1God is love
- John says God is love, and his love showed when he sent his Son
Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love has not known God, because God is love. By this the love of God was revealed among us: that God has sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as the expiation for our sins. Beloved, if God loved us in this way, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love has been brought to completion in us.
1 John 4:7–12 - God gave his only Son so that everyone who believes has life
For God loved the world in this way: that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16 - God shows his love while we were still sinners
But God shows his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, the Messiah died for us.
Romans 5:8 - God chose Israel, the smallest of peoples, only out of love
It was not because you were more numerous than all the peoples that YHWH set his affection on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all the peoples; but because of YHWH’s love for you, and because he kept the oath that he swore to your fathers, YHWH brought you out with a strong hand and ransomed you from the house of slaves, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know that YHWH your Elohim, he is Elohim, the faithful El, who keeps the covenant and the loyal love for those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,
Deuteronomy 7:7–9 - God as a father teaching his child to walk, drawing him with cords of love
When Israel was a boy, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. They called to them; so they went from before them; to the Baals they sacrificed, and to the carved images they burned incense. And I taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by their arms; but they did not know that I healed them. With cords of humankind I drew them, with ropes of love; and I was to them like those who lift the yoke from their jaws; and I bent down to him and fed him.
Hosea 11:1–4 - A song that repeats that his steadfast love is forever
Give thanks to YHWH, for he is good, for his loyal love is forever. Give thanks to the Elohim of the gods, for his loyal love is forever. Give thanks to the Lord of the lords, for his loyal love is forever.
Psalms 136:1–3 - Nothing in all creation can separate us from God's love
For I am convinced that neither death nor life nor angels nor rulers nor things present nor things to come nor powers, nor height nor depth nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in the Messiah Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38–39
2What love is like
- Paul describes love: patient, kind, without envy or pride
Love is patient, is kind; love does not envy; love does not brag, is not puffed up; it does not behave improperly, does not seek its own interests, is not provoked, does not keep a record of evil; it does not rejoice at unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; it bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
1 Corinthians 13:4–7 - Without love, even the greatest gifts and sacrifices count for nothing
If I speak in the tongues of humans and of angels but do not have love, I have become a resounding bronze gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophecy and know all the mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. And if I give away as food all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I will be burned, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
1 Corinthians 13:1–3 - Above all, put on love, which binds everything together
So put on, as chosen ones of God, holy and beloved, compassionate affection, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, bearing with one another and forgiving each other if anyone has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord also forgave you, so also you must forgive. And above all these things put on love, which is the bond of completeness.
Colossians 3:12–14 - Hatred stirs up strife; love covers every offense
Hatred stirs up quarrels, but all transgressions love covers.
Proverbs 10:12 - Love is strong as death, and many waters cannot quench it
Set me as a seal on your heart, as a seal on your arm, for strong as death is love, hard as Sheol is jealousy; its flames are flames of fire, a flame of Yah. Many waters cannot quench love, nor can rivers flood it; if a man gave all the wealth of his house for love, with contempt they would despise him.
Song of Songs 8:6–7
3Loving God
- Listen, Israel: love God with all your heart, soul and strength
Hear, Israel: YHWH our Elohim, YHWH is one. You shall love YHWH your Elohim with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These words that I am commanding you today shall be on your heart.
Deuteronomy 6:4–6 - Jesus answers which commandment is the first of all
And one of the scribes came up, having heard them debating, and seeing that he had answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Mark 12:28–31 - David, rescued from his enemies, begins by saying, “I love you, YHWH”
For the director. Of the servant of YHWH, of David, who spoke to YHWH the words of this song on the day YHWH delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said: “I love you, YHWH, my strength. YHWH is my crag and my fortress and the one who brings me to safety; my El, my Rock, in whom I take refuge; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my high refuge. I call on YHWH, worthy of praise, and from my enemies I am saved.
Psalms 18:1–3 - In the wilderness David thirsts for God; his steadfast love is better than life
A psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah. Elohim, my El are you; I seek you earnestly; my soul thirsts for you, my flesh longs for you, in a land dry and weary, without water. So in the holy place I have gazed on you, to see your strength and your glory. For better is your loyal love than life; my lips will extol you.

1 John 5:2–3
4Loving your neighbor
- Already in the law: no vengeance or grudge, love your neighbor as yourself
You shall not take vengeance, and you shall not bear a grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am YHWH.
Leviticus 19:18 - The foreigner living with you is to be treated as one of your own
And when a resident alien resides with you in your land, you shall not mistreat him. As the native among you shall be to you the resident alien who resides with you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were resident aliens in the land of Egypt. I am YHWH your Elohim.
Leviticus 19:33–34 - Jesus tells of the Samaritan to answer who my neighbor is
And look, a certain expert in the law stood up to test him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And he said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?” And he answered and said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” And he said to him, “You answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” But he, wanting to declare himself righteous, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” And Jesus replied and said, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among bandits, who also stripped him and laid blows on him and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite also, coming to the place and seeing him, passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, traveling, came to him; and when he saw him, he was moved with compassion. And he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and putting him on his own animal, he brought him to an inn and took care of him. And on the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ Which of these three seems to you to have become a neighbor to the one who fell among the bandits?” And he said, “The one who showed mercy to him.” And Jesus said to him, “Go, and you do likewise.”
Luke 10:25–37 - Loving the other person sums up and fulfills the whole law
Owe no one anything except to love one another; for the one who loves the other has fulfilled the law. For: You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not covet; and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, namely: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Love works no evil to the neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
Romans 13:8–10 - To love is to give your life and help the needy, in deed and not just word
By this we have come to know love: that he laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But whoever has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God remain in him? Little children, let us not love in word or with the tongue, but in deed and truth.
1 John 3:16–18 - Freedom is used to serve one another in love
For you were called to freedom, brothers; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve as slaves to one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, in this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
Galatians 5:13–14 - Jesus gives a new commandment: love one another as I have loved you

5Loving your enemies
- Jesus asks us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may become sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? So you shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Matthew 5:43–48 - Already in the law: return your enemy's stray animal and help the fallen one
When you come upon your enemy's ox or his donkey going astray, you shall surely bring it back to him. When you see the donkey of one who hates you lying down under its load, you shall refrain from leaving it to him; you shall surely help with him.
Exodus 23:4–5 - If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat
If the one who hates you is hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; for you will heap coals on his head, and YHWH will repay you.
Proverbs 25:21–22 - Do good to those who hate you and be compassionate as your Father is
But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. To the one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from the one who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. Give to everyone who asks you, and from the one who takes away what is yours, do not demand it back. And just as you want people to do to you, do to them likewise. And if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners so that they may receive back the same amount. Rather, love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and evil. Be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.
Luke 6:27–36 - Do not repay evil for evil; overcome evil with good
Repay no one evil for evil; take thought for what is good before all people. If possible, as far as it depends on you, be at peace with all people. Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to the wrath; for it is written: Vengeance is mine; I will repay, says the Lord. But if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for by doing this you will heap coals of fire on his head. Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good.
Romans 12:17–21
