And it came about,וַיְהִיwhenכִAdoni-zedekאֲדֹנִי צֶדֶקkingמֶלֶךְof JerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַםheardשְׁמֹעַthatכִּיJoshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַhad takenלָכַדAiאֶת הָעַיand devoted it to destructionוַיַּחֲרִימָהּ—asכַּאֲשֶׁרhe had doneעָשָׂהto Jerichoלִירִיחוֹand its king,וּלְמַלְכָּהּsoכֵּןhe had doneעָשָׂהto Aiלָעַיand its king—וּלְמַלְכָּהּand thatוְכִיthe inhabitantsיֹשְׁבֵיof Gibeonגִבְעוֹןhad made peaceהִשְׁלִימוּwith Israelאֶת יִשְׂרָאֵלand wereוַיִּהְיוּamong them,בְּקִרְבָּם
they fearedוַיִּירְאוּgreatly,מְאֹדbecauseכִּיGibeonגִּבְעוֹןwas a greatגְּדוֹלָהcity,עִירlike oneכְּאַחַתof the citiesעָרֵיof the kingdom,הַמַּמְלָכָהand becauseוְכִיitהִיאwas greaterגְדוֹלָהthanמִןAi,הָעַיand allוְכָלits menאֲנָשֶׁיהָwere mighty men.גִּבֹּרִים
So Adoni-zedekאֲדֹנִי צֶדֶקkingמֶלֶךְof JerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַםsentוַיִּשְׁלַחtoאֶלHohamהוֹהָםkingמֶלֶךְof Hebron,חֶבְרוֹןtoוְאֶלPiramפִּרְאָםkingמֶלֶךְof Jarmuth,יַרְמוּתtoוְאֶלJaphiaיָפִיעַkingמֶלֶךְof Lachish,לָכִישׁand toוְאֶלDebirדְּבִירkingמֶלֶךְof Eglon,עֶגְלוֹןsaying,לֵאמֹר
“Come upעֲלוּto meאֵלַיand help me,וְעִזְרֻנִיand let us strikeוְנַכֶּהGibeon,אֶת גִּבְעוֹןforכִּיit has made peaceהִשְׁלִימָהwith Joshuaאֶת יְהוֹשֻׁעַand with the sonsוְאֶת בְּנֵיof Israel.”יִשְׂרָאֵל
So they gatheredוַיֵּאָסְפוּand went up,וַיַּעֲלוּthe fiveחֲמֵשֶׁתkingsמַלְכֵיof the Amorite,הָאֱמֹרִיthe kingמֶלֶךְof Jerusalem,יְרוּשָׁלִַםthe kingמֶלֶךְof Hebron,חֶבְרוֹןthe kingמֶלֶךְof Jarmuth,יַרְמוּתthe kingמֶלֶךְof Lachish,לָכִישׁthe kingמֶלֶךְof Eglon,עֶגְלוֹןtheyהֵםand allוְכָלtheir camps,מַחֲנֵיהֶםand campedוַיַּחֲנוּagainstעַלGibeonגִּבְעוֹןand foughtוַיִּלָּחֲמוּagainst it.עָלֶיהָ
The menאַנְשֵׁיof GibeonגִבְעוֹןsentוַיִּשְׁלְחוּtoאֶלJoshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַatאֶלthe campהַמַּחֲנֶהat Gilgal,הַגִּלְגָּלָהsaying,לֵאמֹר“Do notאַלletתֶּרֶףyour handsיָדֶיךָgoתֶּרֶףfrom your servants.מֵעֲבָדֶיךָCome upעֲלֵהto usאֵלֵינוּquickly,מְהֵרָהsaveוְהוֹשִׁיעָהus,לָּנוּand help us,וְעָזְרֵנוּforכִּיallכָּלthe kingsמַלְכֵיof the Amoriteהָאֱמֹרִיwho liveיֹשְׁבֵיin the hill countryהָהָרhave gatheredנִקְבְּצוּagainst us.”אֵלֵינוּ
So Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַwent upוַיַּעַלfromמִןGilgal,הַגִּלְגָּלheהוּאand allוְכָלthe peopleעַםof warהַמִּלְחָמָהwith him,עִמּוֹand allוְכֹלthe mightyגִּבּוֹרֵיwarriors.הֶחָיִל
