The earth. BDB defines it as the earth as a whole or, in part, a country or region.

Historical and cultural background

The land promised to Israel is described as “a good and broad land, to a land flowing with milk and honey” (Exodus 3:8).

How we translate it

“Land” 1658 times, “earth” 652, “lands” 76. This edition's glossary sets “earth, land” for אֶרֶץ: “earth” where the whole world is meant, beside the heavens, and “land” for a country or territory (Joseph, “governor over the land”, Genesis 42:6). It keeps “ground” for אֲדָמָה, but in the expression “bowed down to the ground” and a few like it this edition also writes “ground” for אֶרֶץ (112 times), because the point there is the floor where one stands.
