1In the Beginning
- The book opens with God creating: he says "Let there be light," and there is light
In the beginning Elohim created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the spirit of Elohim was hovering over the surface of the waters. And Elohim said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And Elohim saw the light, that it was good; and Elohim separated the light from the darkness. And Elohim called the light “Day,” and the darkness he called “Night.” And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
Genesis 1:1–5 - God forms the man from the dust of the ground and breathes into him the breath of life
These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that YHWH Elohim made earth and heavens. Now no shrub of the field was yet on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for YHWH Elohim had not sent rain on the earth, and there was no human being to work the ground; but a mist would go up from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground. And YHWH Elohim formed the man from dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being.
Genesis 2:4–7 - The heavens were made by his word: he spoke, and it was
By the word of YHWH the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their army. He gathers like a heap the waters of the sea; he puts in storehouses the deeps. Let all the earth fear YHWH; of him let all the inhabitants of the world be afraid. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.
Psalms 33:6–9 - John goes back to "the beginning": all things came into being through the Word
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being
John 1:1–3 - Paul says all things were created through Jesus and for him
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation, because in him all things were created, in the heavens and on the earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and all things hold together in him.
Colossians 1:15–17 - By faith we understand that the ages were set in order by the word of God
By faith we understand that the ages were set in order by the word of God, so that what is seen did not come into being from things that appear.
Hebrews 11:3
2Creation Speaks of Him
- David: the heavens declare God's glory without using words
For the director. A psalm of David. The heavens recount the glory of El, and the vault proclaims the work of his hands. Day to day pours out the saying, and night to night declares knowledge. There is no saying, and there are no words; their voice is not heard. Through all the earth their line has gone out, and to the end of the world their words. For the sun he has set a tent in them,
Psalms 19:1–4 - Paul says God's power can be clearly seen in what has been made
because what can be known about God is plain among them, for God made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world his invisible things are clearly seen, being understood through the things made, both his eternal power and divinity, so that they are without excuse.
Romans 1:19–20 - God, from the storm, asks Job where he was when he founded the earth
Where were you when I founded the earth? Declare it, if you know understanding. Who set its measurements, if you know? Or who stretched over it a line? On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone, when the stars of the morning shouted for joy together, and all the sons of Elohim shouted in acclamation? And who shut in the sea with doors when it burst forth, coming out from the womb, when I made the cloud its garment and thick cloud its swaddling band, and I imposed on it my limit, and set a bar and doors, and said, ‘As far as here you may come, and no farther; and here a limit shall be set to the haughtiness of your waves’?
Job 38:4–11 - A psalm walks through the sea, the animals, and the food of every creature
How many are your works, YHWH! All of them in wisdom you have made; the earth is full of your possessions. This is the sea, great and wide; there are moving things without number, animals small with great. There the ships go, and Leviathan, which you formed to play in it. All of them wait for you to give them their food in its season. You give to them, they gather it up; you open your hand, they are satisfied with good. You hide your face, they are dismayed; you take away their breath, they expire, and to their dust they return. You send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.
Psalms 104:24–30 - Isaiah asks who measured the waters in the hollow of his hand
Who has measured in the hollow of his hand the waters, and the heavens with the span gauged, and held in a measure the dust of the earth, and weighed with the scale the mountains and the hills with a balance?
Isaiah 40:12 - The whole cosmos, from angels to sun and moon, is invited to praise
Praise Yah. Praise YHWH from the heavens; praise him in the heights. Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his armies. Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all stars of light. Praise him, heavens of the heavens, and the waters that are above the heavens. Let them praise the name of YHWH, for he commanded, and they were created. And he established them forever and ever; he gave a statute, and it will not pass away.
Psalms 148:1–6 - Job says even the beasts and birds teach who made all this
But ask, please, the beasts, and they will teach you; and the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you; and the fish of the sea will recount it to you. Who does not know among all these that the hand of YHWH has done this? In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the spirit of all the flesh of man.
Job 12:7–10 - Heavens, sea, field and forest rejoice before YHWH, who is coming
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea thunder, and what fills it; let the field exult, and all that is in it; then all the trees of the forest will shout for joy before YHWH, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth; he will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with his faithfulness.
Psalms 96:11–13
3The Human Being, in His Image
- God makes human beings in his image, male and female, and blesses them
And Elohim said, “Let us make the human being in our image, according to our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” And Elohim created the human being in his image; in the image of Elohim he created him; male and female he created them. And Elohim blessed them, and Elohim said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every animal that creeps on the earth.”
