“And you,וְאַתָּהsonבֶןof man,אָדָםprophesyהִנָּבֵאto the mountainsאֶל הָרֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלand say,וְאָמַרְתָּ‘Mountainsהָרֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלhearשִׁמְעוּthe wordדְּבַרof YHWH.יְהוָה
ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH:יְהוִהBecauseיַעַןthe enemyהָאוֹיֵבsaidאָמַרagainst you,עֲלֵיכֶם“Aha!הֶאָחAnd the eternalוּ עוֹלָםhigh placesבָמוֹתhave becomeהָיְתָהa possessionלְמוֹרָשָׁהfor us,”לָּנוּ
thereforeלָכֵןprophesyהִנָּבֵאand say,וְאָמַרְתָּThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH:יְהוִהPrecisely becauseיַעַן בְּיַעַןof making you desolateשַׁמּוֹתand houndingוְשָׁאֹףyouאֶתְכֶםfrom all around,מִסָּבִיבso that you becameלִהְיוֹתְכֶםa possessionמוֹרָשָׁהfor the restלִשְׁאֵרִיתof the nations,הַגּוֹיִםand you have come upוַתֵּעֲלוּon the lipעַל שְׂפַתof the tongueלָשׁוֹןand into the slanderוְדִבַּתof the people,עָם
therefore,לָכֵןmountainsהָרֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלhearשִׁמְעוּthe wordדְּבַרof AdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH:יְהוִהThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWHיְהוִהto the mountainsלֶהָרִיםand to the hills,וְלַגְּבָעוֹתto the watercoursesלָאֲפִיקִיםand to the valleys,וְלַגֵּאָיוֹתand to the desolateוְלֶ הַשֹּׁמְמוֹתruinsחֳרָבוֹתand to the abandonedוְלֶ הַנֶּעֱזָבוֹתcitiesעָרִיםthatאֲשֶׁרhave becomeהָיוּbootyלְבַזand mockeryוּלְלַעַגto the restלִשְׁאֵרִיתof the nationsהַגּוֹיִםthatאֲשֶׁרare all around,מִסָּבִיב
thereforeלָכֵןthusכֹּהsaysאָמַרAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH:יְהוִהSurelyאִם לֹאin the fireבְּאֵשׁof my jealousyקִנְאָתִיI have spokenדִבַּרְתִּיagainst the restעַל שְׁאֵרִיתof the nationsהַגּוֹיִםand against allוְעַל כֻּלָּאEdom,אֱדוֹםwhoאֲשֶׁרgaveנָתְנוּmy landאַרְצִיto themselvesלָהֶםas a possessionלְמוֹרָשָׁהwith the joyבְּשִׂמְחַתof a wholeכָּלheart,לֵבָבwith contemptבִּשְׁאָטof soul,נֶפֶשׁso thatלְמַעַןits pasturelandמִגְרָשָׁהּmight be booty.לָבַז
Thereforeלָכֵןprophesyהִנָּבֵאconcerning the groundעַל אַדְמַתof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלand sayוְאָמַרְתָּto the mountainsלֶהָרִיםand to the hills,וְלַגְּבָעוֹתto the watercoursesלָאֲפִיקִיםand to the valleys,וְלַגֵּאָיוֹתThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH:יְהוִהLook, I,הִנְנִיin my jealousyבְקִנְאָתִיand in my fury,וּבַחֲמָתִיhave spoken,דִּבַּרְתִּיbecauseיַעַןthe disgraceכְּלִמַּתof the nationsגּוֹיִםyou have borne.נְשָׂאתֶם
ThereforeלָכֵןthusכֹּהsaysאָמַרAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH:יְהוִהIאֲנִיhave raisedנָשָׂאתִיmy hand;יָדִיsurelyאִם לֹאthe nationsהַגּוֹיִםthatאֲשֶׁרare around you,לָכֶם מִסָּבִיבtheyהֵמָּהwill bearיִשָּׂאוּtheir disgrace.כְּלִמָּתָם
But you,וְאַתֶּםmountainsהָרֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלwill giveתִּתֵּנוּyour branchesעַנְפְּכֶםand bearוּ תִּשְׂאוּyour fruitפֶרְיְכֶםfor my peopleלְעַמִּיIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלforכִּיthey are nearקֵרְבוּto coming.לָבוֹא
For,כִּיlook, I amהִנְנִיfor you,אֲלֵיכֶםand I will turnוּפָנִיתִיto you,אֲלֵיכֶםand you will be tilledוְנֶעֱבַדְתֶּםand sown.וְנִזְרַעְתֶּם
And I will multiplyוְהִרְבֵּיתִיon youעֲלֵיכֶםhuman beings,אָדָםallכָּלthe houseבֵּיתof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלall of it;כֻּלֹּהand the citiesוְ הֶעָרִיםwill be inhabited,נֹשְׁבוּand the ruinsוְהֶחֳרָבוֹתwill be built.תִּבָּנֶינָה
And I will multiplyוְהִרְבֵּיתִיon youעֲלֵיכֶםhuman beingאָדָםand livestock,וּבְהֵמָהand they will multiplyוְרָבוּand be fruitful;וּפָרוּand I will settleוְהוֹשַׁבְתִּיyouאֶתְכֶםas in your former times,כְּקַדְמוֹתֵיכֶםand I will do more goodוְהֵטִבֹתִיthan at your beginnings;מֵרִאשֹׁתֵיכֶםand you will knowוִידַעְתֶּםthatכִּיI amאֲנִיYHWH.יְהוָה
And I will makeוְהוֹלַכְתִּיhuman beings,אָדָםmy peopleעַמִּיIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלwalkהוֹלַכְתִּיon you,עֲלֵיכֶםand they will possess you,וִירֵשׁוּךָand you will beוְהָיִיתָtheirלָהֶםinheritance,לְנַחֲלָהand you will notוְלֹאagainתוֹסִף עוֹדleave them childless.לְשַׁכְּלָם
ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH:יְהוִהBecauseיַעַןthey sayאֹמְרִיםto you,לָכֶם“A devourerאֹכֶלֶתof human beingsאָדָםyou are,אָתְּand one who leaves childlessוּמְשַׁכֶּלֶתyour nationגּוֹיַיִךְyou have been,”הָיִית
thereforeלָכֵןhuman beingsאָדָםyou will notלֹאdevourתֹאכְלִיany longer,עוֹדand your nationוְגוֹיַיִךְyou will notלֹאleave childlessתְשַׁכְּלִיany longer,עוֹדdeclaresנְאֻםAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH.יְהוִה
And I will notוְלֹאlet you hearאַשְׁמִיעַ אֵלַיִךְany longerעוֹדthe disgraceכְּלִמַּתof the nations,הַגּוֹיִםand the reproachוְחֶרְפַּתof the peoplesעַמִּיםyou will notלֹאbearתִשְׂאִיany longer,עוֹדand your nationוְגוֹיַיִךְyou will notלֹאcause to stumbleתַכְשִׁלִיany longer,עוֹדdeclaresנְאֻםAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH.’”יְהוִה
And the wordוַ דְבַרof YHWHיְהוָהcameיְהִיto me,אֵלַיsaying,לֵאמֹר
“Sonבֶּןof man,אָדָםthe houseבֵּיתof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלwas livingיֹשְׁבִיםon their ground,עַל אַדְמָתָםand they defiledוַיְטַמְּאוּitאוֹתָהּby their wayבְּדַרְכָּםand by their deeds;וּבַעֲלִילוֹתָםlike the uncleannessכְּטֻמְאַתof menstruationהַנִּדָּהwasהָיְתָהtheir wayדַרְכָּםbefore me.לְפָנָי
