָאֵלout of the landמֵאֶרֶץof Egyptמִצְרָיִםwith signsבְּאֹתוֹתand with wonders,וּבְמוֹפְתִיםand with a strongוּבְ חֲזָקָהhandיָדand with an outstretchedוּבְ נְטוּיָהarm,אֶזְרוֹעַand with greatוּבְ גָּדוֹלterror;מוֹרָא
and you gaveוַתִּתֵּןthemלָהֶםthis landאֶת הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאתthatאֲשֶׁרyou sworeנִשְׁבַּעְתָּto their fathersלַאֲבוֹתָםto giveלָתֵתthem,לָהֶםa landאֶרֶץflowingזָבַתwith milkחָלָבand honey.וּדְבָשׁ
And they came inוַיָּבֹאוּand possessed it,וַיִּרְשׁוּ אֹתָהּbut they did notוְלֹאlistenשָׁמְעוּto your voice,בְקוֹלֶךָnorוּ לֹאwalkהָלָכוּin your instruction;בְתוֹרָתְךָallאֵת כָּלthatאֲשֶׁרyou commandedצִוִּיתָהthemלָהֶםto doלַעֲשׂוֹתthey did notלֹאdo;עָשׂוּand you have madeוַתַּקְרֵאallאֵת כָּלthis evilהָרָעָה הַזֹּאתcome uponתַּקְרֵאthem.אֹתָם
Look,הִנֵּהthe siege rampsהַסֹּלְלוֹתhave comeבָּאוּto the cityהָעִירto capture it,לְלָכְדָהּand the cityוְהָעִירhas been givenנִתְּנָהinto the handבְּיַדof the Chaldeansהַכַּשְׂדִּיםwho are fightingהַנִּלְחָמִיםagainst it,עָלֶיהָbecause ofמִפְּנֵיthe swordהַחֶרֶבand the famineוְהָרָעָבand the pestilence;וְהַדָּבֶרand whatוַאֲשֶׁרyou have spokenדִּבַּרְתָּhas happened,הָיָהand look,וְהִנְּyouךָsee it.רֹאֶה
Yet youוְאַתָּהhave saidאָמַרְתָּto me,אֵלַיAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH,יְהוִה“Buyקְנֵהfor yourselfלְךָthe fieldהַשָּׂדֶהwith silver,בַּכֶּסֶףand haveוְwitnessesעֵדִיםtestify,”הָעֵדthough the cityוְהָעִירhas been givenנִתְּנָהinto the handבְּיַדof the Chaldeans.’”הַכַּשְׂדִּים
And the wordוַיְהִי דְּבַרof YHWHיְהוָהcame to Jeremiah,אֶל יִרְמְיָהוּsaying,לֵאמֹר
“Look,הִנֵּהI amאֲנִיYHWH,יְהוָהthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof allכָּלflesh;בָּשָׂרisהֲanythingכָּל דָּבָרtoo difficultיִפָּלֵאfor me?מִמֶּנִּי
ThereforeלָכֵןthusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWH:יְהוָהLook, I amהִנְנִיgivingנֹתֵןthis cityאֶת הָעִיר הַזֹּאתinto the handבְּיַדof the Chaldeansהַכַּשְׂדִּיםand into the handוּבְיַדof Nebuchadnezzarנְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּרkingמֶלֶךְof Babylon,בָּבֶלand he will capture it.וּלְכָדָהּ
And the Chaldeansוּ הַכַּשְׂדִּיםwho are fightingהַנִּלְחָמִיםagainst this cityעַל הָעִיר הַזֹּאתwill comeבָאוּand setוְהִצִּיתוּthis cityאֶת הָעִיר הַזֹּאתon fireבָּאֵשׁand burn it,וּשְׂרָפוּהָalong with the housesוְאֵת הַבָּתִּיםon whoseאֲשֶׁר עַלroofsגַּגּוֹתֵיהֶםthey burned incenseקִטְּרוּto Baalלַבַּעַלand poured outוְהִסִּכוּlibationsנְסָכִיםto otherלֵ אֲחֵרִיםgods,אלֹהִיםto provoke me.לְמַעַן הַכְעִסֵנִי
