1The Spirit in the Old Testament

2The Father's promise

  • God promises to pour out his spirit on all flesh: sons, daughters and slaves

And it will happen afterward that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. And even on the male slaves and on the female slaves in those days I will pour out my spirit.

    Joel 2:28–29
  • The risen Jesus tells them to wait in the city for what his Father promised

And look, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you; but you stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

    Luke 24:49
  • Before going up to heaven, Jesus promises power so they can be his witnesses

And while gathered together with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, “which you heard from me; for John immersed in water, but you will be immersed in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” So those who had come together were asking him, saying, “Lord, are you restoring the kingdom to Israel at this time?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has set by his own authority; but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

    Acts 1:4–8
  • Jesus announces another Advocate who will be with them forever

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see him nor know him. You know him, because he remains with you and will be in you.

    John 14:16–17
  • The Spirit will teach everything and remind them of what Jesus said

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and remind you of all that I said to you.

    John 14:26
  • Jesus explains why it is better that he go: the Spirit of truth will come

But I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and concerning righteousness and concerning judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you in all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will announce to you the things to come.

    John 16:7–13
  • At Pentecost the Spirit fills the disciples gathered in a house

And when the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all together in the same place. And suddenly there came from heaven a roar like that of a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, being distributed, and one rested on each of them. And all were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out.

    Acts 2:1–4
  • Peter says the promise is for them, their children and those far away

Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and they said to Peter and the other apostles, “What shall we do, brothers?” And Peter said to them, “Change your minds, and let each of you be immersed in the name of Jesus the Messiah for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all those far away, as many as the Lord our God may call.”

    Acts 2:37–39

3What he does in us

4The fruit of the Spirit

5Gifts for serving

  • Many kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit, given for the good of all

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, and the same Lord; and there are varieties of workings, but the same God who works all things in all. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the benefit of all. For to one through the Spirit is given a word of wisdom, and to another a word of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another workings of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discernment of spirits, to another kinds of tongues, to another interpretation of tongues. But all these things the one and the same Spirit works, distributing to each one individually just as he wills.

    1 Corinthians 12:4–11
  • One body with many members: each serves with the gift received

For just as in one body we have many members, and all the members do not have the same function, so we, the many, are one body in the Messiah, and individually members of one another. And having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, if it is prophecy, let it be according to the proportion of faith; if service, in serving; if the one who teaches, in teaching; if the one who encourages, in encouragement; the one who gives, with generosity; the one who leads, with diligence; the one who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

    Romans 12:4–8
  • Peter: use your gift to serve others, as good stewards of God's grace

Each one, as he has received a gift, serving one another with it as good stewards of the varied grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as speaking the words of God; if anyone serves, let him serve as from the strength that God supplies, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus the Messiah, to whom belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.

    1 Peter 4:10–11
  • God gave people with different roles to equip the saints

And he himself gave some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, some as shepherds and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, for the building up of the body of the Messiah, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of the Messiah,

    Ephesians 4:11–13
  • Paul asks us to follow love and seek what builds up, encourages and comforts

Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For the one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God; for no one understands him, but by the Spirit he speaks mysteries. But the one who prophesies speaks to people words of building up and encouragement and comfort.

    1 Corinthians 14:1–3
  • Paul tells Timothy to fan the gift into flame: God gives power, love and sound judgment

For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is in you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but of power and of love and of sound judgment.

    2 Timothy 1:6–7