And I poured outוָאֶשְׁפֹּךְmy furyחֲמָתִיon themעֲלֵיהֶםfor the bloodעַל הַדָּםthatאֲשֶׁרthey shedשָׁפְכוּon the land,עַל הָאָרֶץand with their idolsוּבְגִלּוּלֵיהֶםthey defiled it.טִמְּאוּהָ
And I scatteredוָאָפִיץthemאֹתָםamong the nations,בַּגּוֹיִםand they were dispersedוַיִּזָּרוּthrough the lands;בָּאֲרָצוֹתaccording to their wayכְּדַרְכָּםand according to their deedsוְכַעֲלִילוֹתָםI judged them.שְׁפַטְתִּים
And they cameוַיָּבוֹאto the nationsאֶל הַגּוֹיִםwhereאֲשֶׁר שָׁםthey went,בָּאוּand they profanedוַיְחַלְּלוּmy holyקָדְשִׁיname,שֵׁםwhen it was saidבֶּאֱמֹרof them,לָהֶם‘These areאֵלֶּהthe peopleעַםof YHWH,יְהוָהand from his landוּמֵאַרְצוֹthey have gone out.’יָצָאוּ
And I had pityוָאֶחְמֹלon my holyעַל קָדְשִׁיname,שֵׁםwhichאֲשֶׁרthe houseבֵּיתof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלprofanedחִלְּלוּהוּamong the nationsבַּגּוֹיִםwhereאֲשֶׁר שָׁמָּהthey went.בָּאוּ
Thereforeלָכֵןsayאֱמֹרto the houseלְבֵיתof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵל‘ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH:יְהוִהNotלֹאfor your sakeלְמַעַנְכֶםam Iאֲנִיdoing it,עֹשֶׂהhouseבֵּיתof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלbutכִּי אִםfor my holyלְ קָדְשִׁיname,שֵׁםwhichאֲשֶׁרyou have profanedחִלַּלְתֶּםamong the nationsבַּגּוֹיִםwhereאֲשֶׁר שָׁםyou went.בָּאתֶם
And I will sanctifyוְקִדַּשְׁתִּיmy greatי הַגָּדוֹלname,שְׁמִwhich has been profanedהַמְחֻלָּלamong the nations,בַּגּוֹיִםwhichאֲשֶׁרyou have profanedחִלַּלְתֶּםin their midst;בְּתוֹכָםand the nationsוְ הַגּוֹיִםwill knowיָדְעוּthatכִּיI amאֲנִיYHWH,יְהוָהdeclaresנְאֻםAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH,יְהוִהwhen I am sanctifiedבְּהִקָּדְשִׁיin youבָכֶםbefore their eyes.לְעֵינֵיהֶם
And I will takeוְלָקַחְתִּיyouאֶתְכֶםfrom the nations,מִן הַגּוֹיִםand gatherוְקִבַּצְתִּיyouאֶתְכֶםfrom allמִכָּלthe lands,הָאֲרָצוֹתand bringוְהֵבֵאתִיyouאֶתְכֶםinto your ground.אֶל אַדְמַתְכֶם
And I will sprinkleוְזָרַקְתִּיon youעֲלֵיכֶםcleanטְהוֹרִיםwater,מַיִםand you will be clean;וּטְהַרְתֶּםfrom allמִכֹּלyour uncleannessesטֻמְאוֹתֵיכֶםand from allוּמִכָּלyour idolsגִּלּוּלֵיכֶםI will cleanseאֲטַהֵרyou.אֶתְכֶם
And I will giveוְנָתַתִּיyouלָכֶםa newחָדָשׁheart,לֵבand a newוְ חֲדָשָׁהspiritרוּחַI will putאֶתֵּןwithin you;בְּקִרְבְּכֶםand I will removeוַהֲסִרֹתִיthe heartלֵבof stoneהָאֶבֶןfrom your flesh,מִבְּשַׂרְכֶםand giveוְנָתַתִּיyouלָכֶםa heartלֵבof flesh.בָּשָׂר
And my spiritוְ רוּחִיI will putאֶתֵּןwithin you,בְּקִרְבְּכֶםand I will bring it aboutוְעָשִׂיתִיthatאֲשֶׁרyou walkתֵּלֵכוּin my statutes,בְּחֻקַּיand keepוּ תִּשְׁמְרוּmy ordinancesמִשְׁפָּטַיand do them.וַעֲשִׂיתֶם
And you will liveוִישַׁבְתֶּםin the landבָּאָרֶץthatאֲשֶׁרI gaveנָתַתִּיto your fathers,לַאֲבֹתֵיכֶםand you will beוִהְיִיתֶםmyלִיpeople,לְעָםand Iוְאָנֹכִיwill beאֶהְיֶהyourלָכֶםElohim.לֵאלֹהִים