And YHWHוַ יְהוָהsaidיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלJoshua,יְהוֹשֻׁעַ“Do notאַלfear them,תִּירָא מֵהֶםforכִּיinto your handבְיָדְךָI have given them;נְתַתִּיםnotלֹאa manאִישׁof themמֵהֶםshall standיַעֲמֹדbefore you.”בְּפָנֶיךָ
So Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַcameוַיָּבֹאupon themאֲלֵיהֶםsuddenly;פִּתְאֹםallכָּלnightהַלַּיְלָהhe had gone upעָלָהfromמִןGilgal.הַגִּלְגָּל
And YHWHיְהוָהthrew them into confusionוַיְהֻמֵּםbeforeלִפְנֵיIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלand he struck themוַיַּכֵּםwith a greatגְדוֹלָהblowמַכָּהat Gibeonבְּגִבְעוֹןand pursued themוַיִּרְדְּפֵםby the wayדֶּרֶךְof the ascentמַעֲלֵהof Beth-horonבֵית חוֹרֹןand struck themוַיַּכֵּםas far asעַדAzekahעֲזֵקָהand as far asוְעַדMakkedah.מַקֵּדָה
And it came about,וַיְהִיas they fledבְּנֻסָםbeforeמִפְּנֵיIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלwhile they wereהֵםon the descentבְּמוֹרַדof Beth-horon,בֵּית חוֹרֹןthat YHWHוַיהוָהthrew downהִשְׁלִיךְon themעֲלֵיהֶםgreatגְּדֹלוֹתstonesאֲבָנִיםfromמִןthe heavensהַשָּׁמַיִםas far asעַדAzekah,עֲזֵקָהand they died.וַיָּמֻתוּMore wereרַבִּיםthose whoאֲשֶׁרdiedמֵתוּby the hailstonesבְּאַבְנֵי הַבָּרָדthan those whomמֵאֲשֶׁרthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלkilledהָרְגוּwith the sword.בֶּחָרֶב
ThenאָזJoshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַspokeיְדַבֵּרto YHWHלַיהוָהon the dayבְּיוֹםwhen YHWHיְהוָהgave upתֵּתthe Amoriteאֶת הָאֱמֹרִיbeforeלִפְנֵיthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלand he saidוַיֹּאמֶרin the sightלְעֵינֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵל“Sun,שֶׁמֶשׁstand stillדּוֹםat Gibeon,בְּגִבְעוֹןand moon,וְיָרֵחַin the valleyבְּעֵמֶקof Aijalon.”אַיָּלוֹן
And the sunוַ הַשֶּׁמֶשׁstood still,יִּדֹּםand the moonוְיָרֵחַstopped,עָמָדuntilעַדthe nationגּוֹיtook vengeanceיִקֹּםon its enemies.אֹיְבָיוIsהֲitהִיאnotלֹאwrittenכְתוּבָהinעַלthe bookסֵפֶרof the Upright?הַיָּשָׁרThe sunהַשֶּׁמֶשׁstoppedוַיַּעֲמֹדin the middleבַּחֲצִיof the heavensהַשָּׁמַיִםand did notוְלֹאhurryאָץto go downלָבוֹאfor about a wholeכְּ תָּמִיםday.יוֹם
There wasהָיָהnoוְלֹאday like thatכַּיּוֹם הַהוּאbefore itלְפָנָיוor after it,וְאַחֲרָיוwhen YHWHיְהוָהlistenedלִשְׁמֹעַto the voiceבְּקוֹלof a man,אִישׁforכִּיYHWHיְהוָהfoughtנִלְחָםfor Israel.לְיִשְׂרָאֵל
