1A clean heart
- Whoever has innocent hands and a pure heart may go up to God's mountain
Who will go up to the mountain of YHWH? And who will stand in his holy place? He who has innocent hands and is clean of heart, who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood, and has not sworn with deceit. He will receive a blessing from YHWH, and righteousness from the Elohim of his salvation.
Psalms 24:3–5 - The one praying asks God, “A clean heart create for me”
Hide your face from my sins, and all my iniquities blot out. A clean heart create for me, Elohim, and a firm spirit renew within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and your holy spirit do not take from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and let a generous spirit sustain me.
Psalms 51:9–12 - Jesus calls blessed the pure in heart, for they will see God
Happy are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

More than all that is guarded, guard your heart, for from it come the outgoings of life.
Proverbs 4:23 - How can a young man keep his way clean? By guarding it by God's word
How will a young man keep pure his path? By keeping it according to your word.
Psalms 119:9 - Keep God's word in your heart so as not to sin against him
In my heart I have treasured up your saying, so that I may not sin against you.
Psalms 119:11 - Jesus: what makes a person unclean comes out of the heart
Do you not see that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled into the latrine? But the things that come out of the mouth come forth from the heart, and those defile the person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies. These are what defile the person; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the person.”
Matthew 15:17–20 - With such promises, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement
Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of flesh and spirit, completing holiness in the fear of God.
2 Corinthians 7:1
2Your body is a sanctuary
- Your body is a sanctuary of the Spirit; you are not your own
Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the one who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought at a price. So glorify God in your body.
1 Corinthians 6:18–20 - Paul to the community: you are God's sanctuary, and the Spirit lives in you
Do you not know that you are God’s sanctuary and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s sanctuary, God will destroy him; for God’s sanctuary is holy, and that is what you are.
1 Corinthians 3:16–17 - Offer your body as a living sacrifice and renew your mind
I urge you then, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a sacrifice living, holy, pleasing to God, which is your rational worship. And do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, so that you may discern what the will of God is: what is good and pleasing and complete.
Romans 12:1–2 - The bodies of those who believe are members of the Messiah
Do you not know that your bodies are members of the Messiah? Shall I then take the members of the Messiah and make them members of a prostitute? By no means! Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For, it says, The two will become one flesh. But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with him.
1 Corinthians 6:15–17 - God's will: live apart from sexual immorality, with honor
For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in the passion of desire, as also the nations do who do not know God;
1 Thessalonians 4:3–5 - Peter: be holy in all your conduct, as the one who called you is holy
Therefore, girding up the loins of your mind, being sober, set your hope completely on the grace being brought to you at the revelation of Jesus the Messiah. As children of obedience, not conforming yourselves to the desires you had formerly in your ignorance, but as the one who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, You shall be holy, because I am holy.
1 Peter 1:13–16
3Fleeing sexual immorality
- Joseph refuses his master's wife: it would be a sin against God
After these things, his lord’s wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, “Lie with me.” But he refused and said to his lord’s wife, “Look, with me here my lord does not concern himself with what is in the house, and all that he has he has put in my hand. He is not greater in this house than I, and he has not withheld from me anything except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great evil and sin against Elohim?” Though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her, to lie beside her, to be with her.
Genesis 39:7–10 - A father warns his son against the foreign woman: what is sweet now ends bitter
My son, to my wisdom be attentive; to my insight incline your ear, to keep discretion, and that your lips may guard knowledge. For the lips of the strange woman drip honey from the comb, and smoother than oil is her palate; but her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a sword with two edges. Her feet go down to death; to Sheol her steps hold fast. The path of life she does not level; her tracks wander, and she does not know it. And now, sons, listen to me, and do not turn away from the sayings of my mouth. Keep your way far from her, and do not come near to the door of her house;
Proverbs 5:1–8 - Can a man carry fire in his lap without his clothes burning?
Do not desire her beauty in your heart, and do not let her take you with her eyelids. For on account of a prostitute one comes to a loaf of bread, but another man’s wife hunts the precious soul. Can a man carry fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Or can a man walk on hot coals, and his feet not be scorched?
Proverbs 6:25–28 - Drawn by her lips, he follows her like an ox to the slaughter, not knowing it costs his life
She turns him aside with the greatness of her teaching; with the smoothness of her lips she drags him along. He goes after her suddenly, as an ox to the slaughter goes, and as one in fetters to the correction goes the fool, until an arrow pierces his liver; as a bird hurries to the snare, and does not know that his soul is at stake in it.
Proverbs 7:21–23 - Job made a covenant with his eyes
A covenant I made with my eyes; how then could I gaze at a virgin?
Job 31:1 - Jesus goes as far as the desiring look and says to cut off whatever makes you stumble
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that everyone who looks at a woman in order to desire her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. And if your right eye causes you to stumble, tear it out and throw it away from you; for it is better for you that one of your members perish and not your whole body be thrown into Gehenna. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away from you; for it is better for you that one of your members perish and not your whole body go off into Gehenna.
Matthew 5:27–30 - God is faithful: with the temptation he also provides the way out
No temptation has seized you except a human one; and God is faithful, who will not let you be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also provide the way out, so as to be able to endure it.
1 Corinthians 10:13 - Sexual immorality should not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints
But sexual immorality and all impurity or greed, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; and no obscenity and foolish talk or crude joking, which are not fitting, but rather thanksgiving. For this you know, recognizing that no sexually immoral or impure or greedy person, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of the Messiah and of God.
Ephesians 5:3–5 - Paul to Timothy: flee youthful desires and pursue righteousness
But flee youthful desires, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.
2 Timothy 2:22 - Let no one despise your youth; be an example in purity
Let no one look down on your youth, but be an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
1 Timothy 4:12
4Thinking on what is good
- Paul lists what to think about: whatever is true, just, pure, lovely
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is righteous, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if any praise, think about these things.
Philippians 4:8 - Seek the things above and put to death what is earthly
So if you were raised with the Messiah, seek the things above, where the Messiah is, seated at the right hand of God. Think about the things above, not the things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with the Messiah in God. When the Messiah, your life, is made manifest, then you also will be made manifest with him in glory. So put to death the members that are on the earth: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry;
Colossians 3:1–5 - The mind of the flesh is death; the mind of the Spirit is life and peace
For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mindset of the flesh is death, but the mindset of the Spirit is life and peace;
Romans 8:5–6 - The psalmist resolves not to set before his eyes anything worthless
I will give heed to the way of blamelessness; when will you come to me? I will walk in the integrity of my heart within my house. I will not set before my eyes a thing of worthlessness; the doing of those who turn aside I hate; it will not cling to me.
Psalms 101:2–3 - Turn my eyes from looking at falsehood; give me life in your way
Turn away my eyes from looking at falsehood; in your way give me life.
Psalms 119:37 - Take every thought captive to obey the Messiah
and every high thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and taking captive every thought to the obedience of the Messiah,
2 Corinthians 10:5 - Walk decently and put on the Lord Jesus the Messiah
As in the day, let us walk decently, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in sexual excess and debauchery, not in strife and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus the Messiah, and do not make provision for the flesh for its desires.
Romans 13:13–14
