3Hearing and doing

  • Ezra reads the law from morning until midday, and all the people listen closely

And all the people gathered as one man into the square that is in front of the Water Gate, and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which YHWH had commanded Israel. So Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, from man to woman, and all who could understand to listen, on the first day of the seventh month. And he read in it before the square that is in front of the Water Gate, from the light until the middle of the day, in front of the men and the women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were toward the book of the law. And Ezra the scribe stood on a tower of wood that they had made for this; and beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, at his right; and at his left Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, Meshullam. And Ezra opened the book before the eyes of all the people, for he was above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. And Ezra blessed YHWH, the great Elohim; and all the people answered, “Amen, amen,” lifting up their hands; and they bowed and prostrated themselves before YHWH with their faces to the ground. And Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites were making the people understand the law, and the people were in their place. And they read in the book, in the law of Elohim, clearly, and gave the sense, and they understood the reading.

    Nehemiah 8:1–8
  • Jesus explains the parable: the seed falls on four kinds of ground

Now this is the parable: the seed is the word of God. And those along the path are the ones who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. And those on the rock are the ones who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root; they believe for a while, and in a time of testing fall away. And what fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked by worries and riches and pleasures of life, and they do not bring fruit to maturity. But that in the good soil, these are the ones who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, hold it fast and bear fruit with perseverance.

    Luke 8:11–15
  • Jesus: blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it

But he said, “Rather, happy are those who hear the word of God and keep it.”

    Luke 11:28
  • Whoever hears and does Jesus' words builds on the rock

“So everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain came down, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain came down, and the floods came, and the winds blew and struck that house, and it fell, and its fall was great.”

    Matthew 7:24–27
  • Jesus ties loving him and keeping his word to living close to God

Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him.

    John 14:23
  • The Bereans received the word eagerly and examined the Scriptures daily

Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

    Acts 17:11
  • James: don't just listen; whoever looks and does not act forgets what they looked like

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking closely at the face he was born with in a mirror; for he looked at himself and has gone away and at once forgot what kind of man he was. But the one who looks intently into the perfect law, the law of freedom, and remains in it, becoming not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be happy in his doing.

    James 1:22–25
