To be jubilant: to rejoice strongly, with a joy that moves and shows. It almost always goes together with שָׂמַח, ‘be glad’. From the same root is גִּיל, ‘jubilation’.

How we translate it

Three verbs of joy are told apart: שׂמח, ‘be glad’; גיל, here “be jubilant”, “exult” or “rejoice”; שׂושׂ, ‘rejoice’ or ‘exult’. In the Psalms the text says “be jubilant” (“will be jubilant” 7 times, “be jubilant” 4: “Be glad in YHWH and be jubilant”, Psalm 32:11); elsewhere “exult” (10) or “rejoice” (17), as in Isaiah, Habakkuk, 1 Chronicles 16:31 and Joel 2:21.