Then Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַreturned,וַיָּשָׁבand allוְכָלIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלwith him,עִמּוֹtoאֶלthe campהַמַּחֲנֶהat Gilgal.הַגִּלְגָּלָה
Now theseהָאֵלֶּהfiveחֲמֵשֶׁתkingsהַמְּלָכִיםfledוַיָּנֻסוּand hidוַיֵּחָבְאוּin the caveבַמְּעָרָהat Makkedah.בְּמַקֵּדָה
And it was toldוַיֻּגַּדJoshua,לִיהוֹשֻׁעַsaying,לֵאמֹר“The fiveחֲמֵשֶׁתkingsהַמְּלָכִיםhave been foundנִמְצְאוּhiddenנֶחְבְּאִיםin the caveבַּמְּעָרָהat Makkedah.”בְּמַקֵּדָה
Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“Rollגֹּלּוּgreatגְּדֹלוֹתstonesאֲבָנִיםtoאֶלthe mouthפִּיof the caveהַמְּעָרָהand appointוְהַפְקִידוּmenאֲנָשִׁיםby itעָלֶיהָto guard them.לְשָׁמְרָם
But youוְאַתֶּםdo notאַלstop;תַּעֲמֹדוּpursueרִדְפוּ אַחֲרֵיyour enemiesאֹיְבֵיכֶםand cut off their rear guard.וְזִנַּבְתֶּם אוֹתָםDo notאַלlet themתִּתְּנוּםenterלָבוֹאintoאֶלtheir cities,עָרֵיהֶםforכִּיYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֵיכֶםhas given themנְתָנָםinto your hand.”בְּיֶדְכֶם
And it came about,וַיְהִיwhenכְּJoshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַand the sonsוּבְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלhad finishedכַלּוֹתstriking themלְהַכּוֹתָםwith a veryמְאֹדgreatגְדוֹלָהblow,מַכָּהuntilעַדthey were finished,תֻּמָּםand the survivorsוְהַשְּׂרִידִיםwho survivedשָׂרְדוּof themמֵהֶםhad enteredוַיָּבֹאוּintoאֶלthe fortifiedהַמִּבְצָרcities,עָרֵי
that allכָלthe peopleהָעָםreturnedוַיָּשֻׁבוּtoאֶלthe camp,הַמַּחֲנֶהtoאֶלJoshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַat Makkedah,מַקֵּדָהin peace.בְּשָׁלוֹםNo oneלֹא לְאִישׁmovedחָרַץhis tongueאֶת לְשֹׁנוֹagainst the sonsלִבְנֵיof Israel.יִשְׂרָאֵל
Then Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“Openפִּתְחוּthe mouthאֶת פִּיof the caveהַמְּעָרָהand bring outוְהוֹצִיאוּto meאֵלַיtheseאֶת הָאֵלֶּהfiveחֲמֵשֶׁתkingsהַמְּלָכִיםfromמִןthe cave.”הַמְּעָרָה
They didוַיַּעֲשׂוּsoכֵןand brought outוַיֹּצִיאוּto himאֵלָיוtheseאֶת הָאֵלֶּהfiveחֲמֵשֶׁתkingsהַמְּלָכִיםfromמִןthe cave:הַמְּעָרָהthe kingאֵת מֶלֶךְof Jerusalem,יְרוּשָׁלִַםthe kingאֶת מֶלֶךְof Hebron,חֶבְרוֹןthe kingאֶת מֶלֶךְof Jarmuth,יַרְמוּתthe kingאֶת מֶלֶךְof Lachish,לָכִישׁthe kingאֶת מֶלֶךְof Eglon.עֶגְלוֹן
