2The danger of riches

  • Jesus: where your treasure is, there your heart will be also

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and woodworm destroy, and where thieves dig through and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor woodworm destroys, and where thieves do not dig through or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

    Matthew 6:19–21
  • You cannot serve God and riches

“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold on to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

    Matthew 6:24
  • A rich young man leaves sad when Jesus asks him to let go of what he has

And look, one man came to him and said, “Teacher, what good thing must I do so that I may have eternal life?” And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is one who is good. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.” He says to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “ ‘You shall not murder; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother;’ and, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ” The young man says to him, “All these things I have kept; what do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give them to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” But when the young man heard the word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions. And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you that a rich man will enter into the kingdom of heaven with difficulty. And again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”

    Matthew 19:16–24
  • The parable of the rich man who fills his barns and doesn't count on life ending

And someone from the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” But he said to him, “Man, who appointed me judge or arbitrator over you?” And he said to them, “Watch out and guard yourselves from all greed, because even when someone has abundance, his life is not from his possessions.” And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a certain rich man produced abundantly. And he was reasoning within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have nowhere to gather my crops?’ And he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will gather all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; rest, eat, drink, be merry.”’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night they demand your soul from you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So it is with the one who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

    Luke 12:13–21
  • Paul: wanting to be rich leads into snares; the love of money is “a root of all evils”

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, because neither can we take anything out. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all evils, and some, reaching out for it, have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.

    1 Timothy 6:6–10
  • Whoever trusts in riches will fall; the righteous will flourish like leaves

    Ecclesiastes 5:10
  • Don't wear yourself out to get rich: wealth grows wings and flies off

Do not wear yourself out to get rich; from your own understanding desist. Will you make your eyes fly to it? It is gone! For it surely makes itself wings; like an eagle it flies to the heavens.

    Proverbs 23:4–5
  • Agur asks for neither poverty nor riches, only the bread of his portion

falsehood and a word of lies keep far from me; poverty and riches do not give me; feed me with the bread of my portion, lest I be satisfied and deny you and say, “Who is YHWH?” and lest I become poor and steal and profane the name of my Elohim.

    Proverbs 30:8–9

3Giving gladly

  • For the meeting tent, everyone whose heart was stirred gives

And they came, every man whose heart stirred him, and everyone whose spirit moved him, and they brought the contribution of YHWH for the work of the tent of meeting, and for all its service, and for the holy garments. And they came, the men with the women, all who were generous of heart; they brought brooches and earrings and rings and necklaces, all kinds of articles of gold; and every man who waved a wave offering of gold to YHWH. And every man with whom was found blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats’ hair, and rams’ skins dyed red, and fine skins, brought them. Everyone who set apart a contribution of silver and bronze brought the contribution of YHWH; and everyone with whom was found acacia wood for any work of the service brought it. And every woman wise of heart spun with her hands, and they brought what they had spun: the blue and the purple, the scarlet, and the fine linen. And all the women whose heart stirred them with wisdom spun the goats’ hair. And the chiefs brought the onyx stones and the stones for setting, for the ephod and for the breastpiece, and the spice and the oil for the light, and for the anointing oil, and for the fragrant incense. Every man and woman whose heart moved them to bring something for all the work that YHWH had commanded to be done through Moses, the sons of Israel brought a freewill offering to YHWH.

    Exodus 35:21–29
  • The law asks not to close your hand to a brother in need

If there is among you a needy one, one of your brothers, in one of your gates in your land that YHWH your Elohim is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or close your hand against your brother, the needy one. But you shall freely open your hand to him and freely lend him enough for his need, whatever he lacks. Guard yourself so that there is not a wicked word in your heart, saying, “The seventh year, the year of release, is near,” and your eye is evil toward your brother, the needy one, and you do not give him anything, and he cries out against you to YHWH, and it becomes sin in you. You shall freely give to him, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him, because on account of this thing YHWH your Elohim will bless you in all your work and in every undertaking of your hand. For the needy one will never cease from the midst of the land; therefore I am commanding you, saying, “You shall freely open your hand to your brother, to your poor, and to your needy in your land.”

    Deuteronomy 15:7–11
  • Whoever waters will also be watered

There is one who scatters and gains even more, and one who withholds more than is right comes only to need. A soul of blessing will be filled to the full, and one who waters will also himself be watered.

And one poor widow came and put in two lepta, which is a quadrans. And summoning his disciples, he said to them, “Truly I tell you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who are putting into the treasury. For they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole living.”

    Mark 12:41–44
  • Jesus: give in secret, without a trumpet

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness before people in order to be seen by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven. So when you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be glorified by people. Truly I tell you, they have received in full their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

    Matthew 6:1–4
  • The assemblies of Macedonia gave joyfully though deeply poor

Now we make known to you, brothers, the grace of God that has been given in the assemblies of Macedonia, that in a great test of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty have overflowed into the wealth of their generosity. For I testify that according to their ability and beyond their ability, of their own accord, with much urging they begged us for the favor and the sharing in the service for the saints, and not as we had hoped, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and to us by the will of God,

    2 Corinthians 8:1–5
  • Each gives as decided in the heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion

And remember this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows with blessings will also reap with blessings. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not out of grief or out of compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound for you, so that in everything, always having all sufficiency, you may abound in every good work.

    2 Corinthians 9:6–8
  • Paul recalls Jesus' words: it is more blessed to give than to receive

    Acts 20:35
  • To the rich: hope in God, do good and share

Command the rich in the present age not to be arrogant nor to set their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who provides us with all things richly for enjoyment; to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous, sharing, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that is real.

  • Through Malachi, YHWH asks them to bring the whole tithe into the storehouse

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house; and test me, please, in this, says YHWH Tsevaot, if I will not open for you the floodgates of the heavens and pour out on you blessing until there is no more need.

    Malachi 3:10
  • Jesus: the measure you give will be the measure you receive

Give, and it will be given to you: a good measure, pressed down, shaken, running over, they will put into your lap; for with the measure with which you measure, it will be measured back to you.”

    Luke 6:38