Genesis 1:26–28 - David looks at the stars and marvels that God cares for mortals
When I see your heavens, the works of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established, what is the mortal that you remember him, and the son of man that you attend to him? You made him a little lower than Elohim, and with glory and majesty you crowned him. You make him rule over the works of your hands; all things you put under his feet:
Psalms 8:3–6 - David finds himself woven by God in his mother's womb
For you created my kidneys; you wove me in the womb of my mother. I will give you thanks, for fearfully I have been wonderfully made; wonderful are your works, and my soul knows it very well. My bones were not hidden from you when I was made in secret, embroidered in the depths of the earth. My embryo your eyes saw; and in your book all of them were written, the days that were formed, when there was not one of them.
Psalms 139:13–16 - Adam's genealogy recalls that he was made in the likeness of Elohim
This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that Elohim created the human being, in the likeness of Elohim he made him. Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and called their name “Human Being” in the day they were created.
Genesis 5:1–2 - James: with the tongue we curse people, who were made in the likeness of God
With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who have been made in the likeness of God.
James 3:9
4Caring for Creation
- God puts the man in the garden to work it and keep it
And YHWH Elohim took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and to keep it.
Genesis 2:15 - David: the earth and everything in it belongs to YHWH
Of David. A psalm. The earth belongs to YHWH, and all that fills it, the world and those who dwell in it. For he founded it upon the seas, and upon the rivers he established it.
Psalms 24:1–2 - The earth God gave to human beings
The heavens are the heavens of YHWH, but the earth he has given to human beings.
Psalms 115:16 - After the flood, God blesses Noah and gives him the animals for food
And Elohim blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. And the fear and the dread of you will be on every animal of the earth and on every bird of the sky, on everything that creeps on the ground, and on all the fish of the sea; into your hand they are given. Every creeping thing that is alive will be food for you; as the green plants, I give you everything.
Genesis 9:1–3 - The righteous person knows the soul of his animal
The righteous knows the soul of his livestock, but the mercies of the wicked are cruel.
Proverbs 12:10 - The law asks to let the mother bird go when taking the young
If you happen to come upon a bird’s nest before you on the road, in any tree or on the ground, with young or eggs, and the mother sitting on the young or on the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young. You shall surely send away the mother, and the young you may take for yourself, so that it may go well with you and you may prolong your days.
Deuteronomy 22:6–7 - Every seventh year the land itself rests, a sabbath for YHWH
“Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them: When you come into the land that I am giving you, the land shall cease, a Sabbath to YHWH. Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather its produce; but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a Sabbath to YHWH; your field you shall not sow, and your vineyard you shall not prune. What grows by itself from your harvest you shall not reap, and the grapes of your unpruned vine you shall not gather; it shall be a year of solemn rest for the land.
Leviticus 25:2–5 - God ends Jonah by recalling his pity for Nineveh and its animals
And I, should I not have pity on Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand human beings who do not know how to tell between their right hand and their left, and much livestock?”
Jonah 4:11 - Jesus points to birds and lilies to speak of the Father's care
Look at the birds of the sky: they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather into barns, and your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? And which of you, by worrying, can add a single cubit to his span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they do not labor nor spin; yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into an oven, will he not much more clothe you, you of little faith?
Matthew 6:26–30
5New Heavens and a New Earth
- God announces he is creating new heavens and a new earth, and a people of joy
For look, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former things will not be remembered, nor rise in the heart. But rather rejoice and exult forever in what I create; for look, I create Jerusalem as exultation, and her people as rejoicing. And I will exult in Jerusalem and rejoice in my people; and no longer will be heard in her the sound of weeping or the sound of crying.
Isaiah 65:17–19 - The new heavens and new earth endure before YHWH, and so will his people's name
For as the new heavens and the new earth that I make stand before me, declares YHWH, so your offspring and your name will stand.
Isaiah 66:22 - Paul: all creation groans and waits to be set free
For the eager expectation of the creation waits for the revelation of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from the slavery of corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans together and suffers birth pains together until now;
Romans 8:19–22 - Peter speaks of the day of the Lord and of new heavens where righteousness lives
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the elements, burning, will be dissolved, and the earth and the works in it will be laid bare. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens, set on fire, will be dissolved, and the elements, burning, will melt? But according to his promise we wait for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.
2 Peter 3:10–13 - John sees a new heaven and a new earth, and God living with people
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea is no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look, the tent of God is with humanity, and he will pitch his tent with them, and they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them. And he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, nor grief nor crying nor pain will there be any longer; for the first things have passed away.” And the one who sits on the throne said, “Look, I am making all things new.” And he says, “Write, because these words are faithful and true.”
Revelation 21:1–5