And it came about,וַיְהִיwhenכְּthey broughtהוֹצִיאָםtheseאֶת הָאֵלֶּהkingsהַמְּלָכִיםout toאֶלJoshua,יְהוֹשֻׁעַthat Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַcalledוַיִּקְרָאtoאֶלallכָּלthe menאִישׁof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלand saidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלthe commandersקְצִינֵיof the menאַנְשֵׁיof warהַמִּלְחָמָהwho had goneהֶהָלְכוּאwith him,אִתּוֹ“Come near,קִרְבוּputשִׂימוּyour feetאֶת רַגְלֵיכֶםonעַלthe necksצַוְּארֵיof theseהָאֵלֶּהkings.”הַמְּלָכִיםSo they came nearוַיִּקְרְבוּand putוַיָּשִׂימוּtheir feetאֶת רַגְלֵיהֶםonעַלtheir necks.צַוְּארֵיהֶם
And Joshuaוַ יְהוֹשֻׁעַsaidיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵיהֶם“Do notאַלfearתִּירְאוּorוְאַלbe dismayed;תֵּחָתּוּbe strongחִזְקוּand firm,וְאִמְצוּforכִּיthusכָכָהYHWHיְהוָהwill doיַעֲשֶׂהto allלְכָלyour enemiesאֹיְבֵיכֶםagainst whomאֲשֶׁר אוֹתָםyouאַתֶּםfight.”נִלְחָמִים
Afterwardאַחֲרֵי כֵןJoshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַstruck themוַיַּכֵּםand put them to deathוַיְמִיתֵםand hanged themוַיִּתְלֵםonעַלfiveחֲמִשָּׁהtrees,עֵצִיםand they wereוַיִּהְיוּhangingתְּלוּיִםonעַלthe treesהָעֵצִיםuntilעַדevening.הָעָרֶב
And it came about,וַיְהִיat the timeלְעֵתof the going downבּוֹאof the sun,הַשֶּׁמֶשׁthat Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַgave command,צִוָּהand they took them downוַיֹּרִידוּםfromמֵעַלthe treesהָעֵצִיםand threw themוַיַּשְׁלִכֻםintoאֶלthe caveהַמְּעָרָהwhereאֲשֶׁר שָׁםthey had hidden,נֶחְבְּאוּand they putוַיָּשִׂמוּgreatגְּדֹלוֹתstonesאֲבָנִיםonעַלthe mouthפִּיof the cave,הַמְּעָרָהwhich are there untilעַדthis veryעֶצֶם הַזֶּהday.הַיּוֹם
And Makkedahוְאֶת מַקֵּדָהJoshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַtookלָכַדon thatבַּ הַהוּאdayיּוֹםand struck itוַיַּכֶּהָwith the edgeלְפִיof the sword,חֶרֶבand its king;וְאֶת מַלְכָּהּhe devoted to destructionהֶחֱרִםthemאוֹתָםand everyוְאֶת כָּלpersonהַנֶּפֶשׁwhoאֲשֶׁרwas in it;בָּהּhe leftהִשְׁאִירnoלֹאsurvivor.שָׂרִידAnd he didוַיַּעַשׂto the kingלְמֶלֶךְof Makkedahמַקֵּדָהasכַּאֲשֶׁרhe had doneעָשָׂהto the kingלְמֶלֶךְof Jericho.יְרִיחוֹ

And YHWHוַ יְהוָהgaveיִּתֵּןitאוֹתָהּalso,גַּםand its king,וְאֶת מַלְכָּהּinto the handבְּיַדof Israel;יִשְׂרָאֵלand he struck itוַיַּכֶּהָwith the edgeלְפִיof the sword,חֶרֶבand everyוְאֶת כָּלpersonהַנֶּפֶשׁwhoאֲשֶׁרwas in it;בָּהּhe leftהִשְׁאִירnoלֹאsurvivorשָׂרִידin it.בָּהּAnd he didוַיַּעַשׂto its kingלְמַלְכָּהּasכַּאֲשֶׁרhe had doneעָשָׂהto the kingלְמֶלֶךְof Jericho.יְרִיחוֹ