And I will saveוְהוֹשַׁעְתִּיyouאֶתְכֶםfrom allמִכֹּלyour uncleannesses;טֻמְאוֹתֵיכֶםand I will callוְקָרָאתִיfor the grainאֶל הַדָּגָןand multiply it,וְהִרְבֵּיתִי אֹתוֹand I will notוְלֹאlayאֶתֵּןfamineרָעָבon you.עֲלֵיכֶם
And I will multiplyוְהִרְבֵּיתִיthe fruitפְּרִיof the treeהָעֵץand the produceוּתְנוּבַתof the field,הַשָּׂדֶהso thatלְמַעַן אֲשֶׁרyou will notלֹאagainעוֹדreceiveתִקְחוּthe reproachחֶרְפַּתof famineרָעָבamong the nations.בַּגּוֹיִם
And you will rememberוּזְכַרְתֶּםyour evilהָרָעִיםwaysדַּרְכֵיכֶםand your worksוּמַעַלְלֵיכֶםthatאֲשֶׁרwere notלֹאgood,טוֹבִיםand you will loathe yourselvesוּנְקֹטֹתֶם בִּפְנֵיכֶםfor your iniquitiesעַל עֲוֺנֹתֵיכֶםand for your abominations.וְעַל תּוֹעֲבוֹתֵיכֶם
Notלֹאfor your sakeלְמַעַנְכֶםam Iאֲנִיdoing it,עֹשֶׂהdeclaresנְאֻםAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH;יְהוִהlet it be knownיִוָּדַעto you.לָכֶםBe ashamedבּוֹשׁוּand blushוְהִכָּלְמוּfor your ways,מִדַּרְכֵיכֶםhouseבֵּיתof Israel.יִשְׂרָאֵל
ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH:יְהוִהOn the dayבְּיוֹםI cleanseטַהֲרִיyouאֶתְכֶםfrom allמִכֹּלyour iniquities,עֲוֺנוֹתֵיכֶםI will causeוְהוֹשַׁבְתִּיthe citiesהֶעָרִיםto be inhabited,הוֹשַׁבְתִּיand the ruinsוְ הֶחֳרָבוֹתwill be built.נִבְנוּ
And the desolateוְ הַנְּשַׁמָּהlandהָאָרֶץwill be tilledתֵּעָבֵדinstead ofתַּחַת אֲשֶׁרbeingהָיְתָהa desolationשְׁמָמָהin the eyesלְעֵינֵיof everyoneכָּלwho passes by.עוֹבֵר
And they will say,וְאָמְרוּ“Thisהַלֵּזוּland,הָאָרֶץthe desolate one,הַנְּשַׁמָּהhas becomeהָיְתָהlike the gardenכְּגַןof Eden;עֵדֶןand the ruinedוְ הֶחֳרֵבוֹתcities,הֶעָרִיםand the desolateוְהַנְשַׁמּוֹתand the torn down,וְהַנֶּהֱרָסוֹתare fortifiedבְּצוּרוֹתand inhabited.”יָשָׁבוּ
And the nationsוְ הַגּוֹיִםthatאֲשֶׁרare leftיִשָּׁאֲרוּaround youסְבִיבוֹתֵיכֶםwill knowיָדְעוּthatכִּיI,אֲנִיYHWH,יְהוָהhave builtבָּנִיתִיwhat was torn down,הַנֶּהֱרָסוֹתand plantedנָטַעְתִּיwhat was desolate;הַנְּשַׁמָּהI,אֲנִיYHWH,יְהוָהhave spoken,דִּבַּרְתִּיand I will do it.וְעָשִׂיתִי
ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH:יְהוִהThisזֹאתtooעוֹדI will let myself be inquired ofאִדָּרֵשׁby the houseלְבֵיתof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלto doלַעֲשׂוֹתfor them:לָהֶםI will multiplyאַרְבֶּהthemאֹתָםlike a flockכַּצֹּאןof human beings.אָדָם
Like the flockכְּצֹאןof holy things,קָדָשִׁיםlike the flockכְּצֹאןof Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַםat her appointed feasts,בְּמוֹעֲדֶיהָsoכֵּןthe ruinedהֶ הֶחֳרֵבוֹתcitiesעָרִיםwill beתִּהְיֶינָהfullמְלֵאוֹתof a flockצֹאןof human beings;אָדָםand they will knowוְיָדְעוּthatכִּיI amאֲנִיYHWH.’”יְהוָה