Forכִּיthe sonsבְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלand the sonsוּבְנֵיof Judahיְהוּדָהhave doneהָיוּ עֹשִׂיםnothing butאַךְevilהָרַעin my eyesבְּעֵינַיfrom their youth;מִנְּעֻרֹתֵיהֶםforכִּיthe sonsבְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלhave done nothing butאַךְprovoke meמַכְעִסִים אֹתִיwith the workבְּמַעֲשֵׂהof their hands,יְדֵיהֶםdeclaresנְאֻםYHWH.יְהוָה
Forכִּיto my angerעַל אַפִּיand to my furyוְעַל חֲמָתִיthis cityהָעִיר הַזֹּאתhas beenהָיְתָהto me,לִּיfrom the dayלְמִן הַיּוֹםthatאֲשֶׁרthey built itבָּנוּ אוֹתָהּuntil this day,וְעַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּהso that I must remove itלַהֲסִירָהּfrom before my face,מֵעַל פָּנָי
because of allעַל כָּלthe evilרָעַתof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלand of the sonsוּבְנֵיof Judahיְהוּדָהthatאֲשֶׁרthey have doneעָשׂוּto provoke me,לְהַכְעִסֵנִיthey,הֵמָּהtheir kings,מַלְכֵיהֶםtheir princes,שָׂרֵיהֶםtheir priests,כֹּהֲנֵיהֶםand their prophets,וּנְבִיאֵיהֶםand the menוְאִישׁof Judahיְהוּדָהand the inhabitantsוְיֹשְׁבֵיof Jerusalem.יְרוּשָׁלִָם
And they have turnedוַיִּפְנוּto meאֵלַיthe backעֹרֶףand notוְלֹאthe face;פָנִיםthough I taughtוְלַמֵּדthem,אֹתָםrising earlyהַשְׁכֵּםand teaching,וְלַמֵּדthey were notוְאֵינָםlisteningשֹׁמְעִיםto receiveלָקַחַתcorrection.מוּסָר
And they setוַיָּשִׂימוּtheir detestable thingsשִׁקּוּצֵיהֶםin the houseבַּבַּיִתover whichאֲשֶׁר עָלָיוmy nameשְׁמִיis called,נִקְרָאto defile it.לְטַמְּאוֹ
And they builtוַיִּבְנוּthe high placesאֶת בָּמוֹתof Baalהַבַּעַלthat areאֲשֶׁרin the valleyבְּגֵיאof Ben-hinnom,בֶן הִנֹּםto makeלְהַעֲבִירtheir sonsאֶת בְּנֵיהֶםand their daughtersוְאֶת בְּנוֹתֵיהֶםpass throughהַעֲבִירto Molech,לַמֹּלֶךְwhichאֲשֶׁרI did notלֹאcommand them,צִוִּיתִיםand it did notוְלֹאcomeעָלְתָהinto my heartעַל לִבִּיthat they should doלַעֲשׂוֹתthis abomination,הַתּוֹעֵבָה הַזֹּאתso as to makeלְמַעַן הַחֲטִיאJudahאֶת יְהוּדָהsin.הַחֲטִיא
And now,וְעַתָּהtherefore,לָכֵןthusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWH,יְהוָהthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלconcerning this cityאֶל הָעִיר הַזֹּאתof whichאֲשֶׁרyouאַתֶּםare saying,אֹמְרִים‘It has been givenנִתְּנָהinto the handבְּיַדof the kingמֶלֶךְof Babylonבָּבֶלby the swordבַּחֶרֶבand by the famineוּבָרָעָבand by the pestilence’:וּבַדָּבֶר