And YHWHוַ יְהוָהgaveיִּתֵּןLachishאֶת לָכִישׁinto the handבְּיַדof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלand he took itוַיִּלְכְּדָהּon the secondבַּ הַשֵּׁנִיdayיּוֹםand struck itוַיַּכֶּהָwith the edgeלְפִיof the sword,חֶרֶבand everyוְאֶת כָּלpersonהַנֶּפֶשׁwhoאֲשֶׁרwas in it,בָּהּaccording to allכְּכֹלthatאֲשֶׁרhe had doneעָשָׂהto Libnah.לְלִבְנָה
ThenאָזHoramהֹרָםkingמֶלֶךְof Gezerגֶּזֶרcame upעָלָהto helpלַעְזֹרLachish,אֶת לָכִישׁand Joshuaוַ יְהוֹשֻׁעַstruck himיַּכֵּהוּand his peopleוְאֶת עַמּוֹuntilעַדhe had leftהִשְׁאִירhimלוֹnoבִּלְתִּיsurvivor.שָׂרִיד
Then Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַpassed on,וַיַּעֲבֹרand allוְכָלIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלwith him,עִמּוֹfrom Lachishמִלָּכִישׁto Eglon,עֶגְלֹנָהand they campedוַיַּחֲנוּagainst itעָלֶיהָand foughtוַיִּלָּחֲמוּagainst it.עָלֶיהָ

He took itוַיִּלְכְּדָהּand its kingוְאֶת מַלְכָּהּand allוְאֶת כָּלits cities,עָרֶיהָand they struck themוַיַּכּוּםwith the edgeלְפִיof the swordחֶרֶבand devoted to destructionוַיַּחֲרִימוּeveryאֶת כָּלpersonנֶפֶשׁwhoאֲשֶׁרwas in it;בָּהּhe leftהִשְׁאִירnoלֹאsurvivor.שָׂרִידAsכַּאֲשֶׁרhe had doneעָשָׂהto Hebron,לְחֶבְרוֹןsoכֵּןhe didעָשָׂהto Debirלִדְבִרָהand to its king,וּלְמַלְכָּהּand asוְכַאֲשֶׁרhe had doneעָשָׂהto Libnahלְלִבְנָהand to its king.וּלְמַלְכָּהּ
So Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַstruckוַיַּכֶּהallאֶת כָּלthe land:הָאָרֶץthe hill country,הָהָרthe Negev,וְהַנֶּגֶבthe Shephelah,וְהַשְּׁפֵלָהand the slopes,וְהָאֲשֵׁדוֹתand allוְאֵת כָּלtheir kings;מַלְכֵיהֶםhe leftהִשְׁאִירnoלֹאsurvivor,שָׂרִידand he devoted to destructionהֶחֱרִיםallוְאֵת כָּלthat breathed,הַנְּשָׁמָהjust asכַּאֲשֶׁרYHWH,יְהוָהthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלhad commanded.צִוָּה
And Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַstruck themוַיַּכֵּםfrom Kadesh-barneaמִקָּדֵשׁ בַּרְנֵעַas far asוְעַדGaza,עַזָּהand allוְאֵת כָּלthe landאֶרֶץof Goshenגֹּשֶׁןas far asוְעַדGibeon.גִּבְעוֹן
And allוְאֵת כָּלtheseהָאֵלֶּהkingsהַמְּלָכִיםand their landוְאֶת אַרְצָםJoshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַtookלָכַדat oneאֶחָתtime,פַּעַםbecauseכִּיYHWH,יְהוָהthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלfoughtנִלְחָםfor Israel.לְיִשְׂרָאֵל
Then Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַreturned,וַיָּשָׁבand allוְכָלIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלwith him,עִמּוֹtoאֶלthe campהַמַּחֲנֶהat Gilgal.הַגִּלְגָּלָה
