Word study

Harvest, reaping: the time when grain is cut and what is gathered in. It comes from the verb קָצַר, ‘reap’ (H7114). BDB also gives it the sense of ‘branch’ or the boughs of a tree.

Historical and cultural background

In reaping, the edge of the field was not to be reaped nor the gleanings gathered; they were left for the poor and the resident alien (Leviticus 19:9; 23:22). “The feast of Harvest” celebrated the firstfruits (Exodus 23:16). Ruth arrives in Bethlehem “at the beginning of the barley harvest” (Ruth 1:22).

How we translate it

“Harvest” 49 times, both for the crop and for the time of reaping (“The harvest is past, the summer is ended”, Jeremiah 8:20). In Job and the Psalms, where the word is part of a tree, it is rendered “branches” (4), and once “boughs” (Isaiah 27:11).