Look, I amהִנְנִיgathering themמְקַבְּצָםfrom allמִכָּלthe landsהָאֲרָצוֹתwhereאֲשֶׁר שָׁםI have driven themהִדַּחְתִּיםin my angerבְּאַפִּיand in my furyוּבַחֲמָתִיand in greatוּבְ גָּדוֹלwrath;קֶצֶףand I will bring them backוַהֲשִׁבֹתִיםto this place,אֶל הַמָּקוֹם הַזֶּהand I will make them liveוְהֹשַׁבְתִּיםin safety.לָבֶטַח
And they will beוְהָיוּto meלִיa people,לְעָםand Iוַאֲנִיwill beאֶהְיֶהto themלָהֶםElohim.לֵאלֹהִים
And I will giveוְנָתַתִּיthemלָהֶםoneאֶחָדheartלֵבand oneוְ אֶחָדway,דֶרֶךְto fearלְיִרְאָהmeאוֹתִיall the days,כָּל הַיָּמִיםfor the goodלְטוֹבof themלָהֶםand of their childrenוְלִבְנֵיהֶםafter them.אַחֲרֵיהֶם
And I will makeוְכָרַתִּיwith themלָהֶםan eternalעוֹלָםcovenant,בְּרִיתthatאֲשֶׁרI will notלֹאturn awayאָשׁוּבfromמֵfollowing after themאַחֲרֵיהֶםto do them good;לְהֵיטִיבִי אוֹתָםand the fear of meוְאֶת יִרְאָתִיI will putאֶתֵּןin their heart,בִּלְבָבָםso that they do notלְבִלְתִּיturn awayסוּרfrom me.מֵעָלָי
And I will rejoiceוְשַׂשְׂתִּיover themעֲלֵיהֶםto do them good,לְהֵטִיב אוֹתָםand I will plant themוּנְטַעְתִּיםin this landבָּאָרֶץ הַזֹּאתin faithfulness,בֶּאֱמֶתwith allבְּכָלmy heartלִבִּיand with allוּבְכָלmy soul.נַפְשִׁי
ForכִּיthusכֹהsaysאָמַרYHWH:יְהוָהJust asכַּאֲשֶׁרI have broughtהֵבֵאתִיon this peopleאֶל הָעָם הַזֶּהallאֵת כָּלthis greatהַגְּדוֹלָה הַזֹּאתevil,הָרָעָהsoכֵּןIאָנֹכִיam bringingמֵבִיאon themעֲלֵיהֶםallאֶת כָּלthe goodהַטּוֹבָהthatאֲשֶׁרIאָנֹכִיam speakingדֹּבֵרconcerning them.עֲלֵיהֶם
And the fieldוְ הַשָּׂדֶהwill be boughtנִקְנָהin this landבָּאָרֶץ הַזֹּאתof whichאֲשֶׁרyouאַתֶּםare saying,אֹמְרִים‘Itהִיאis a desolation,שְׁמָמָהwithoutמֵאֵיןhuman beingאָדָםor livestock;וּבְהֵמָהit has been givenנִתְּנָהinto the handבְּיַדof the Chaldeans.’הַכַּשְׂדִּים
Fieldsשָׂדוֹתthey will buyיִקְנוּwith silver,בַּכֶּסֶףand writeוְכָתוֹבin deeds,בַּסֵּפֶרandוְseal them,חָתוֹםand haveוְwitnessesעֵדִיםtestify,הָעֵדin the landבְּאֶרֶץof Benjamin,בִּנְיָמִןand in the surroundingsוּבִסְבִיבֵיof Jerusalem,יְרוּשָׁלִַםand in the citiesוּבְעָרֵיof Judah,יְהוּדָהand in the citiesוּבְעָרֵיof the hill country,הָהָרand in the citiesוּבְעָרֵיof the Shephelah,הַשְּׁפֵלָהand in the citiesוּבְעָרֵיof the Negev;הַנֶּגֶבforכִּיI will bring backאָשִׁיבtheir captivity,אֶת שְׁבוּתָםdeclaresנְאֻםYHWH.”יְהוָה
